5 Clones

by Edward Bonilla

Action-packed Battle to Save the World!

As a representative of AudioBookReviewer.com here is my review on 5 Clones written by Edward Bonilla and narrated by Edward Bonilla.

The United States has closed all borders to immigrants and non-natives and is under the control of the Union.  California has broken free from the Union and is now its own independent nation.  Dan, along with his 5-clones, lab-made physical replicas, attempt to secretly enter California.  Joining a few others along the way, Dan and his 5 clones become entangled in a battle to save the world.

From the start of the book, you are immersed in a deep and dark world with many different characters.  The setting and events of the dystopian world are built and described in a relatable way.  Details are throughout the book which paints a very clear picture of the times.  The personal relationships and hardships of each character are explored which are all vastly different.  You are kept on your toes with more action and twists to the story.  The ending doesn’t let you down either.  Plenty of action, but it is written in a way that makes you think deeply about clones and society.  Once you reach the conclusion, you see a different side to the characters, clones, and a build-up of the next in line for the series, which I for one am most looking forward to.

Edward Bonilla narrates his story.  He really brings the characters and story to life with his additional voices and fluctuations of the characters.  He mixes in a few different effects (message redacted) and different voices/noises that were a great addition to the story and characters.

Overall, this was a good listening experience.

A CHRISTMAS CAROL
(LIKE THE DICKENS!)

by Wilbur Edwin Henry, Charles Dickens
Narrated by: Wilbur Edwin Henry

Production by: Kindle Direct Publishing

A Fresh Take on a Classic!

A Christmas Carol (Like the Dickens!) is a more modernized version of Dickens' work – by this I mean some of the words and references are updated to be more relevant to today while remaining true to Dickens' writing style and storyline.  We still see Ebenezer grow and become the savior for little Timmy and his family but there is a clearer connection to the listener.  This new revision continues the theme and emotions of the original in a refreshing way and remains to be just as charming as ever.

Wilbur Edwin Henry recognized the value of Charles Dickens' writing and his story: A Christmas Carol.  His revisions to make the story more relatable to today was a huge undertaking and could have changed too much.  Fortunately, Henry is a talented writer who was able to revamp just enough.  When I review books, I refuse to look at the publisher’s descriptions, so I was a little confused for the first few minutes until I realized this was a deliberate effort in updating the story.  It was well done!

The narrator is also Wilbur Edwin Henry and he delivered a strong performance.  His accents remained true to the original version and the personalities of each character were made stronger through his narration.  His speech was smooth and moved at a good solid pace.  I found myself enjoying his narration very much!

This is a very good rendition of the popular A Christmas Carol that allows younger generations to continue to appreciate the story.

A Christmas War

by Harry Karapalides
Narrated by: David Scott Jarvis

Production by: Harry Karapalides

Edge of your Seat, Nail-Biting & Emotional Time!

Bradford Reimer loathes Christmas and all it stands for; he has lost his faith. Forced to leave his ill daughter and wife behind as he goes to fight in WWII, it is here amidst the death and violence that Reimer begins to understand faith. Pushed beyond his limits, Reimer is reminded that he is not alone. Aided by a grandfatherly village man along with his granddaughter, Reimer begins to find his faith. However, it is not until he returns home that he discovers the full extent of the power of faith and the mysterious power faith holds. This story also has a supernatural/paranormal feel to it at times.

I despise crying and this book made me cry! The author, Harry Karapalides, builds a strong story of faith and redemption. The listener cannot help but be drawn into the story and feel the pain and confusion, love, and fears that Reimer carries with each step. Karapalides carefully built each character to reinforce the power of faith and redemption. This is a powerful story that will have you, the listener, looking more closely at your life, passion, love, and faith.

The narrator, David Scott Jarvis, provides each character with a unique voice and captures the personality and presence of each character expertly. How he kept from crying is beyond me! I liked his pace, he spoke methodically, clearly, and with a rich voice. Between the author and narrator, this was a nail-biting story.

This is one of those stories that tug at your heartstrings and beliefs with a twinge or two of the supernatural. This was a good book that holds your attention in a variety of ways, I look forward to more by Karapalides!

A GHOST FOR A CLUE
Immortology, Book 1

by C.L.R. Draeco
Narrated by: C.L.R. Draeco, Win Santos, R.D. Gerard, Alexi Wolfe, Timmy Street, Franco

Production by: C.L.R. Draeco

Beyond the Veil and More !

Bram Morrison, an average guy with hopes of soon becoming an astronaut just took an unexpected career turn.  After having received a phone call from a deceased friend, his curiosity is piqued – what happens after death?  Is death final or is there something more? What happens to our soul or spark when we die?  Setting out to be the skeptic, Morrison becomes driven to find answers.

C.L.R. Draeco, the author, poses a common question and carefully weaves a compelling story around it involving characters that are easy to like and understand.  Draeco takes the listener into an imaginative science-type space and engages them to think more deeply about the questions and possible answers in a creative and critical manner.  Each character is well developed, and the plot has several twists.  I was intrigued by the “plants talking” aspect of the book.  Unique and unusual!

The voice actors, each provide a clear spoken voice reflective of their character’s personality.  It is a well-done performance with each voice actor delivering their lines smoothly and clearly.

This is an intriguing book that captures the attention of the listeners.  The cover is slightly misleading as it indicates more of an “outer-space” type storyline.  However, after having heard the book, I have a much better understanding of the cover and its deeper meaning.

A GRIMOIRE DARK

by D.S. Quinton
Narrated by: Allen Grunerud

Production by: Duane E. Schafer

Stephen King and Edgar Allen Poe all in One!

Having spent a good portion of her life in an orphanage, Del Larouche is able to leave there and begin her life as an adult. However, she can’t just leave Jimmy behind so she visits him until she can spring him from there. Del finds herself gifted with a talent and a heritage that had remained hidden until the dark spirit made its appearance. Del now has some decisions to make, not all of them easy!

This book takes place in 1963 and has strong references to Edgar Allen Poe. Taking place in New Orleans, the listener is gifted with an authentic creole accent for every character (well done!) and tidbits of voodoo and other dark magics. The author, D.S. Quinton captures the attention of the listener and holds it from word one to the end. He weaves a carefully constructed and well-delivered horror plot. His characters are well developed and at one point he got a “YES” for how he handled the Sister!

The narrator, Allen Grunerud, gives a strong and solid performance. His creole accent is well done, realistic and at times hard to understand but in a way that one expects (specifically for the handicapped character, Jimmy). However, it is rich and authentically done.

Overall, this book was well done, it was horrifying, to say the least … and the performance was captivating. I am looking forward to more!

A HAG RISES FROM THE ABYSS
A Fantasy Novel (Alexander Southerland, P.I., Book 3)

by Douglas Lumsden
Narrated by: Duffy P. Weber

Production by: Dougals Lumsden

A Hag, a Singer, and a PI Walk into a Bar!

Private eye, Alexander Southerland, has a knack for finding himself in trouble!  This time he finds himself tangling with the Woman in White, aka an avenging spirit whom he had the displeasure of encountering years before in another life and time.  Now, he is charged with solving the murder of a nightclub singer and her children.  As in most corrupt towns, Southerland has to walk a fine line or find himself “owing” the wrong person!

The author, Douglas Lumsden continues to develop a world of intrigue, mystery, and supernatural combined in an intriguing way.  He develops each character vividly and with a uniqueness that keeps the listener returning for his next book.  The building of the storyline is slowed down in order to build the best suspense. My favorite is badass!  Love that guy!

The narrator, Duffy Weber gives each character a unique and distinct voice that helps the listener keep the characters and the story clear.  Weber is also consistent with each book, the voice for Southerland is always spot-on.  Weber captures the essence of each character and projects perfectly.

A HUNDRED SWEET PROMISES

by Author Sepehr Haddad
Narrated by: Tim Fearon

Production by: Appleyard & Sons Publishing

Romantic Historical Fiction with Twists!

Sepehr Haddad, the author, shares the story of his grandfather who lived during WWI and grew to love a princess. When one meets their true love, life sometimes has a way of getting in the way. In this moving book, Haddad's grandmother shares the family secret with her grandson.

His grandfather, the famed composer, Nasrosoltan traveled from Persia to Russia to study under famous music masters. While there, he became the music teacher of one of the Romanov princesses. However, both the Tsar and his Persian parents had different ideas and life plans for their children. A sweet romantic love story that shows the depth of broken hearts and how cruel life can be. This book also demonstrates just how powerful politics are everywhere.

Haddad writes the story well, intermingling creative fiction with facts. This book was very well researched and gives an accurate view of that time and culture. This is far more than a love story, it is political intrigue, revolution, and more.

The narrator, Tim Fearon gives a strong performance. His cadence is rich and smooth, his speech is impeccable. He gives an impassioned performance.

A NIGHTMARE ON ELK STREET
The Bright Falls Mysteries, Book 3

by C.T. Phipps, Michael Suttkus
Narrated by: Arielle DeLisle

Production by: Crossroad Press

An 80’s B-Slasher with an “Endeering” Twist!

The Shaman Weredeer, Jane Doe is spreading herself a tad bit thin nowadays.  Being Shaman of Bright Falls doesn’t take care of the bills or much of anything else, so she takes Lucien up on his offer to be security for his new venture into B-Slasher Movies with a heavy focus on supernatural stars!  CT Phipps and Michael Suttkus, the authors, bring in several other characters from several series which adds to the fun!  Jane and the gang face some of the deadliest 80’s movie monsters head-on with some delightful puns and gore.

CT Phipps and Michael Suttku are consistent with their character’s development and personalities, giving them pun and pop culture references peppering their dialog.  I honestly do not know how Arielle DeLisle can narrate without breaking out in laughter or groans from some of the puns.  DeLisle delivers a strong, smooth performance giving each character a unique voice that matches their personality and role in the story.  She keeps the pace steady and the consistency of the voices accurate.

I enjoy Phipps's and Suttkus’s books specifically because of the pop culture references and the way the dialog evolves.  I love the introspective dialog that the main characters have with themselves.

This is an excellent series with strong characters and plots with twists and turns that one does not necessarily anticipate.  Fluid and easy to follow, this is a series that continually brings in characters from his other books successfully.  While I normally don’t mention the cover, the artwork for this cover is perfect!

A Season of Sons
Black Spiral Series, Book 1

by Rob Tucker

Terrifying Supernatural Killer!

Antonio Guzman is a killer with a supernatural alter ego.  As a very deadly and macabre killer, he uses a variety of methods to convince his victims that he is supernaturally possessed by dark forces.  Guzman extracts a price for the successes of people his alter ego identifies.  Faced with solving a variety of vicious crimes, Agent Leon Safullo must catch the killer by using alternate methods outside the norm.

One such victim is Paul Evans who is on the run with his son trying to elude the killer who is demanding the ultimate price for Evans’ success – possession of his son.  Fleeing with his son, Evans finds himself deep in a remote area of the Rocky Mountains during a vicious and deadly winter storm.  Good versus evil, light versus dark in this deadly supernatural thriller that will keep you on the edge of your chair.

The author, Rob Tucker, takes his time building the story and provides strong character development to support the path the story takes.  Dialog as well as reactions of each character are natural and convincing.  Tucker is a masterful storyteller as he crafts the story vividly.  The death of the evangelist is convincing yet horrifying and sets the beginning of the story perfectly.

