When a Self-Appointed God Becomes Angry!
Jack Taylor is a young man in love who lives on Mars. Off on his first trip to the nearest outpost to buy his sweetheart a present, everything he knows and loves is destroyed or stolen. The culprits are unknown until Jack comes eye to eye with the New God of Mars, a self-proclaimed god with a heavy hand toward violence and death. Together with a retired Ranger, Jack pursues the new god and reclaims his present and future.
Gayne Young, the author designs a world that is similar to the outback of Australia or the wild west of America – bullies and self-appointed supreme beings rule the territory freely and unchallenged. Young’s characters are not complex, yet their sense of humanity is clear from their first words and actions. The horror of the violence is clear and detailed in vivid imagery, the powerlessness of the victims is felt, and the hatred one has for a living evilness is strong. The story moves forward at a quick pace and we are given deeper insight into some of the characters. The plot twists are well done, some are minor but the major ones are unexpected.
The narrator, Kevin Perkins delivers a stunning performance. He brings the book to life with each word. His energy is evident and he captures the distinctive qualities of each character and projects them through the unique voices he assigns to each. He kept up with the pulse of the book and kept it moving forward to match.
I found myself sitting on pins and needles throughout the book. The action never stopped coming. I highly recommend this book.
