Quincy Harker is back, and the stakes are higher than ever. The fate of the world rests on the shoulders of a swearing, drinking, misanthropic half-vampire with a bad attitude and an itchy trigger finger. Harker and his team of misfits have just a few days to prevent the actual end of the world, as a group of fanatics have kidnapped a young man thought to possess the power to open the Seven Seals.

Now Harker works for the Department of Homeland Security Paranormal Division alongside his former nemesis, detective…. Not sure how this came about but very fitting indeed. Now Harker has a team of professional behind him and the backing of the government for jurisdiction. The only problem is now he has to take orders from someone. However, he does so in Harker style, by not really giving a crap until he has to.
Straight to Hell has absolutely everything that makes a highly entertaining story. Humor with hilarious situations and one liners. Action with great fight scenes between paranormal beings. Paranormal/urban fantasy creatures, vampires, demons, dragons and the like. Whodunit modern detective story-line creating intrigue. Playful banter between interesting characters creating a connection to the story.
Hartness has discovered that no matter how short a book or novella is, the characters matter dearly. If the characters are not interesting and dynamic. Most people will stop caring about their well-being and therefore stop listening or reading a story. Along with a semi unique story-line. That is captivating enough to keep readers/listeners guessing. Again I wish it was longer, but I think I say that about nearly every novella I have listened to in the past. While they are a fun way to get a taste, they are often not the quencher I need.
If you have read or listened to Raising Hell already this one is a no brainer. You will love it as much if not more that the first. If you haven’t and you can be ok with ridiculous humor mixed in with your urban fantasy this also is for you.
James Foster has been working at perfecting his gravely demon hunter voice since the last book because it is more so than before. I think if it were possible for him to take it even further with this voice while keeping his normal “narrator” voice and other character voices the same, would only make the listening that much more fun.