The narrator, Scott MacDonald provides a strong performance.  He further moves the story along by providing the perfect amount of emotion and exhilaration at the appropriate places.  His cadence is smooth and effortless.

A Tremendous A Lot

by Jordan Dickerson
Narrated by: Graham Mack

Production by: Redmond Waters LLC

A Thrilling Collection!

This is a collection of three stories that explore on the dark side, one’s justification for living, finding love, and most importantly how to stay alive!  Pregnancy labor foils one woman’s escape to leave her abusive husband, a man of God, and war are the unique plot pieces for these stories.

The tales contained are full of twists turns and surprises keeping you glued to the story you are listening to.  A few of the tales felt a bit rushed or incomplete, but for the most part, I was hooked.  There is quite a bit of violence, so please be prepared for that.  Otherwise, the short stories were great, especially the last half of the chapters.

The cover is intriguing and like the stories, unique. It hints that things are a bit twisted and different. Very apropos for the stories!

Graham Mack narrates this book.  He did a pretty good job with the reading.  I feel like the tempo was a bit slow, but I still enjoyed the reading.

A TRIP THROUGH THE DOLL FIELDS

by Elizabeth Fanning
Narrated by: Skye Alley

Production by: Elizabeth Fanning

Magical Realism - The Good, Bad, and Questionable!

This is one of those rare gems that must be listened to carefully to fully understand what is going on because if you don’t, you will miss a highly entertaining yet thought-provoking, and at times soul-wrenching book. The author, Elizabeth Fanning has focused on several characters that intertwine by the end of the book in mysterious ways. One couple visits a nudist colony after escaping house arrest. Their story becomes woven with a couple of Baby Jesuses thieves. Yes, you read that correctly – they steal Baby Jesuses from nativity scenes at churches. Annalise and Lakshmi are responsible and while it’s all fun and games, it becomes real when Annalise realizes and accepts her deadly illness.

Fanning creates characters that are unique yet poignant. Each character, while not conventional, encounters real-life situations that make the listener wonder what they would do in those same circumstances. With each passing minute, I learned more and more about each character.

The narrator, Skye Alley does a first-rate performance. She masterfully gives each character a unique voice and moves the story at a steady pace. Her voice was smooth and clear.

This is one book that will leave the listener pondering long after the end of the program. It explores a range of human emotions, experiences, and choices – the good, bad, and questionable but all magical in a way.

A Troll Walks Into a Bar:
A Noir Urban Fantasy Novel
(Alexander Southerland, PI., Book 1)

by Douglas Lumsden

He Had me at A Troll Walks into a Bar!

I thought this story was creative and interesting.  It had everything a listener would want in a book – mystery, action, interesting characters, and magic.  The characters were well developed and fit perfectly into their roles in the story.  I truly enjoyed the wererat, Badass, and Smoky as side characters.  The role of each character was well defined and detailed.

The storyline flowed smoothly and kept one’s interest piqued from beginning to end.  While I had not planned on listening to this story in one sitting, it just happened.  I lost all track of time and became embroiled in the plot.

The narrator, Duffy Weber, gives an excellent performance providing each character with a distinct voice and enhancing their personality through that voice.  I could picture the wererat bouncing up and down on his feet in excitement not only through the word of the author but the style of narration Weber chose to represent him.  Weber is consistent in his narration and articulate.

This is a fun book, one that you will not want to put down until the end, and when the end happens, you will long for more.  Lumsden has the creative ability to keep his audience captivated.

A Witch Steps Into My Office
Alexander Southerland, P.I. Book 2

by Douglas Lumsden

Narrated by: Duffy Weber

When a Witch Needs a P.I.

When one stumbles across a good book, one tends to want more and this is the case with book 2 of Douglas Lumsden’s (Alexander Southerland, P.I. series) A Witch Steps into My Office.  I thoroughly enjoyed this book as well.   Alexander is joined once again with Badass, Smoky, and Crawford in this wild adventure with witchcraft and magic.  Alexander is facing an unknown entity who is pulling all the strings. Curses and some weird-looking entities stalking him make this book dark yet highly entertaining.

Its title is catchy and the world-building, as well as the dialog, is rich and vivid.   Each character is well developed and adds to the flow of the story well.  Lumsden is a masterful storyteller with a rich imagination.  He takes the Noir genre to a new level!

The narrator, Duffy Weber, excels in his performance.  He slips each character on making the story even more engaging.  His voice has the noir quality that enriches the story perfectly.  His cadence is smooth and flows.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book 2 in this series and hope for another one sooner than later!

ABANDONED: ARRIVALS AND AWAKENINGS
A Lively Deadmarsh Novel, Book 1

by Katie Berry
Narrated by: Alex Knox

Production by: Tantor Audio

Guests Arrive and Then …!

On New Year’s Eve in 1981, a total of 98 star-studded people disappeared while inside the infamous Sinclair Resort Hotel. Gone. Without a trace. On the 40th anniversary, Lively Deadmarsh and his twin sister, Minerva have been hired to solve the mystery. Together with their preternatural skills, they begin to get a glimpse into the secrets of the hotel.

Katie Berry, the author, does an excellent job of creating a horror novel complete with a creepy location, terrifying situations, and enough paranormal mystery based on past experiences (aka Roanoke) that she had me at 30 seconds! She tells the story with rich and vivid details. She is masterful at character development – the descriptions of the mysterious old men … perfect! Just when you think you know where the story is going, she does a plot twist, and you don’t see it coming. Each character is carefully developed, holding back just enough information to get you hooked before revealing who they really are and their role in the story. The dialog was smooth, keeping with the story. The interaction between the brother and sister was realistic and natural sounding.

The narrator, Alex Knox does an excellent job of portraying the characters and keeping the story moving along with his cultured voices. He uses unique voices to help keep the listener engaged and clear. His pronunciation is clear and varies in pitch according to what is going on. I enjoyed his performance.

This book ends with a cliffhanger and while one could probably imagine an ending for it, don’t! Berry, I suspect, will surprise you and provide a more riveting end than one you might be prepared for!

ABANDONED: BEGINNINGS AND BETRAYALS
A Lively Deadmarsh Novel, Book 2

by Katie Berry
Narrated by: Alex Knox

Production by: Tantor Audio

Haunting Jump-Worthy Moments!

The story of the Sinclair Resort Hotel, Lively and Minerva Deadmarsh, and Inspector John Harder continues to unfold.  Lively and Minerva make some disconcerting discoveries and uncover answers that had eluded everyone until now. Inspector John Harder is not only searching for answers, his missing officers but now his wife.  All these stories are unfolding together but separately. Is this a supernatural tale, a tale of dimensions, a tale of lost time, or something deadlier and eviler?

Katie Berry, the author, continues to weave the tale of the Sinclair Resort Hotel and create plot twists that are both fascinating and horrifying.  Just when you think you know what’s going on, bam … she broadsides you with an expertly devised plot twist.  Characters continue to evolve as their time in the hotel grows.  Lively’s enthusiasm with meatloaf MRE’s is a bit terrifying. The dialog flows smoothly and authentically.

The narrator, Alex Knox gives another top-notch performance.  His voices are consistent with the previous book and his ease at performing is obvious.  I enjoy his use of unique voices and his cadence. He moves the story along smoothly and interjects the perfect amount and appropriate emotions.  He is a joy to hear.

This is a series that I have enjoyed from the moment I started listening.  It is through the work of Berry and Knox for the listener to lose themselves in the story.  Like the first, this has some jump-worthy moments! I cannot wait to see where this story takes me.

ACADIA

by Sterling Nixon
Narrated by: Jason Finch

Production by: S & J. Publishing

Review by T. C. White

World Shattering!!

What if you believed and were taught your entire life that you lived in the only ‘human’ city only to discover that had been a lie? The monsters and creatures that tried to destroy their city failed, but this lone girl, Jessica, may do this single-handedly. Cojax, the protagonist, is faced with decisions that could destroy his world or save it.

This was a very well-written and narrated audiobook. The battles were intense and attention-grabbing. The author, Sterling Nixon, does a great job in world-building and character development as well as providing rich details that are vivid. At times, the story moved a little slow, but in the end, it was well worth the listen. Jessica was by far my favorite. I love her will and determination. I am excited for the next book in this series, Titan.

Jason Finch narrated this story and did a great job. His narration was smooth and clear, he projected the perfect amount of inflection and emotion. I look forward to hearing more narration by Finch.

Against the Wind
Jane-Claire’s Personal Salvation

Narrated by: Dana Miller

Production by: Dawn C. Crouch

Powerful and Moving Story!

Jane-Claire Stevens is a naïve fifteen-year-old with high aspirations of becoming a filmmaker.  That is until a devastating hurricane hits her community wiping out everything she knows and loves.  Along with her mother and brother, Jane-Claire relocates to a city that is less than friendly.  Her father, a doctor remains behind.  Feeling alienated in her new home, she discovers that her BFF is trying to survive in the hurricane-ravaged area.  Bent on rescuing her friend and others, Jane-Claire tries to return.  However, before she can save anyone, she must do some growing up and be less naïve, more trusting, and accept help when it comes.

This book was action-packed, and filled with realistic moments of sadness, fear, frustration, and more.  The author, Dawn C. Crouch, is magnificent.  She captures the essence of the situation and people relaying their intense feelings expertly and accurately.  She is gifted in painting a complete picture with words.  Each character was well developed and held a significant role in the story.  This story has stayed with me for several days now.

The narrator, Dana Miller, gives an exceptional and touching performance moving the story along smoothly.  Miller gives each character a voice that reflects their personality, role, and essence. I thought her cadence was well-timed and kept the listener listening.

This is the second book I have listened to by Dawn Crouch and I was not disappointed!

A-MUSED: MY BIG FAT GREEK MYTHOLOGY

by Glenda N. Rogers
Narrated by: Jaelanne Gilliam

Production by: Glenda N. Rogers

Delightful, Whimsical, and Tons of Fun!

A beautiful and stunning woman, yet one that is quiet and basically an introvert who by trade is an astrophysicist, heading off to a long-overdue vacation. Rani is this woman and without knowing the how or why she manages to not only wreak havoc on earth but the constellations as well! Whether wide awake or sound asleep, she encounters men that are suave, debonair, and downright sinfully delectable! Her real-world and dreams meld into one and it is up to her to figure out how to save the world, constellations, and her sanity as well as foil the villains!

The author, Glenda N. Rogers, creates a delightful tale heavy on humor, quirkiness, fun, and light entertainment. The plot is well-developed as are the characters, although they come at you rather quickly at times. Each plot twist is unexpected and unfolds in a natural manner.

The narrator, Jaelanne Gilliam adds to the humor with her performance. Her voice for Rani is light and projects the emotional range needed to compliment the story. Gilliam gives each character a unique voice that keeps the flow smooth.

I enjoyed this story! It has magic, mythology, fun, romance, and is whimsical.

ANGUS
A Broken World, Book 8

by Kate L. Mary
Narrated by: J J Hosenfeld

Production by: Kate L. Mary

Reflective, Action-Packed, and Zombies!

