An Unlikely Hero!
NargLAh, a shoggoth, is sent to earth. Used to seeing so much with his 1000 eyes, his new “meat suit” is confining and limiting! NargLAh must also share the “meat suit” with Murph as a sidekick or guide depending on the moment, fortunately, Murph is a laid-back surfer dude sentenced to be tortured throughout eternity! It is up to this dynamic duo to solve and prevent the impending destruction of the earth, humanity, eternity, etc.
Roy M. Griffis, the author captures the imagination of his audience with rich and vivid details, utilizing words to paint the world and life of NargLAh. The listener cannot help but be mesmerized by terms such as poo-flingers, hairless apes, and more. Griffis’s sense of humor shines throughout this book! I thoroughly enjoyed the side notes to the editor that NargLAh made throughout the story even during the deadliest of times. I thought he did an excellent job of blending Murph and NargLAh together into one being as well. I could not help but laugh and chuckle at times. Written in the first-person narrative, the listener is given an inside look at NargLAh. The storyline was richly detailed, and the plot twists were well-done. Character development was smooth providing each character with a rich personality. The world-building was masterful and fun!
The narrator, Magnus Carlssen did an excellent job of performing and assuming each character. The story was easy to follow through the different voices he gave each character. He flowed between them easily and fluidly. He captured the very essence of each character and played them to the fullest extent possible. He paced himself well and spoke clearly and with a steady rhythm. An excellent narrator!
Overall, this is a book that is a must-listen especially if you need to relax, need a breath of fresh air, or coming off a horrible week – this book is guaranteed to make you at least smile, if not break down belly-laughing! I have to say, the HR references at first threw me as I kept waiting on the story to have something to do with Human Resources only to discover it meant something way different! What a hoot!
From beginning to end, Griffis kept the audience entertained with his sense of humor and wit. I have heard other books written by Griffis but I have to say, this is by far my favorite! A must-listen!
