In my experience I have noticed that a second book in a series seems to be difficult to capture the same essence and impact that the first book delivers, I really hope that this doesn’t happen with this one. If you are familiar with my past reviews, you might know that my review of High Moor is my most viewed review to date (as I’m writing this), only because Book One was an amazingly horrific take on the werewolf genre. I expect another high impact gruesomely horrifying raw continuation of this werewolf tale.
Often times I compare many second books in a series to The Empire Strikes Back, story climax was early, then much of the story and character building is for the next part of the trilogy, that’s exactly what happened here. Picking up immediately where High Moor left of, letting us know what happens after the final battle of the previous book. While the Moonstruck John Simpson is the main suspect in a series of brutal murders, the werewolf clan has sent a, for lack of a better term, hit squad to clean up any and all loose ends, and Simpson is one of those loose ends.
…too stunned to scream he tried to catch his spilling guts only to feel the slippery organs slide through his fingers and land with a wet splash in the gravel…then he heard the growl.
Reynolds was able to keep the same feeling, the gut wrenching, the brutality, the violence and gore, keeping the horror feel to the story, instead of a cutesie paranormal story. There was a ton more werewolf action than the first book, which I appreciated greatly. Along with a few plot twists that I did not see coming. If you were a fan of the first book you must give this a listen. If you have listened to neither and are looking for an original story to disturb your soul, full of action, brutal violence, and yes even some humor and love, you must listen to this series.
The performance by Chris Barnes was fantastic, a full range of character voices, somber pacing when it was needed, explosive action sequences. If you are the type that is unable to listen to an entire audiobook with a narrator that has a thick Scottish accent (yes the story calls for it), then you may not enjoy this as much as I did. Personally I think there is a need for more really good narrator’s with authentic accents, as I have listened to my fare share of stories with American accents that did warrant it. I am looking forward to following Chris’ career as I see nothing but more fabulous story telling.Sequel to Pure Werewolf #horror.