Angus James has lived a long life, got up close and personal with death many a time, and managed to survive. Alone for years now, Angus has lost hope. Further, he finds himself struggling with being in the company of a young girl named Naya. Naya lost her mother to a zombie bite and now Angus is responsible for her and her for him. Together they seek safety, but Angus is not sure he will survive being in the presence of another living human as Naya’s presence is dredging up memories he had buried long ago, memories of his wives, his daughter, friends, and more. For Angus, he’s not sure if a zombie or his memories will kill him first!

Kate Mary, the author, has created a life and a world for Angus to inhabit, and while this is book eight, it can be read as a stand-alone. She carefully fills in enough detail of Angus’ backstory that the memories tormenting Angus are complete and understandable. We can not only understand his grief and angst but feel it as well. We are shown his humanity and ability to hope which Angus does not even realize exists within him. I enjoyed this story about Angus and will most likely check out the rest of the series. Mary is a creative storyteller weaving details and emotions throughout this book.

The narrator, J J Hosenfeld gives Angus a strong yet weary and unique voice that helps keep the listener hooked. His other voices are well-done for Naya and others, but it is the voice of Angus that is mesmerizing allowing the listener to feel his tiredness, his experiences, and his age.

This is a reflective book with zombies that is a must-listen! I enjoyed hearing the backstory of a character through his reflective moments - makes for a better connection, now I want to know more about him and his adventures.

Anything but Treason

Adventures of a Victorian Soldier, Book 1

by M.J. Twomey
Narrated by: Joel Daffurn

Publisher: M.J. Twomey

Injustice, Class System, War, and More!

Before becoming Lieutenant, Samuel Kingston had to learn a valuable lesson – the aristocrats that are his neighbors, friends in school, and such are not fair or just men.  Rather, he learns rather difficultly that they are vile men who care about none but themselves and their rank/stature/money.  Kingston learns firsthand the difficulty of choosing between family and justice.  Every step he takes, he is met with betrayal in one form or another and he learns firsthand the inequity of the class hierarchy – one he used to be blind to.

The author, M. J. Twomey, has taken historical facts and carefully woven a creative story that demonstrates the unfairness of the class system and war.  Twomey carefully builds the story with details and rich characters.  I will say, I was not looking forward to hearing this book on war or one about a soldier.  However, Twomey’s skill in crafting a story made this book captivating and interesting.  I was not lost in the war or military terminology, or the graphic, gory details of death.  Twomey paints a picture with words, few and select words that communicate the story effectively.  Each character was fully developed and folded into the story appropriately.

My favorite part, detail-wise, was the shortcut that Kingston with his friends and future wife took and the manner in which it was described, I could see it!  The crumbling ground, the horse falling, the young man swinging slightly as he clung to the last few remaining vestiges of ground.

The narrator, Joel Daffurn, gave a wonderful performance.  He spoke clearly and gave each character a unique voice that helped keep the story straight.  He was wonderful at capturing the personality of the main characters and projecting this in the voice.  I thought his cadence in narration was smooth and steady with just the correct amount of inflection.

Blood Rain

by James Keith
Narrated by: Jason Markiewitz

Blood, Gore, Action, and Satan!

This is an interesting book that involves crime sprees, two detectives, and Satan! Bent on solving murders of the most detectable kind with spare body parts lying around and other gore, a pair of detectives try to bring about justice and put an end to the spree. Little did they know what they were going up against!

James Keith, the Author, details a thrilling story of death, mystery, and a little bit of faith. Keith weaves a magical story of demons and death with detail and a vivid imagination that keeps the listener spellbound. Character development, as well as plot development, was solid and the plot twists were well executed.

The narrator, Jason Markiewitz, adds to the story with his skilled and talented voice acting. Each character had a unique voice and reflected the personality developed by the author. He provides the listener with the right amount of inflection of emotion and his cadence is consistent and helps to keep the listener on the edge of their chair.

This is one of those rare books where one’s imagination is challenged to keep up!

Blue Ridge Whiskey

by Aila Skye
Narrated by: Alex Teebo

Across the Pond Romance Continues!

Susan Miller has returned home and is moving forward after having graduated from college. Working at a tourism magazine as the manager in the printing department, Susan is ready for the next chapter of her life … until she receives a much wanted but dreaded phone call from her ex, Danny. He plans to visit and hopefully, the sparks will fly again more successfully.

Aila Skye, the author, reunites the two characters flawlessly and with realistic emotions. Rich with vivid details, Skye captures the listener’s attention as her characters develop and their journey continues. The story moves forward steadily with believable dialog and interactions.

The narrator, Alexa Teebo, gives another excellent performance. Her voice flows smoothly and clearly with good pacing.

There were no issues with the quality or production of this audiobook.

Bootleggers

by Paul Rudd

Narrated by Jordan Wolfe, Jennifer Martin, Rod Glenn, Emily Wyatt, Caitlyn Wolfe

Awesome ‘80’s Throwback!

Bootleggers bring us back to the ’80s for a story full of adventure. The tone that is set in the beginning has a bit of a humorous approach that mostly carries on throughout the story. I found it difficult to stop the story and kept wanting more. Just when you think the story is going dark, there are twists and changes that keep you engaged. This story is a very clever piece of writing and one that I am hoping will continue. I highly recommend this book!

Character and story development was well done and added to the enjoyment of the story. This is one of those unique listens that keep the listener engaged!

Unfortunately, the only downside to this book was that the sound effects were a bit overwhelming. The narration was otherwise nicely done with specific voices and reactions for each character. I enjoyed the multiple performers.

BRETT ALWAYS WINS
BRETT CORNELL MYSTERIES, BOOK 3

by Author: David D’Aguanno
Narrated by: Travis Henry Carter

Production by: David D’Aguanno

1980’s Sleuth!

Brett is a dynamic sleuth with ties in the right and wrong places. Also, he’s a very macho man. He is charismatic (sort of), definitely egotistical, smart mouth who knows he’s good-looking and is more than willing to share it with the world in a loud obnoxious New Jersey-like voice. Toss in that he is a good PI with an observation level of +10 and you have a world-class sleuth. Then again, he does tend to get himself into trouble. Right now, he’s trying to figure out how a dead woman who died at 7:30 PM is seen out dancing well after her death time. Now a man like Brett makes enemies and he has a few out to get him …

David D’Aguanno, the author, has a strong writing style and has done an excellent job at creating the character of Brett. This is the first book in this series I have listened to and while I found it interesting, I had to laugh … D’Aguanno gave Brett a solid sense of humor and wit – not something one would expect out of this type of guy when you first hear him. The story is well written, and character development is good. Frankly, while I remember all the characters, Brett just stands out well above all the other characters. He is a character you either love, or you hate.

The narrator, Travis Henry Carter, wears Brett like a second skin. His voice of Brett is perfect! He gives a strong performance that leaves the listener grounded in the world of Brett. His cadence was good, there were a couple of times when he rushed a bit, but it did not affect the story.

Broken Crossroads
Knights of the Shadows, Book 1

by Patrick LeClerc
Narrated by: Hank Hayden

An Interesting and Multi-talented Pair!

Lots of action and intrigue.  Trilisean is a woman of many talents – an acrobat, former slave, and a master thief.  Conn is a mercenary with deadly blade skills.  Together they are formidable and their joint relationship while not romantic there is definitely some chemistry between them.  The excitement begins when they become embroiled in things other than minor thievery.

The author, Patrick LeClerc is skilled at world-building and character development.  His story is fresh yet very reminiscent of the vintage sword and sorcery tales.  His dialog is strong, advances the story, and keeps the book flowing smoothly.  The plot twists were perfectly executed and smooth.

The narrator, Hank Hayden gives a strong performance complete with unique and consistent voices that fit the personality of each character.  The words flow smoothly and in a nice voice tinged with the exact amount of inflection for each character and situation.

This is a quality story both in design and performance.  I hope to experience more works by LeClerc and Hayden.

BROKEN ROCK
Broken Chords, Book 1

by K.A. Finn
Narrated by: Dan Calley

Production by: Cooper Publishing

Haunting Past, Life Choices and More!

Tate Archer is an Irish rock star going places until someone begins sending him cryptic messages about his unseemly past.  Once he returns home to recover from his drug addiction, he meets Chloe Quinn.  Chloe likes the simple life and when she discovers who Tate truly is … things become rocky.  Between his past, the mysterious messages, and the rumors that begin circulating, Tate finds his life choices hanging in the balance especially where Chloe is concerned.

K.A. Finn weaves a tantalizing tale of romance, decisions, and life.  The plot was well-planned, and the twists were not only intriguing but unexpected at times.  Her rich descriptions and character development were realistic and pleasing.

The narrator, Dan Calley gave a performance that was smooth in cadence, his accents were perfect, and his voice for Tate was captivating.  Calley moved the story along with his skilled intonation.

This is an action-packed romance full of intrigue and thrills taking real-life situations and incorporating them into this tale of romance and fame.  I am looking forward to book 2 in this series.

CHACE SCENE
A Grace Texas Murder Mystery

by Cherry Northcutt
Narrated by: Amy Verdon

Production by: Cherri Northcutt

Caught Up in a Wedding Mystery!

Jessica Hart has been promised the career-making opportunity of co-writing her first magazine cover story with the infamous Donna Vance, celebrity author. The thing is Ms. Vance has lots of enemies as her cover stories focus on the “what not to do” aspect of every story she writes more times than not humiliates those people involved unmercifully. Jessica’s more than a tad bit worried about this wedding story.

Jessica’s selection to co-write the story is because she knows the groom so well – her ex-husband! It’s not long before a dead body shows up and disaster after disaster happens – including using her aunts’ home for the wedding nuptials! The fun just continues with each word that is spoken!!!!

The author, Cherry Northcutt delivers yet another wonderful cozy mystery that is fun and thrilling at the same time. Her characters are continually developing their relationships and personalities, new characters are folded in smoothly and completely. Northcutt delivers a well-planned mystery that has a couple of twists endearing the heroine of her story to the listener even more.

The narrator, Amy Verdon delivers an excellent performance giving each character a unique voice and personality. Her performance is smooth and consistent. She projects the proper amount of inflection with each character and scene.

I thoroughly enjoy Northcutt’s series, A Grace Texas Murder Mystery. I cannot wait for the next one out! They are fun, suspenseful, and have good twists.

Cherry Laurel

by Scott William Burrows

What Happens When You Have Everything Taken Away!

Cherry Laurel by Scott William Burrows is an interesting mix of what could have been and what was.  As a man with places to go, Nickie Roritor had it all – as a football player, his life changed in mere minutes!  Now, he’s a man with nothing and his career is that of a factory worker.  He now drinks to forget what might have been.  That is until he met Lisa – now his life has changed but not necessarily for the good!

Scott William Burrows, the author, diligently builds each character making them relatable and giving them depth.  The storyline – what might have been and what comes to pass is powerful and a bit unsettling.  Nickie is on a mission, one that will not end well for someone (no spoilers here).  Burrows maintains the suspense and delivers an excellent noir-like fiction book.   The tone of this book clearly communicates the feeling of loss, redemption, and a range of other emotions.   He knows the value of keeping the listener on the edge of their chair!

I normally do not comment on the cover but in this case, I have to say it is fitting - the black and white, the empty space, the clouds, everything in this cover speaks to the book in one way or another!

