Since his mother grew too ill to care for him, Rett Ward has been at the Walling Home state-run boarding school. Like most kids placed in a boarding school, he learned to be nearly invisible and fight the fights he needed to just to survive until he could get back to his mother. Getting back to mom maybe just a bit more difficult as he keeps waking up in a small depot with Bren and a mysterious person. Each time he wakes up, memories come back to him until he remembers why he is there. But now he must hurry, or his world will end.
Parker Peevyhouse, the author, creates a world that we all fear but are drawn to – A Groundhog Day type experience with evil mad scientists, a deadly unseen stranger, and a mysterious buried device in the wasteland.
Peevyhouse slowly and deliberately builds the suspense with each repeat visit Ward completes adding more and more detail and memories as the story progresses. The dialog and character development is spot on increasing the suspense. This story goes beyond the “who is doing it” plot, it is more of a psychological mystery that allows the listener to look within their own mind and wonder how they too would respond.
Although not action-packed, it is riveting in the masterful way Peevyhouse tells the story and his narrator, Matt Godfrey performs it. Godfrey gives a crackerjack performance as his voice is smooth and allows for the story itself to transport the listener. He is a first-class narrator who does not interfere with the story by interjecting his interpretation of the story or characters.
