Intense and Scathing Satire!
It is clearly stated in the publisher’s summary that this is a “scathing satire of American politics and culture” with both sci-fi and horror blended in. This is very, very true! Taking place in 2040 with American Democracy at risk, a coup is about to occur.
The author and narrator, Eamon Loingsigh, tells a horrifying story of what America can become if left to narcissism and deadly ideologies. The characters are intensely portrayed to the extreme – Captain Dick, yes, he behaves like a dickish-type person, Abra, behaves much like one would expect a spoiled young child and the list of characters and behaviors grows. While the book had some laughable moments it also had its share of violence and shocking beliefs/behaviors. The basis of this story tells of what can happen if we allow democracy to die and individual desires and aspirations take over. The story did not have a lot of character depth as it was not needed, the dialogue pretty much set the tone and narrative.
As the narrator, Eamon Loingsigh delivered a solid performance, and he kept the chaos and intensity always present. He provided different voices for each character and while some were super annoying, they suited the personality of each perfectly. He not only set the pace of the story but kept true to it. He spoke clearly and with intensity.
I am not a fan of theatrical-sounding audiobooks and this one was theatrical being over-the-top in many ways. This is not the book for anyone who cannot handle severe, biting, and savage moments of satire. While I enjoyed parts of the book, it was extremely intense with a peaceful moment or two. It is an eye-opener.