The narrator, Marc Ginsburg gives an excellent performance.  He speaks clearly and with distinct voices.  He has a solid cadence to his speech delivering a solid performance.

Clan MacInnes Series

by: Aila Skye

Production: Philip Angus

Series Collections

The Voyage
Book 1

Honor and Duty VS the Heart!

The Voyage, Clan MacInnes is a fast-moving story in which Elise is a strong spirited, intelligent woman who finds herself in a male-dominated world of fifth-century Scotland. Clans are fighting one another for control and land. Elise was taught at an early age to be fierce, independent, and strong. Her father promises her to a man she does not love. Although she is very much aware of her duty, it is her heart that is rebelling. Calum Baran is her heart's desire but not necessarily what’s best for her clan or for fulfilling her duty. With an impending war between tribes and a fight for control, Elise must determine the path she will take.

Aila Skye, the author, provides a well written, although brief, romantic adventure. The dialog is well done giving each character their own voice which reveals their dynamics and emotions. The characters and dialog move the story forward at a steady pace. The historical aspect of this first book is informative and accurate.

The narrator, Angus Scott gave a solid and well-done performance. Although the story is brief, Scott adds to the story by providing just the right amount of passion and emotion. His ability to switch between characters and maintain their personality is exceptional. Not all male voice actors are adept at female character voices, but Scott excels and gives a polished performance.

This is a very brief story but one that will keep you intrigued, not wanting it to end.

Flight of the Sea Eagle
Book 2

Delightful Twists!

The saga of the MacInnes Clan takes up where book 1 left off seamlessly.  Elise, recognizing her father’s age and disposition takes the leadership role in his army and leads them into battle.  Her love for Calum is still growing and she finds herself face to face with the enemy – a dashing handsome and barely clothed man!  Having to play the diplomat, Elise must hear the stranger’s tale and make the decision whether he is trustworthy or if it is a trap.  Elise must keep her head and heart in balance as she faces this new situation and growing concern in the North.

Aila Skye keeps building the characters and as she adds new ones, they grow in conjunction with the story and other characters nicely.  The story moves forward smoothly and with ease.  The dialog is realistic and polished.  Skye gives her listeners an insider’s view into the thoughts and heart of Elise, not so much yet for Calum – he is still playing his cards close to his tartan!

The narrator, John McNee gives a strong performance and provides a strong female character voice as well as male.  I am impressed with McNee as not many voice actors can do this.  His performance is even and straightforward.  He speaks clearly and with the appropriate accent.

Overall, this is a good series.  Although the books are short, they are dramatic and graphically described.  Skye delivers yet another effective installment to the MacInnes Saga.  This is a very good historical romance series!

A Wolf Among Men
Book 3

Desires and Responsibilities - Intense Choices!

Clan MacInnes: A Wolfe Among Men is the third installment written by Aila Skye.  Elise has selected the man she wishes to spend her life with but then life intervenes.  Caught between two men and her duty, Elise must marry the man that the Stone of Destiny selects.  That man must be descended from past kings … where does that leave Calum?  The Wild and gorgeous Pictish Chieftain temps Elise as no other.  Will she follow her heart, her wild and passionate desires or will she bow to the Stone of Destiny and fulfill her responsibility to her people?

Aila Skye, the author, portrays the struggles of Elise with clarity and insight into hidden desires.  Although there is action in this book, it is more focused on the internal struggle one might face when dealing with matters of the heart and impetuousness of desire.

The narrator, John McNee, once again gives a stunning performance.  He has a style of narration that allows the listener to see the characters more accurately.  His rhythm is smooth and steady, his pronunciation is clear, and his performance is masterful and polished.

Again, this is a very short book, but it is powerfully packed with emotional and heart felt desires and decisions.  The listener is drawn into the book and ponders whether they would make the same decisions as Elise.  The third installment is a natural flow to the series.

Mark of the Fox
Book 4

Accepting the Mark!

Elise and Callum have married and in an effort to build a stronger army, they are preparing to welcome the Pict Leader’s daughter into the MacInnes clan via marriage thus strengthening relationships amongst her people in order to fight the invaders from the North. Preparing for the marriage and Callum’s new role as the leader, Elise has her hands full.

The story that Aila Skye, the author, is weaving is exciting.  Based on historical facts, the creativity that Skye adds to the story of the MacInnes Clan is captivating and intriguing.  The personal touches that show Elise as not only supportive but as a strong and intelligent woman are deliberate and well-executed.  This section of the story is a tearjerker as Elise must help her new husband, Callum assume the role of king.  She has to convince her new husband to obtain the “Mark of the Fox” in order to gain the support and allegiance of the Pict people while also balancing other relationships.

The narrator, John McNee, performs the book expertly.  His cadence is smooth and his array of voices for each character is well performed.  While most men do not do the female voices well, McNee is the exception.  He never breaks from the voice making the story easy to follow.

While this is a short installment of the continued tale of the MacInnes Clan, the dialog and storyline are well-developed as are the characters.  While I prefer longer performances, the style in which this book is being developed is perfect for the story as it gives the listener time to absorb the story, and appreciate the characters and the historical information more solidly.

The Gathering
Book 5

The Battle Begins!

Elise and Callum have united the clan and must now go to fight the battle against the invaders. Although Callum proves he is a strong and intelligent leader and Elise is a strong-willed woman with fighting skills, this battle takes a deadly toll.  Elise experiences a loss that she could not have foreseen.

Aila Skye, the author, weaves an intense storyline around the historical lives of the MacInnes playing on the emotions of the listener as the characters have become more real with each book.  Skye knows how to play the heartstrings and plays them she does!   With each installment of the series, Skye maintains the plot, character development and suspense.  Although each installment has some closure, it is with plot twists and action that keep the listener engaged.

Once again, John McNee, the narrator, gives an excellent performance.  He provides the right balance of emotion helping to build the suspense and the right mood for the listener to become lost within the story.

CLAW
A Canadian Thriller

by Katie Berry
Narrated by: Alex Knox

Production by: Tantor Audio

A Thrill a Minute!

Set in Western Canada, specifically in an area that experienced a gold rush in 1895 is now experiencing a different kind of rush.  Fear!  Christine Moon, the new conservation officer is trying to solve several missing person reports, deaths, and violent attacks by a mysterious, very hungry, huge, and particularly vicious creature.  What she learns almost too late is the effect gold fever has on certain people!

Katie Berry, the author, creates a riveting story that is action-packed and reflects human greed perfectly.  In addition, it captures the behavior of the creature perfectly – its reactions, instincts, hunting, and such to survive.  Each character, including the creature, is fully developed.   While parts of the story are predictable, it does not take away from the scare factor at all!  There are still sections that will make you bite your nails, lean forward, and other such behaviors one assumes when engrossed in a story such as this.

Berry paints a vivid and striking picture with details that add to the tense and frightening plot.  With help from the narrator, Alex Knox, this is one book that will grab you and not let go until the end.   Each character had a unique voice so there was never confusion over who was speaking.  In addition, each voice captured the essence of the character (including the sneaky and corrupt officer).  Between the voices and the delivery of the performance, Knox keeps the story moving along at a steady pace.

Overall, this book has a lot going on, but it is well planned and written.  One cannot help but keep listening and NOT in the dark either!  Completely scary!

The cover is stunning.  It clearly portrays what the book is about – something big, mean, and vicious!  If I had seen the book in a store, I would have picked it up based on the cover alone!

This book is one of those rare ones written by a new author that deserves a higher than a five-star rating.  Therefore, Katie Berry is being awarded the AudioBookReviewer’s Choice Award.

Compelled

by Inge-Lise Goss

Narrated by Jule Nelson-Duac

Supernaturally Driven Investigation!

Sidney Langston is a New York Detective who is experiencing some supernatural incidents that drive her to solve a murder mystery for her own peace of mind and to remain pain-free from a “sympathy” bullet wound.  Set to discover the true murderer, Sidney hopes to help the dead rest and free an innocent man.

Compelled is a great listen.  Compelled is written in such a way that you get all of the details and still stay engaged.  The author does a great job making Sydney a down-to-earth character that still is the hero.  There are twists and turns throughout the story and when you think you have it figured out, we get even more details.  The ending of Compelled left me satisfied with the story.

The author, Inge-Lise does a masterful job of creating an interesting and intriguing storyline and develops the characters vividly.  She keeps her listener’s attention and imagination moving!

Jule Nelson-Duac provided the narration and did so wonderfully. She gave each character a different voice and was easy to listen to. Her cadence was measured and added to the storytelling.

DANGEROUS GAMES
The Peacemaker, Book 2

by Blair Howard
Narrated by: Tom Lennon

Production by: Blair Howard

Action Packed with Spies, Assassins, and Evil!

This is what happens when you play with fire and kidnap the wrong family! The Peacemaker provokes Casey Wu after she fails to complete her assignment as an assassin for hire. Add in Nero, a deadly special forces sniper for the British government and ex-mercenary and you have an action-packed, deadly game of cat and mouse. Bent on getting a pardon from the Queen, Nero joins forces to help rescue Wu’s niece and defeat once in for all the vile and vicious Peacemaker. The only question is, can Nero and Casey focus on the job and let sleeping dogs lie?

Blair Howard, the author creates a vivid and rich world of spies, assassins, and evil men. I have not listened to the first book in the series but the was able to follow the second one easily. The plot twists were magnificent and well delivered. The dialog flowed smoothly between the characters and was realistic. I had a hard time putting the book down!

The narrator, Tom Lennon rocked! I was hooked when he spoke the words “and shot him in the face.” The way he lowered his voice at the word ‘face’ was so low you had to strain to hear it. While you knew it was going to happen and when it did it was still a shock! He knows how to work the narration in a way that continues to capture and hold the listener's attention. I cannot envision anyone else doing this book in such an entertaining and authentic manner.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys spy novels, this has everything.

Dark Passenger

by Donald Allen Kirch
Narrated by: Hollie Jackson

What Does the Titanic and a Mummy Have in Common?

What do the Titanic and a 3,000-year-old mummy have in common?  Lots of people are going to die!  Transporting his newest find back to the US, Prof. Dennis Parker risks his life and the lives of others to bring this cursed mummy on board while also being hunted down by an egotistical and maniacal Egyptian official.  Add in the insistence of the shipbuilder that the Titanic sail on even when there are obvious issues, you have the making of a historically accurate story mixed with some very creative threads running through to add even more suspense, horror, and awe!

I am constantly amazed at how the author, Donald Allen Kirch, can keep listeners on the edge of their chairs!  The historical fact intermingled with creative fiction and another storyline (the mummy) is highly entertaining and suspenseful.  Kirch is methodical in writing the storylines and keeping the threads clear while also blending them perfectly!  Kirch builds each character carefully and fully fitting them perfectly into the plot.  There is nothing lacking or weak in Kirch’s writings – the various plot threads and characters are strong and complete.  When the ship sank, I truly felt like I was seeing the events in person because Kirch is so detailed and vivid in descriptions.

The narrator, Hollie Jackson did a wonderful job giving the characters unique voices that allowed the listener to keep things straight.  I think that Jackson’s performance added to the story perfectly.  The measured rhythm, emotion, and clarity of speech were exact and kept the story moving forward.

I have to say there is not a book yet, that Kirch has written that I have not enjoyed – each story is unique and horrifying in its own way.  I cannot wait for another of Donald Allen Kirch’s books!

