There are many misconceptions and misunderstandings about this crime and how survivors deal with it, even as basic as the difference between the freeze response and consent. Talking to survivors unprepared can force them to re-experience the trauma. This book will help prevent that. It is also an excellent reminder that sometimes it’s necessary to just listen, not judge, not expect anything, just listen! Our expression of support is oftentimes a powerful tool to help healing.
Michael James Emberger, the author, clearly explains the reasons behind this highly informative and insightful book: His faith and his heart for survivors. He shares the needs of victims and survivors, further he skillfully guides the listener into thinking beyond their own comfort and caring about another’s. The issue of sexual assault is not just a women’s problem, but that of men as well. A quote he offered up gives the listener a chilling image: “The bruises on my thighs lasted longer than it took for him to forget about me.” This sentence alone speaks volumes. The importance of men listening to this book and learning the path to help the healing begin is vital.
The narrator, Kristina Rothe, is amazing. This is a very tough topic to cover, and she does so professionally and without missing a beat. Her faith and passion are clearly heard by the sincerity and the changes in the lilt of her voice. Her tone is soothing and clear.
I highly recommend and encourage the sharing of this book with men in your family, work, and life. Their support and understanding are the only ways men can come close to helping with the healing process.
