Sherlock Holmes is an unparalleled genius. Warlock Holmes is an idiot.
A font of arcane power, certainly. But he’s brilliantly dim. Frankly, he couldn’t deduce his way out of a paper bag. The only thing he has really got going for him are the might of a thousand demons and his stalwart companion.
Thankfully, Dr. Watson is always there to aid him through the treacherous shoals of Victorian propriety… and save him from a gruesome death every now and again.

Warlock Holmes: A Study in Brimstone is a magical take on the Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson stories. It is set in the same time period as the original. But Sherlock is “Warlock Holmes” and is what his name says he is: a warlock. A very powerful one but he does not have the genius mind that Arthur Conan Doyle gave his creation. On the other hand, Dr. John Watson’s mind is very logical and deductive. As in the Sherlock Holmes stories, Dr. Watson is the narrator. Magic is not well known in the world they inhabit. And although Lestrade and his police coworker are definitely not human, no one seems to notice.
This retelling is very tongue and cheek but it worked for me. I wasn’t sure at first but the longer I listened the more I loved it. It needs to be said though that there are three productions at the time of this writing and they are NOT stand alone. They really need to be listened to in order. I started with the second and was quite lost. This first production has several stories and the author G.S. Denning gives his spin to “The Speckled Band” and “A Study in Scarlet” among others. I’ve read all of the Sherlock Holmes stories but there were some I didn’t recognize.
These productions are dramatizations with a full cast of characters. I’ve listed the cast at the end of my review.
I loved this production for a couple of reasons. It really reminds me of the days of radio plays. For the most part, I would say I’ve enjoyed every dramatization that I’ve heard but Graphic Audio definitely takes it to another level. The only negative I have is that the sound effects in this first book were almost too loud at times. The background sound effects almost drowned out the actors. After a while, it either gets better or I just stopped noticing. Either way, I thoroughly enjoyed myself and chuckled aloud quite a few times. However, if you are looking for a serious production or something in the same style as the original work by Doyle then this is probably not for you. The author is a fan of Monty Python and The Princess Bride so that should give you some idea of the humor.
There is some adult humor hinted at in this production so it may not be for children. I don’t remember any profanity. Holmes and Watson appear to be gentlemen and so conduct themselves as such.
