Ishmael Jones is someone who can’t afford to be noticed, someone who lives under the radar, who drives on the dark side of the road. He’s employed to search out secrets, investigate mysteries and shine a light in dark places. Sometimes he kills people.
Invited by his employer, the enigmatic Colonel, to join him and his family for Christmas, Ishmael arrives at the grand but isolated Belcourt Manor in the midst of a blizzard to find that the Colonel has mysteriously disappeared. As he questions his fellow guests, Ishmael concludes that at least one of them – not least Ishmael himself - is harboring a dangerous secret, and that beneath the veneer of festive cheer lurk passion, jealousy, resentment and betrayal.
As a storm sets in, sealing off the Manor from the rest of the world, Ishmael must unmask a ruthless murderer before they strike again.

Ishmael is invited to a Family Christmas party event by “The Colonel” an enigmatic man that he works for in the elusive “Organization. Ishmael does the things that are needed to be done but he does them on his own terms. Ishmael has been around a very long time. But that is Ishmael’s story to tell. The Colonel has been protecting Ishmael since he has been working for the organization. Ishmael is invited to the Colonel’s home for reasons that the Colonel said would be explained when he arrived. Just get to the Colonel’s family’s very rural and isolated estate. Ishmael is a good operative and does as he is asked.
Ishmael arrives in the middle of a snowstorm. He meets the Colonel’s father Walter Belcourt and stepmother Melanie Belcourt, Penny Belcourt, The Colonel’s biological mother Diana Belcourt, her unique younger friend Sylvia Herron and a cast of others. Ishmael also is greeted by a very odd Butler Jeeves. This is the point where it feels much like the Agatha Christie novel” And then there were none”. This is a very well written and enjoyable Simon R. Green story. He follows the standard plot line and makes it very enjoyable with his Ishmael Jones character. The author weaves the main character’s back-story through the lives of all the various characters in this drama as it unwinds to a truly enjoyable dramatic conclusion.