DAUGHTERS OF NYX
A Novel of Ancient Athens

by Diane Bonavist
Narrated by: DJ Holte

Production by: Diane Bonavist

Fate!

As humans, we believe we make our own fate, but the Daughters of Nyx were fickle and wove the fate of mankind to their own whims. Set in Greece in 428 BCE, Timarcus and Kore discovered just how fickle the Daughters could be when Kore was ripped away yet once again from Timarcus. Determined to find and bring her killer to justice, Timarcus learns just how little control he has over his life and destiny.

The author, Diane Bonavist, writes descriptively allowing her listeners to visualize the characters and Ancient Greece vividly. Bonavist knows how to draw out the listener's imagination and does so. Her characters are well developed in a slow and deliberate style.

The narrator, DJ Holte provides an easy listening voice giving the right amount of inflection and passion in his tone. The listeners can hear the frustration, passion, and sense of loss in the voice of Timarcus. Holte has a smooth cadence as well and speaks clearly.

This is a rich book of fiction carefully woven with history and beliefs. Not a long audiobook but one you will want to hear in one sitting.

DEAD ACRE

by Rhett C. Bruno, Jaime Castle
Narrated by: Roger Clark

Production by: Audible Originals

Western Horror Hybrid Delight!

Dead Acre was written by Rhett C. Bruno and Jaime Castle. A western horror hybrid of how a lone wolf gunslinger who is an instrument of Heaven wanders into Dead Acre to slay monsters and fight the demons of hell. These two authors seamlessly weave together the main storyline, while filling us in on our protagonist and adding a subtle subplot. Definitely a fast pace, no-nonsense read/listen. Great for either a western fan or horror enthusiast.

Narration for the audiobook was performed by Roger Clark. Clark did a fantastic job and provided depth to the tale. He did this by performing unique voices for the cast of characters and delivering it consistently.

Editing, quality, and production were on par with most books I have listened to. It was clear, no issue with sound or quality.

DEATH IN THE CONGO
Assassin Series, Book 5

by David Nees
Narrated by: Jonathan Beville

Production by: David Nees

Review by T.C. White

Death - Good VS Evil Style!

It’s Good VS Evil in this non-stop, action-packed book, and Dan is here to save the day.  Death in the Congo is full of action, espionage, twist and turns, and a bit of romance.  While it started off a tad bit slow, I was hooked pretty quickly.  David Nees really hits home with his descriptions throughout. He weaves a thorough story leaving the listener a bit breathless.

Jonathan Beville narrates this book fantastically.  There are many characters, and he lends a different voice to each.  It really felt like a movie more than a book.  Great Job!

If you enjoy espionage, twists, action, and a little affair of the heart, this is the book for you.

DOCTOR MOSQUITO

by Richard C. Dellinger
Narrated by: Doug Sanders

Production by: White Acorn Press

Review by W. D. Douglass

Unique Glimpse into the Future!

Doctor Mosquito was written by Richard C. Dellinger and narrated by Doug Sanders. The book’s summary says that this is the author’s debut novel. This might make a listener wary. But have no fear this is an amazing listen. From exciting action to great character development and a couple of plot twists you won't see coming, this book delivers.

This book provides a new and unique glimpse into our future with genetics, medical breakthroughs, and cures. This is definitely a book everyone would enjoy.

Doug Sanders did a spectacular job narrating this audiobook. He brought this well-written book to life. Consistent cadence, unique character voices, conveying emotions, you name it he nailed it.

DREAM STALKER

by Nancy Gardner
Narrated by: Karen Krause

Production by: Nancy Gardner

Where Dreams Become Deadly!

Lilly Scott is gifted with the ability to dream walk into and around other people’s dreams.  Her first foray into dreams almost ended in disaster.  Much to her sister’s disappointment, who happens to be a nun running a home for young women, Lily finds herself forced into dream walking again.  Now to save her daughter and find the actual murderer killing innocents, Lilly must walk.  Having the ability to enter people’s dreams is not all fun and games, especially when Lilly once again encounters the lethally dangerous Dream Stalker.  Now she must walk a fine line and keep herself and her daughter safe while putting the actual killer behind bars.

Nancy Gardner, the author, provides small details that help keep the story flowing and the listeners clear on what is going on.  Each character’s role is important to the story and is developed accordingly as the story evolves.  The storyline and plot twists are creative and keep the listener listening.

The narrator, Karen Krause performs the audiobook professionally and smoothly.  Her voices are rich and spirited.  The flow of the story is smooth and intense where appropriate.  I enjoyed her performance and hope to hear more from her.

This is an interesting book that will keep you entertained and riveted as the author and narrator do a great job of transporting the listener into the story.

Dreaming Wide Awake
August Chase, The Sleeping Detective, Book 2

by Charles R. Hinckley
Narrated by: Brett M. Boles

Production by: Charles R. Hinckley

Gifted Private Investigator!

Being a private detective sometimes involves special gifts.  August Chase is one of those rare P.I.’s that have the gift to solve his cases by entering a dream state and seeing events as they unfold and before they occur.  As a result of his abilities, he finds himself embroiled in a conspiracy theory, a serial killer, and a determined stalker!

Charles R. Hinckley, the author delivers a fresh mystery with a dose of supernatural and a sidekick!  A carefully constructed narrative with a satisfying ending.  The dialog is realistic, smooth, and moves the story forward.  Each character is well developed and interesting. I enjoyed exploring the “Dream World” and listening to it unfold.

The narrator, Brett M. Boles provides an enjoyable performance.  His voices are unique to each character and have attributes that bring each character into the story in a rich manner. His delivery was smooth and clean.  He projected the appropriate amount of emotion and character traits for each situation.

I look forward to more books by Hinckley and more performances by Boles!

EAR WAX MAX SERIES:

QUARANTINED

by Alisdair Baird

Hilarious Fun!

A hilarious, realistic, and yet sobering tale of the impact school-age children are facing being quarantined during the middle of their school year, for who knows how long.  This tale is told from the viewpoint of Max, a.k.a. Ear Wax Max, and describes his confusion, his excitement, and his sense of loss.  Confined at home and learning online, we are given an insider view of what the parents and students are facing with this new life.  Vividly described in hilarious terms, we see the results of the confrontation between mom and little sister and witness first-hand our inability as parents to take on one more task.

The author, Alisdair Baird is a gifted storyteller who vividly and richly put to words what most parents forced into this situation feel and react.  Further, he describes how bewildering and lonely this situation is for Max and his friend, Sam.  The undercurrent of pain is there, subtle but still there – life as they know it is over, something new is happening and they don’t understand it.

Baird fully realistically develops the characters, provides authentic (and often heard at my home) conversations, and has nice plot twists that are simple yet poignant.

The narrator, Andrew James Roberts gives an excellent performance.  He gives each character a unique voice that helps define who they are and does it smoothly and flawlessly.  He speaks clearly and with a nice rhythm.

Several times I thought I would wet my pants, especially when I read about Max’s mom and his sister’s interaction in the kitchen … that could so be me!  This is a wonderful book that everyone should hear!

CAMP WEDGIEHAHA

by Alisdair Baird
Narrated by: Andrew Roberts

Summer Camp High Jinks!

Like all middle school-age students, Max sees the summer as FREEDOM - what should be a sleep late, be lazy time where one can hang with friends and do nothing.  Then his parents send him off to camp.  A camp where his nemesis Bart “the Fart” is going and just to make sure his summer is going to be miserable, his bed is right next to the bathroom door where his unending jokes about … well, you can imagine are fueled.

This is a hilarious tale of summer camp as seen through the eyes of Max.  The fun is never-ending!  The author, Alisdair Baird, captures the feelings of the students and camp staff as he richly weaves the tale of Max.  Baird provides rich detail bringing the story to life and bringing memories of past experiences to the forefront.

Andrew Roberts is the narrator who performs this delightful book.  His inflection is perfect for the characters as well as the ease with which the words roll off his tongue.  His performance is realistic and genuine.  His performance is steady and consistent.

This is a light listen that will have you in stitches!

BACK TO SCHOOL

by Alisdair Baird
Narrated by: Andrew Roberts

Publisher: Philip Angus

Heigh-Ho … Heigh-Ho … It’s Off to School We Go!

Maxwell (aka Ear Wax Max) can’t catch a break.  Summer is over and it’s off to school he must go.  His first hurdle of the day is crawling out of bed and making it to school on time.  Then there is the learning he has to do, bypass the school bully and survive the questionable, unrecognizable lunch!  I am sure you remember mysterious meat Monday!  Max helps us remember what those days in school were really like with a twist of humor.

I enjoy this series as the author, Alisdair Baird gives us reminders of our days long past gone and the friends we had in school.  As the main character, Max is fun, honest, and realistic.  I love how Baird takes an ordinary boy and puts him through the wringer so to speak.  This is a well-written book with the plot simple but poignant.

The narrator, Andrew Roberts, is delightful to hear and he is the perfect Max!  He gives a unique voice to each character that reflects their personality.  He speaks clearly and with enthusiasm that moves the story along.

I thoroughly enjoy this series and cannot wait for the next.  Light, fun, and interesting!

SLIME TIME

by Alisdair Baird
Narrated by: Andrew James Roberts

Production by: Alisdair Baird

Loads and Loads of Fun!

Max’s special day is here!  It’s Halloween and he is ready to make the most of it.  Donning his Mr. Amazing costume, he struts off to Middle School ready to take the world by storm.  Max and his best friend (also dressed as Mr. Amazing but a ‘mirror version’) deal with the bullies and smart-aleks who keep tugging their capes and making fun of them.  Making it through the day is only made better by the ultimate activity – trick or treating … until his parents spring the news on him!

Alisdair Baird, the author, captures the feelings and experiences of each kid during this special day and relays it in a smooth, accurate manner that allows the listener to flashback to those times.  Although the audiobook is very short, it is a delight to hear!

The narrator, Andrew James Roberts, once again dons Max and gives an excellent performance.  Roberts takes each character and brings them to life through his talented voice and proper inflections of emotion.

Baird tells the story of Max and Sam in a smooth, fluent manner rich with details and imagery.  Although the book is targeted at young adults, they are a pleasure to hear for listeners of all ages.

ALL WRAPPED UP

by Alisdair Baird
Narrated by: Andrew James Roberts

Production by: Philip Angus

YIKES!! Winter Dance Time!

The Winter Holiday is coming up and while Max is looking forward to the break, there is a slight hiccup. You see, Max has learned there will be a Dance the last evening before the break; a dance where the girl asks the boy out. Max was not concerned about being asked until he was then things got a little messy for him. Max is thrust into the dating life! Now all the rules have changed, and he doesn’t have a map or a playbook!

The author, Alisdair Baird, once again captures and relays very accurately the ups and downs of middle school dating and what that entails. Specifically, Baird communicates the feelings Max is experiencing very well including being taught to dance by his mother to writing poetry (under duress). This book is particularly interesting not only for teenagers/middle schoolers but young adults of all ages. It is a fun series complete with memorable characters and plot twists that will leave the listener in tears from laughter.

The narrator, Andrew James Roberts, is Max! He slips into the character smoothly and maintains him throughout the book. Baird picked the perfect narrator as he is clear speaking, assumes the characters, and has a solid pace of delivery. I honestly don’t know how he keeps from laughing during some of Max’s antics!

