Sherlock Holmes is an unparalleled genius. Warlock Holmes is an idiot.
A font of arcane power, certainly. But he’s brilliantly dim. Frankly, he couldn’t deduce his way out of a paper bag. The only thing he has really got going for him are the might of a thousand demons and his stalwart companion.
The game’s afoot once more as the long-suffering Dr. John Watson and a partially-decomposed Warlock Holmes (though he’s getting better) face off against Moriarty’s gang, the Pinkertons, flesh-eating horses, a parliament of imps, boredom, Surrey, a succubus, an overly-Canadian aristocrat, a tricycle-fight to the death and the dreaded Pumpcrow. Oh, and a hell-hound, one assumes.

The Hellhound of Baskerville is the second dramatization that features a magical, comical take on the Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson stories. It is set in the same time period as the original. But Sherlock is actually “Warlock Holmes” who is a warlock. Then you have Dr. John Watson, who is really the brilliant mind behind the deductions of Warlock Holmes. The first book ended on a cliffhanger with Holmes and Moriarty inhabiting the same body but Moriarty in control. This second production starts out with Holmes being mostly dead (Princess Bride!) and the loyal Watson doing what he can to care for his friend.
Although the title references Doyles The Hell Hound of Baskerville, there are a couple of stories before they get to that famous one. If they were parodies of the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle then I didn’t recognize them. They incorporated Mr. Hyde and the Pinkertons. The shorter stories were enjoyable and furthered the plot. In this second installment of G.S. Dennings Warlock Holmes series, the character of Holmes gradually becomes more fleshed out (pun intended). Watson’s character had a rather large part in the first production but in this second rendering, Warlock’s background is explained in detail. I started to see a likable personality in Holmes instead of the buffoon that was portrayed in Brimstone. I enjoyed seeing the friendship between Doctor Watson and Holmes deepen.
I feel like the writing matured with this second book and while A Study in Brimstone may have been a bit scattered, Hellhound had more focus. There is a full cast of voice actors in this magical remake and I will list the full cast at the end of this review. I am really enjoying GraphicAudio’s take on G.S. Denning’s books. Despite this being 8 hours, I listened to this in one sitting. If you’re a fan of the humor of Monty Python or The Princess Bride then there’s a good chance you’ll enjoy this.
Regarding production: At the beginning of Brimstone, the sound effects were almost too loud. This time it was spot on. The background sound effects were much more balanced and didn’t drown out the voice actors.
If you keep track of this sort of thing: There was only one curse word that I caught but there are adult situations and humor.
Cast: Scott McCormick as Dr. John Watson, Eric Messner as Warlock Holmes, Zeke Alton as Sir Henry Baskerville, Chris Genebach as Jack Stapleton, Nora Achrati as Beryl Stapleton, Michael John Casey as Alexander Holder, Patrick Bussink as Vladislav Lestrade, Bradley Smith as Tor Grogsson, Lolita Horne as Mrs. Hudson and Jillian Levine-Sisson as our Parliament of Demons. With Rose Elizabeth Supan, Mort Shelby, Jeff Allin, Bradley Smith, Kimberly Gilbert, Andy Brownstein, Steve Wannall, Yasmin Tuazon, David Jourdan, Gwen Grastorf, Jonathon Church, Nanette Savard, Terence Aselford, Ken Jackson, Nick DePinto, Bob Payne and Richard Rohan as Professor James Moriarty. Additional narration by Colleen Delany.
