Alex is one of us. An office rat during daytime, he spends sleepless nights playing his favorite MMO game: a familiar, predictable world which is about to collapse. A new virtual universe arrives to replace it, aggressively devouring all others: the Crystal Sphere. Alex gets involved in testing new technologies which promise to revolutionize gaming. Fitted out with a neuroimplant which provides a 100 percent authentic experience, he has to survive in the Crystal Sphere against all odds. What is he turning into? Will he become yet another expendable test subject - or the first player to transcend reality?

When we meet Alex, he is on his way home from a long day at the office. He can’t wait to get home and play his favorite RPG, Middle Earth, where he is supposed to meet his friend Krista. Tonight they will conquer a level that they have been working together on for six grueling months.
Alex gets home, logs on, and slays a monster while waiting for Krista. But, as he is waiting, a message appears saying that Krista has left their party. Not being able to contact her through the game, Alex contacts a hacker who gives him Krista’s address. He immediately goes to her apartment to see what is going on and to ask why she left their group.
Alex does get to see Krista but she doesn’t want to see him. She calls the police to have him arrested. Little does Alex know that the ride home will change his life forever.
On his way home, Alex is in an almost fatal accident. While in the hospital, his consciousness comes and goes for a couple of days. When he is finally forced awake, there is a stranger next to his bed. Turns out the stranger is an executive at a gaming company and he would like Alex to test an implant for their new game, The Crystal Sphere. The implant completely immerses the user into the game letting them feel, see, smell, and touch everything like they would in real life. In exchange, the company will pay for Alex’s medical bills. Alex agrees but on one condition. They need to find and offer a test implant to Krista as well. Alex accepts and that’s where the main adventure starts.
This was my first time listening to a book in the LitRPG genre. If you have no experience with RPG games, then some of this book will probably be pretty boring for you and maybe somewhat confusing. The author goes into detail when he talks about hit points and various stats of Alex’s online character. There is quite a bit of that but, if you do understand the RPG lingo, it’s very interesting. It’s like you’re actually playing the game and leveling up along with Alex.
Graham Halstead is the narrator of this audiobook and he did a marvelous job. You can easily tell the characters by the different voices Graham does. He really brought the world to life for me.
The Crystal Sphere by Andrei Livadny may not be for everyone but if you like LitRPG, I highly recommend this audiobook. I am definitely looking forward to seeing where this series goes.