I highly recommend this book and the entire series. It is entertaining, nostalgic in some parts, and downright fun.

BEACH WARS

by Alisdair Baird
Narrated by: Andrew James Roberts

Production by: Philip Angus

Spring Break!

It is Spring Break and Max is excited!!! However, the Spring break choices for Max are a bit disappointing at first when his parents veto his desire to attend the Comic Con. Fortunately, the petting zoo didn’t win either so off to the beach home of their aunt they go. Max gets buried up to his neck, gets into a one-sided altercation with a crab, and has a major sunburn. The upside to the break is he learns to surf, there’s no Bart Johnson around, makes some new friends, and he helps his older sister get a new haircut …

Alisdair Baird, the author, has created a wonderful series featuring Max. This is one of their rare books that makes listening to audiobooks fun and relaxing … well, until Max does something, and you have to let out that belly laugh! Baird’s writing is concise and rich with vivid details that give the listener solid insight into the mind of Max. Each character is fully developed and suits the situation at hand. I love the aunt who never suspected her way of life would be shaken slightly.

The narrator, Andrew James Roberts, gives another excellent performance. He sounds just like I think Max and his family and friends would sound. He projects just the perfect amount of awe, mischievousness, and other preteen angst.

Baird and Roberts together, have breathed life into Max and his story to the point that hilarity is a sure thing and the longing of a time passed has come calling. Yes, this is a young adult book but trust me when I say young adults of ALL AGES will love Max! Don’t miss this book or the series! I will say there is one major flaw – each book and the series itself are just not long enough! I want more!

EIDOLON AVENUE: THE SECOND FEAST
Eidolon Avenue, Book 2

by Jonathan Winn
Narrated by: Kristina Rothe

Production by: Fireside Horror

Utterly Horrifying!

Warning!!  This is truly a terrifying book. This is a second book in the series of horror stories surrounding an apartment building on Eidolon Avenue. Each apartment on each floor has a tale. Each resident is guilty of something and is haunted by their choices. A woman who recreates herself, a man delusional about a relationship, a woman losing faith, a pedophile, and an all but invisible college student wanting more. Each story is unique and equally terrifying. Each decision a resident makes comes to play out in the most horrible and terrifying manner. Each resident remembers what decision brought their pain and ultimate destruction. Each resident must pay with their blood and fear. There is no escape for anyone here.

The author, Jonathan Winn has a wicked imagination! He takes a building and tells the story of each resident on the 2nd floor in vivid detail building the suspense and ultimate horror. I have to say the first story took me quite by surprise and although I knew what to expect moving forward, Winn still sent shivers through my spine. His stories were strong, yet short. They were packed with plot twists and moments guaranteed to stay with you well after the audiobook ends. Characters were well defined and dialog was also well done.

The narrator, Kristina Rothe gives a genuine performance bringing each of the horrors to life. Rothe uses her talented voice to give the listener subtle clues as to what to expect but not enough to take away from the jarring tale’s climax. I enjoyed her performance!

I look forward to more stories by Winn – a writer with a truly scary imagination!

Emergence

by Shira Shiloah
Narrated by: Simone McIntyre

Production by: Shira Shiloah

Titillating Medical Thriller!

This is a riveting story.  They say “do no harm” but Dr. D.K. Webb, a neurosurgeon missed the memo!  After several “errors” and complaints about his job performance or rather lack of … Dr. Roxanne Roth, Anesthesiologist takes action.  Recovering from the loss of her fiancé, Roth is determined to lose herself in her work.  That is until one of her patients suffers a deadly setback.  Now more determined than ever, she is seeking justice!

The author, Shira Shiloah knows how to write a medical thriller given her past profession!  This is one of those rare books that not only lures the listener in but keeps them focused until the last word is spoken.  The storyline flows well, and the twists are executed smoothly and with finesse.  Each character is well developed and realistic.  Her medical terminology and knowledge are clear in her storyline.

The narrator, Simone McIntyre, gives a strong performance.  Her voice for Dr. Roth is strong and poised.  Each character has a unique tone, strength, or lightness that distinguishes them from others.  She speaks clearly and a freshness that captures the listener’s attention.

This was a solid thriller that leaves the listener wanting to hear more by Shiloah.  I enjoyed this book.

EMPIRE PALADIN
Realm of the Dead Empire Paladin Series
Book 1

by M.S. Valdez
Narrated by: Josh Innerst

Production by: M. S. Valdez

Demons, Paladins, and Zombies!

Camila, the devout Paladin, and soldier of God is fighting for the survival of all that is good and for her soul. Set in 1241 A.D. Camila and the other Paladins charged with protecting the local citizens find themselves struggling with their faith. Camila finds herself having to face a powerful Paladin who has turned his back on God and turned to Satan in revenge. Faced with the Walking Dead, the evil Paladin, Satan, and now discovering her inner demon … the fun has just begun.

This is an action-packed fantasy adventure complete with intrigue, battles, and zombies! The author, M.S. Valdez has woven a dark tale rich with details and characters. Each situation is handled clearly and with an appropriate narrative. Valdez provides a solid storyline with unexpected plot twists. Further, he grows each character with depth, even the side characters are developed accordingly. Valdez has unquestionably written an “edge of your seat, nail-biting” book. It has something for everyone – a bit of romance, a bit of religion, a lot of action, and a lot of zombies!

The narrator, Josh Innerst clearly adds to the book. His voice is unique, his energy fits the storyline, and his cadence moves the book forward at a steady pace. In my opinion, Innerst was the perfect voice actor for this audiobook.

Ever Alice

by H. J. Ramsey
Narrated by: Caroline Holmes

Alice with a Twist!

The author, H.J. Ramsey provides a telling of Alice and Wonderland after the initial story.  Told from the Queens and Alice’s perspectives, this is a unique and poignant book.  Having returned from the magical place of Wonderland, Alice talked about it so often that her parents and sister not only worried about her but became embarrassed – they assumed she had a mental illness.  As is so often the case, Alice was committed to an asylum.  Desperate to leave and rejoin her family, Alice was prepared to do anything including an experimental procedure.

Not only is Alice in trouble but so is Wonderland, the Queen of Hearts is out of control and residents are plotting her demise.  Alice must return to Wonderland to help save Wonderland.  The characters are rich and aptly developed, there is room for more but given the true focus is on the Queen and Alice, I think the development was fine.  We truly do get a clear glimpse of Alice and the Queen, especially at the end.

I was not prepared for the ending, the twist took my breath away, but was perfect!  Totally unexpected.  Although I have just finished the book a couple of hours ago, I find myself still reflecting on it and see that it will stick with me long afterward.

The narrator, Caroline Holmes does a steady and delightful performance.  Each character has a unique voice that portrays their personality.  I thought her performances of Alice and the Queen were outstanding.  Her cadence for each voice was spot on for each character and was rich, lilting her voice accordingly for each.

FAOII CHRONICLES

FAOII BETRAYER
Book 2

by Tahani Nelson

The Faoii Betrayer Returns!

Tahani Nelson, the author of the Faoii series, has taken the second book in this series in a totally different direction while maintaining some connections with the first book. Kai, the betrayer appears in this book, but it is a world that is different from all that she knew before. Nelson has taken a well-built world and turned it upside down in innovative and creative ways to create this second book of the series. Ilahna and her brother are the main characters who are determined to bring back the Faoii ways and shut down the ruling hierarchy.

While I enjoyed the first book, the second one is just as intriguing and different as the first. Building on the previous book, this one takes some drastic twists that are guaranteed to keep the listener on the edge of their chair. Nelson takes her time building each character with depth thus producing some very deep and strong female leads. The powers that Ilahna and her brother manifest throughout the book are unique and interesting adding to the suspense of the story.

The narrator, Sara Morsey, is perfect for the story. Her performance adds to the intrigue of the story as she projects the appropriate voice and tone for each character and incident. Morsey moves the story along at a steady pace as she seems to assume each role seamlessly and powerfully. Morsey skillfully brings the story and characters to life.

I look forward to the next book in this series to see where the mind and creativity of Tahani Nelson lead her audience.

FAOII ASCENDED
Book 3

by Tahani Nelson
Narrated by: Sara Morsey

Production by: Tahani Nelson

Destiny can be a Curse!

Ehryn, a young woman gifted with magical abilities is charged with a mission, a journey to decipher what the old gods want and to carry their will out as destiny dictates. Ehryn is accompanied by several village members including the only daughter of the queen, a storyteller, and a Faoii. Together they must take this deadly journey but for anyone to survive, Ehryn must draw upon all her power, faith, and beliefs to remain true to herself and save the world. Life’s tapestry is changing, and that change could be devastating if Ehryn fails in her mission.

Tahani Nelson, the author has created a world unlike any other. Blending myth with her creativity reveals a world where one’s destiny is guided by the tapestry of life and its threads constantly shifting and changing. Nelson’s ability to paint vivid imagery further enhances the story. Each character is well-developed and endearing, including the warrior princess who begins as a spoiled entitled brat. To me, Kont was the character that received the greatest reaction from me. Nelson has a skill that brings the listener deeply into the story connecting characters to the listener. The dialogue was genuine and kept the story moving forward.

The narrator, Sara Morsey, as usual, gives a solid performance that keeps the listener on the edge of their seat. Each character reflected the personality, belief, and strength of each character consistently. Her voice was smooth, and the words flowed evenly.

This book is highly recommended. I had the pleasure of reviewing the previous two books which builds the foundation of the Faoii but this book can be heard as a standalone. Trust me though, this series will have you hooked.

This book has been awarded the highly prestigious Audiobook Reviewer’s Choice Award as it is believed to deserve a higher rating than the standard 5-star rating.

FATAL INFRACTION
Mike Stoneman, Thriller, Book 4

by Kevin G. Chapman
Narrated by: Kevin G. Chapman

Production by: First Legacy Studios

A Mysterious Murder in the NFL!

Professional Quarterback, Jimmy Rydell was a highly controversial player; he pushed the limits of everyone. Having made the headlines for kneeling during the National Anthem, Rydell turns up not only dead but frozen and naked! Now it is up to NYC detectives Stoneman and Dickson to solve the murder. It just happens to be a murder no one wants to be solved – they would rather forget Rydell and move on. Stoneman and Dickson find themselves knee-deep in secrets and the politics of the NFL while trying to figure out this puzzling murder.

This was an interesting listen. The author, Kevin Chapman does a good job of building the mystery and carrying it through to the end without losing focus or the listener's attention. He builds a solid whodunit with interesting twists. Each character was developed, although most had personalities that didn’t require a lot of depth, especially Rydell.

The narrator, Kevin Chapman did a good job of narration and giving voice to each character. It was easy to follow along as each character had a distinct voice. He spoke clearly and with enough conviction to keep the listener's attention.

A good mystery with a solid plot and characters that keep the listener on the edge of their chair.

FIRST WORLD FLIGHT
The Odyssey of Billy Mitchell

by Spencer Lane

The Riveting Story of U.S. Aviation!

First World Flight is a historical audiobook focusing on the growth of US aviation beginning in 1924, and the four airmen and General Billy Mitchell who were responsible for saving the US aviation program through their patriotism, creativity, and dedication. Not being a historian or familiar with the history of aviation, I found it interesting and exciting.

