Seventeen-year-old Lisa Jacobs is determined to solve her father's gruesome murder. But before she can investigate in her own small town, she is forced to spend the summer with her Uncle Clayton, the owner of Grand Hallow - a massive funeral and mortuary operation the size of a small city. Her move to Grand Hallow only deepens the mystery as she begins to suspect the strange and chilling occurrences there are linked to her father's death. With the help of her acid-tongued best friend and deadbeat brother, Lisa must unravel the secrets of Grand Hallow - before it's too late.

Lisa Jacobs discovers her mutilated father’s corpse in their gas-station garage business and vows to find his killer. At 17, she is too young to live on her own, so is forced to live at her uncle’s incredibly successful mortuary in the nearby city. It is here that more and more mysteries unfold about her past, dozens of other unsolved murders and her own mysterious lineage.
Lisa is thrown into a strange world of ghosts, evil, witches and deadly secrets. Never quite sure who to trust, she has to put herself into increasingly dangerous situations not only to unravel the mysteries but just to survive.
There are several difficult to believe scenarios that make the listener keep asking, “really, and no one questioned that, quit their jobs, or called the police?” I can’t really say more about it, without spoiling the plot, but an incredibly successful mortuary with this much murder and mayhem seems highly improbable.
The story goes from murder mystery to magical creatures and back again. It is generally entertaining but just feels like the author threw everything in, including the kitchen sink, making the plot overly complex. The bright spot in all the mayhem is Lisa’s best friend, Tina, a thoroughly likable character.
The story is performed by Alex Ford (female) who does a generally good job with no obvious flaws. She is a good choice as most of the main characters are female. The male voices are fine, though not remarkable. The production quality is excellent.
In the Graveyard Antemortem is generally entertaining with lots of ghoulish horror, cannibalism, and mystery. It is a good fit for the young adult category, but for older teens as there is significant violence and swearing. If you like your horror with a touch of mystery, plenty of gore and teen heroes, you might give this a listen.