I found the book to be interesting, although it was long. This is perfect for someone with a passion for aviation, military, politics, or history. The personal touches – the information about the families that is not well known was interesting as well. Before the end of the book, I felt I almost knew Billy Mitchell personally. His passion was successfully portrayed and communicated through Spencer Lane’s writing.

Spencer Lane is a detailed and careful storyteller.  He creatively wove the story of Billy Mitchell into a delightful story of one man’s passion.  The dialog was realistic. Lane is a gifted storyteller.

I thought the narrator, Dave Wright, performed the book beautifully. His voice was smooth, gentle yet passionate. Wright spoke clearly and with the right amount of inflection behind his words. I could listen to Wright for hours!

This historical novel required vast amounts of research which Lane did well!  It is often hard to take a historical figure and creatively weave an engaging and interesting story, but Lane was very highly successful at it!

FITZDUNCAN SERIES
FitzDuncan

by John Spearman
Narrated by: Wolfgang Milliken

Production by: John J. Spearman

No Good Deed Goes Unpunished!

Casimir FitzDuncan is a man handy with a sword and by some people’s standards undesirable because of his birthright.

A young woman contacts FitzDuncan seeking to extradite herself from a marriage contract then mysteriously disappears. At the same time, Freddy (a long-time friend) asks FitzDuncan to help him recover a family heirloom ring he lost gambling. FitzDuncan provides the requested assistance but soon finds himself in the center of an abduction, plans to murder Prince Albert, and more! Both FitzDuncan and Freddy must work together to solve the mysteries together.

The author, John J Spearman, does a thorough job of setting the stage and character development.  He is methodical in his building the story and each character; his execution of each plot twist leaves the listener surprised.  Spearman reflects the proprietary of the period regarding romance, chivalry, and societal attitudes.

The narrator, Wolfgang Milliken, adds to the personalities of each character by giving each a unique voice.  His performance is steady and clear.  He communicates the mystery, suspense, romance, and evilness well.

I look forward to reading more by Spearman and hearing more of Milliken!

FITZDUNCAN’S ALCHEMY
Book 2

by John Spearman
Narrated by: Ruel Fulford

Production by: John J. Spearman

The Great Takedown!

Casimir FitzDuncan is facing lots of changes in his life both at work and personally. In this second edition, Caz is hired to find and take down a charlatan who plays very rough! His reputation is growing more favorable amongst those he would like to socialize with. His friends and girlfriend are instrumental in this mystery and the great takedown.

John J. Spearman has created yet again another adventure and mystery for Casimir FitzDuncan that is both entertaining and engaging. With each new book, the listener witnesses the kindness and gentlemanly ways of Caz. Spearman methodically creates a situation and then throws in a plot twist that is well-done and unexpected. His attention to detail is communicated through his rich and vivid descriptions.

The narrator, Ruel Fulford once again gives a wonderful performance. He dons each character and gives a realistic performance. He speaks clearly and with an appropriate emotion to reflect the situation and personality of the character. He is smooth in his deliverance as is his cadence. I enjoy listening to him.

This is a great series. Each book is written ion a clear and interesting style. It’s one of those "hard to put down" books.

For Her Bones: Dark Tales

by Alec Reid

Creative and Current Horror!

Extremely creative stories that reflect current times; who would have thought the world today could be this terrifying?  These stories definitely do not reflect the standard or vintage stories that we’re used to hearing.  Instead, this is a collection of unique and original horror stories.  Each one a bit spookier than the next.  Twists and turns throughout that keep you engaged and guessing until the end.  The last story seemed to drag a bit, but overall, the author did a good job with this.  I enjoyed the descriptions used by the author to set the stage for each story.  Great job painting each story with words.

The author, Alec Reid, definitely did a great job with dialog and presenting rich and realistic details.  Each story flowed well and the plot for each story moved at a good steady pace with the plot twists expertly executed.

There were multiple individuals narrating the tales in this audiobook.  The narration is done well, and each person narrating does a great job reading.  I am not personally a fan of the audio effects as it tends to take away from the narrator, and at times, drowned out the narrator.  It may have been better had I not been using headphones.

Overall, this was an interesting book that I would recommend to anyone who enjoys horror.  I look forward to hearing more written by Alec Reid.

FRANCIS LAURENT

by Schuyler Randall
Narrated by: Ann Bumbak

Production by: Randy N. Moon

Justice, Punishment, and More!

Francis Laurent is an intense, faithful man who has a knack for justice. During Prohibition, Laurent is faced with solving the murder of his best friend, August Day, and three armor truck officers. Justice will prevail and will come at the hands of Laurent in a creative manner fitting to the crime, you will be hooked! Told through the eyes of his estranged daughter, Raina you will be kept on the edge of your chair.

The author, Schuyler Randall, has done an excellent job of creating a story using the themes of justice, revenge, and punishment. While also creating characters that are not only authentic but ones that elicit a response from the listener. You will come to dislike most of the folks and will smile when payback happens. Highly creative and well-written! One cannot sit back without having a response, it will happen! Laurent and his daughter, Raina are well developed. The other characters are developed just enough for the story. After all, this is the story of Francis Laurent and no one else!

Ann Bumbak was the narrator. Bumbak’s narration was very good; she was effective at character differentiation. I had not heard her works before but she did an excellent job of keeping my attention throughout the book. I’m not sure there is anything I would say she could improve on, I thought this was a good performance – she spoke clearly, smoothly, and distinctively.

For me, the characters were predictable to a degree. The story is predictable in the sense the characters were stereotypical for that time. While some may see it as a downside, I see it as authentic and more realistic! That was pivotal to my liking the book so much!

And yes, it is violent! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and hope to hear more by Randall and performances by Bumbak!

FRIEND OF THE DEVIL

by Mark Spivak
Narrated by: Geoff Sturtevant

Production by: Sunshine Wine Concepts LLC

The Devil is in the Details!

Perhaps in a deal with the devil, Chef Joseph Soderini di Avenzano is a distinguished chef known for his prowess in the kitchen with food and his ex-wives. Although little is truly known about Avenzano, journalist David Fox seeks out the renowned Chef to interview him and winds up being hired to write his biography. This book has one deadly recipe:  toss in a beautiful woman with a hidden agenda, cocaine, murder, lots of ex-wives, mafia, FBI and mix well. With this recipe, Fox must determine what is real and what is not before he finds himself on the wrong side of the grass!

This was an interesting story that also touches on the devil, soured relationships, money, and fame. The author, Mark Spivak does an excellent job at weaving a story and blending in several subplots in a manner that is easy to follow. There was a lot of speculation between Fox and the female lead about the Chef’s intent. The speculation seemed intense and dominated the book.

The narrator, Geoff Sturtevant gave a good performance that kept the book moving forward. His multiple voices fit each character well. Sturtevant is skilled with enunciation and an easy-to-follow cadence.

The storyline makes for an interesting thriller. I would like to hear more from Mark Spivak.

GALLANTRY IN ACTION

by John Spearman
Narrated by: Tyler Krzeszewski

Production by: John J. Spearman

Action, Adventure, and Danger!

The beginning of Gallantry in Action is like Star Trek, Next Generation, and other sci-fi series complete with Hyperspace, battles, new officers that cause some deadly situations, etc. Like all series, the first book is mainly setting up the premise of the series with some action, relationships, and character building. Captain Halberd, Royal Navy of the Interplanetary Commonwealth has a rough start but grows into a strong character that takes the stage.

The author, John Spearman, takes his time building the world, characters, and relationships. His descriptions are rich and consistent. Spearman’s writing is smooth and detailed allowing the listener to understand each world/situation he is building. I have found that some authors rely on their listeners innately understanding most of what is going on and not giving them the full background. The world-building and plot twists are well done and smoothly executed.

The narrator, Tyler Krzeszewski gives a good performance. His performance is smoothly delivered, and clearly pronounced, and his cadence is steady. This is my first time listening to Krzeszewski and I hope to hear more.

This is an enjoyable book, with the promise of new battles, conspiracies, and new characters as we move through the series. I am looking forward to the next in the series.

HEROES OF TIME LEGENDS:
MURDOCH’S CHOICE

by Wayne D. Kramer
Narrated by: Ed Romanoff

Production by: Twin Flames Studios

Epic Sea Captain Adventure!

Zale “the Gale” Murdoch is an infamous sea captain and member of a guild. Murdoch is seeking the one item that will move from being a member of the guild to the grandmaster. However, to achieve that status he must first obtain the Grimstone and beat his rival. The Grimstone is a mythical object whose value is priceless! Of course, there are milestones and obstacles that get in the way – his daughter, her true love, superstitions, a despicable rival, and the darkest magic ever. The fun is just starting!

The author, Wayne D. Kramer provides an epic adventure that has poignant lessons to be learned. Weaving a magical story and world-building takes a creative mind and a masterful storyteller. With each plot twist and mystery, Kramer captures the listener’s attention and holds it hostage! Characters are well-developed, the dialog is clever and polished, and the action is gripping. This is geared toward young adults, but all listeners will find themselves enjoying the story.

The narrator, Ed Romanoff provides a titillating performance that does the story justice. His unique voices reflect each character’s personality and add to an already exciting adventure.

This is an enjoyable adventure with some hilarious, tongue-in-cheek, and exciting moments. A rich adventure!

HURRICANE

by Glenda Norwood Petz
Narrated by: Lorin McCraley

Production by: Glenda Norwood Petz

Faster than a Cheetah and More Deadly!

Kayla and her children are vacationing on the southeast coast of Florida while her husband prepares their home for an impending category 5 hurricane.  Of course, there is more to this story – lots more!! A murder, adultery, and a levy that is bound to break if Hurricane Phillipe stays on course.  People who remain at the resort, ignoring calls to leave are faced with certain death.  All this adds up to an exciting, edge-of-your-seat book as the author, Glenda Norwood Petz weaves a careful, well-thought-out story that demonstrates chaos comes in many forms.

Petz weaves realistic characters, situations, and dialog into her story which moves forward at a quick steady pace.  A dynamic story where the listener cheers for the death of some characters and tears roll for others.  Unable to catch her breath, Kayla moves from one bad situation into another rolling with each punch life has dealt her.

The narrator, Lorin McCraley gives an excellent performance moving the story along with realistic emotions and more.  She speaks clearly and keeps the story moving at a steady yet at times communicating the seriousness of the situation through the cadence and tone of her voice.  I have not had the pleasure of hearing Ms. McCraley before but look forward to hearing more.

This is an exciting and well-executed suspense story where character connections are strong and evolve naturally within the book giving the listener a thrill a minute.  You cannot help but become drawn into this story.

ICE TRILOGY

ICE
Book 1

by Kevin Tinto

Out of this World Mystery!

Leah Andrews is a renowned Archaeologist on a mission to discover the mystery of a tribe of Native American Indians that lived in a cliff dwelling in the southwestern area of New Mexico which just happens to be on government property.  What she discovers there requires her to reach out to her estranged husband, Jack Hobson.  His connections and expertise of the Antarctic territory are exactly what Leah needs to solve the mystery.  Hobson brings in experts and finds a financer which adds another twist to their mission – recovering an antique plane on Russian-claimed territory!  Each word keeps the listener on the edge of their seat!

Kevin Tinto, the author, builds the story slowly but powerfully starting with the deadly climb up and down Mount Everest and ending with the team making a discovery that is out of this world!  Each step of this book is well-written and realistic especially the “governmental red tape” and politics in the storyline.  Tinto is methodical as he moves Leah and her team through every step of their exploration and discovery.

Tinto takes time to build each character and ties them to the storyline perfectly.  One cannot help but root for Leah and Jack. Ice is vividly written, with strong characters, and the listener cannot help but be disappointed when they hear the “we hope you have enjoyed this audible production”.  I look forward to the next book in this trilogy!

Pamela Almand, the narrator, provides an excellent performance.  Almand moves the story along with the right amount of emotion and enthusiasm.  Her cadence is smooth and easy to listen to.  I found Almand gave each character the right tone which reflected each character's personality.  Almand immersed not only herself into the story but she brought the listener in as well.  This is the first time I heard Pamela Almand perform and I loved it!

ICE Genesis!
Book 2

by Kevin Tinto
Narrated by: Pamela Almand

An Intense Thriller with Americans, Russians, and Nuclear Devices!

Jack Hobson, Dr. Leah Andrews, and others from the first ICE book survive the President’s attempt to eliminate them via a nuclear device.  In their escape, Jack and Leah take their recently discovered ancients back to their original home.  To keep everyone safe, Jack and Leah have hidden a nuclear device in New Mexico and Jack Paulson is neck-deep in politics to keep everyone safe.  The Lakota Shaman, Appanoose, has an agenda on his mind and it takes everything Leah has to figure it out and make the right decision.  Meanwhile, the Russians and Americans are on the verge of war and the Navy Seal survivors are trying to continue surviving.

The author, Kevin Tinto, gives his listeners a thrill a minute with this second book in the trilogy series.   There is continuity with the characters he developed in book one that continued over to book two.  Again, the dialog is solid and realistic.  The political games being played are told convincingly and with an authentic feel to them.  Tinto knows how to engage his listeners and keep them listening!  I do have to say, the ending brought tears to my eyes.

The narrator, Pamela Almand is excellent!  She slips on each character as if they were a part of her, she gives each one a unique yet solid voice.  This was a book that I was surprised she did so well; she had to pronounce words from three different languages - Lakota, Russian, and one other.  She did an excellent job of pronouncing them and still maintaining the cadence of her performance.  Between Tinto’s superb writing skills and Pamela Almand’s outstanding performance, this is a book to hear!

I cannot wait for the third book!

ICE REVELATION
Book 3

by Kevin Tinto
Narrated by: Pamela Almand

Politics, Extraterrestrials, Russians, and More!!

Leah Andrews is a strong and determined woman.  To prevent the ever-increasing power and destructive ability of the Anomaly, that would cause a planet-wide extinction she tries to return the Ancients to the Antarctic Continent.  If that was all Leah had to contend with that would be great, but she has others competing to recover the hidden treasures and the power of the Anomaly.  Meanwhile, Jack Hobson must get creative in to reach the Antarctic Continent and save Leah.  This is an exciting ending to the ICE trilogy!

Kevin Tinto, the author, continues to build the suspense and storyline expertly with equally strong plot twists throughout the series and does not disappoint with this book.  The ending was not what I expected at all!  His already strong character development continues through into this book as well.

The performance given by Pamela Almand is equally outstanding.  Not only do the words from another language roll off her tongue but she maintains a unique voice for each character.  The tempo of her performance is solid and measured making listening to her a pleasant experience.

I thoroughly enjoyed this series and look forward to more by Kevin Tinto and more performances by Pamela Almand.

ICE HAMMER
Boxed Set: Invasion, Insurgent, and Invincible

by Basil Sands
Narrated by: Basil Sands

Production by: Permuted Press

Brings an Ice Hammer to the Fight!

Brad Stone, his three sons, and his wife are all enjoying their summer … Brad is an IT guy, two of his boys are Scouts at camp, the third is a cook, and his wife is at home. Then the invasion came – not one country but multiple countries seemed to pull together to attack America. This series focuses specifically on Alaska.

Brad Stone aka Ice Hammer does what he needs to survive and save others. Retired from the military and a sit at your desk IT person, Stone takes on the challenge of leading his people and fighting the enemy. Aided by another lone survivor, Kharzai formerly a CIA operative and the ride begins!

Each book in this trilogy takes Stone, Kharzai, Youngmi, Sammi, Ian, and others one step closer to confronting the communist invaders in one form or another. Each member of Stone’s circle of friends and family must confront the enemy on their own terms.

Action-packed, this box set does not let up until the end. The end is a bit of a shocker but so well delivered and so appropriate! I have to say the author, Basil Sands, has one vivid and rich imagination – I definitely would NOT want to get on his bad side! The ending made me cringe, laugh, and then shudder. The books are epic in length, but you will not want to put them down until you reach the end. As the listener, you cannot help but become pulled in.

There are a lot of characters in these three books, but the Sands does an amazing job of keeping their stories straight and easy for the listener to follow. The characters and backstories are realistic and solidly built. Sands also plays the heartstrings making each step of the journey filled with doubt, fear, hope, and love.

The narrator, also the author, Basil Sands does a commendable job. I LOVE the voice of Kharzai! The rest are unique as well but the voice of Kharzai is absolutely PERFECT. The pronunciation, diction, cadence, and inflections are spot-on and fit the personality of the character impeccably.

I enjoyed the writing style – you knew whose perspective you were getting from the title. This helped me see the book on a much larger scale.

There were no issues with the production or quality of this book. The quality of the sound was crisp and clear.

This book was awarded the AudioBookReviewer’s Choice Award. This prestigious award is presented to the author of the book whose book is believed to deserve higher than the standard 5 Star Rating.

Idi and The Oracle’s Quest
Born to Be - Book 1

by T. N. Traynor
Review by T. C. White

Interesting Characters!

Idi, an orphan that does not know the feelings of love or acceptance, meets Marcus.  Together they set out on a quest to locate and protect the unborn future king and save the world from Norvora.  Marcus, knowing that Idi will be a great magician, helps Idi find himself and realize his true potential, but does it happen with enough time to save the world?

I was pleasantly surprised with the writing and story of this story.  There are many underlying messages in this book that make this perfect for a young adult or anyone for that matter. The world the author has built has the likes of pixies, dwarves, magicians, fairies, and witches.  Along with ancient threats returning that give a bit of suspense and thrill to the action.  This story has a nice build-up with descriptions that make you feel as though you are present.  Book 1 ends with a cliffhanger, which I am not typically a fan of, but with everything going on, I am looking forward to hearing book 2.

Steve White narrates this story. He does a wonderful job giving the many different characters a voice that is their own.  He not only gives each character a voice, but he also shows emotion for each as well.

Overall, this was a good listening experience.

IHVJ: THE LOVE CODE

by Foster Grant
Narrated by: Alex Cooper

Production by: Foster Grant

No One is Safe, Not Even a Princess!

Foster Grant had a great life, a small-time celebrity as a journalist and a TV newsman. He had it all – a great house and a gorgeous wife. Then he was recruited as a secret MI6 informant. He didn’t have to do much, just his regular job and ask more probing questions and observe the situation/person, then pass that information along to his head at MI6. It didn’t get dicey until Grant’s true love is murdered. Slow to anger, he is beyond angry. Those responsible will pay!

The author, Foster Grant, creates characters who are interesting and well-developed accordingly. Grant is vivid in his descriptions of scenes and emotions. I found his use of songlines to identify the different chapters interesting and applicable. There were times when I could anticipate the outcome but more times than not Grant would throw in another twist.

The narrator, Foster Grant, does an excellent job. He keeps the flow of the dialog going and does a convincing internal monologue as well. His performance adds to the story in an entertaining manner. He speaks clearly and smoothly.

This was a satisfying, easy listen that left me smiling and cheering for the underdogs.

IN THE SHADOW OF THE KINGMAKERS

by Vahid Imani
Narrated by: John Fleming

Production by: Stormtop Publishing

Thrilling Espionage!

This is a carefully woven story around true events surrounding the time of unrest in Tehran following WWI. James Malcolm, a British mastermind spy, is determined to create havoc on his American and Russian rivals. Protests and other moments of chaos Malcolm creates begin his plan. Discovering startling plans, Ali moves to protect his family and his love by trying to thwart Malcolm’s plans. However, it is true-unconditional love that 14-year-old Ali has for his family and his friend, Rose (an English member of the Consulate) that takes the center stage. Faced with imminent danger, Malcolm forces Rose to leave Tehran, but she won’t go until she sees Ali one final time – that moment is earth-shattering!

Vahid Imani, the author, carefully weaves a story that is captivating and immerses the listener deeply into the story after just a few minutes. Each character is developed with layers until they are fully developed. Each plot twist successfully elicits a response from the listener while also keeping them on the edge of their chair. His descriptions were rich in detail. Imani keeps each character and storyline moving at a steady pace, advancing the story and character development perfectly. While this is not my usual genre choice, I have to say Imani kept my attention and I hope there will be more forthcoming.

The narrator, John Fleming gives a solid strong performance, speaking clearly and with the appropriate accents. He adds to the suspense and draws the listener in with his performance. I think he was the perfect voice actor for this audiobook.

This book was awarded the AudioBookReviewers Choice Award as it is believed to deserve a higher than the standard 5-star rating. This book comes highly recommended.

There were no issues with the quality or production of this audiobook. The sound was clear and well done.

INFINITE SERIES

INFINITE
Book 1

by Jeremy Robinson
Narrated by: R.C. Bray

Reality in Hiding!

On a spaceship headed to the nearest inhabitable planet (only 1400 light-years away), a crew of 50 engineers and scientists sleep cryogenically – well, most of them.  William Chanokh wakes from a light form of cryogenic sleep after 10 years – things, including him, have changed.  He’s no longer mortal but rather immortal and Tom (another colleague/friend) drives that point home with a screwdriver to his neck!  From the first few moments of the audiobook, the action just keeps getting faster and more intense as Chanokh tries to rescue himself and the last remaining woman as they hurtled through space.  Nothing is as it seems and Chanokh is about to discover just how different!

The author, Jeremy Robinson keeps the action moving quickly throughout the book and manages to execute some amazing plot twists!  His dialog is realistic and keeps the story moving at a steady pace.  Robinson does a good job of keeping things straight for the listener, he’s very detailed keeping the listener engaged until the end.

The narrator, R.C. Bray is excellent.  His strong and deep voice resonates throughout the storyline.  His tone inflections, pauses, etc. infuse the story and action with just the right amount of energy.  While there are only 4 characters, each has their own unique voice.  Bray gives a clear, concise performance that moves the story forward at the needed clip.

Infinite
Book 2

by Jeremy Robinson
Narrated by: R.C. Bray

Never Ending Reality Search!

Infinite is the continuation of William Chanokh who boarded a spaceship called the Galahad and whose trajectory is … nowhere. Unable to die and confused by reality, Chanokh enters “The Great Escape” with his virtual AI named Gal. There he lives many lives and explores many worlds. The other woman who acts as a catalyst in the relationship between Gal and Chanokh is human and is in a deep cryo-sleep. Her name is Capria and she is designated to be Chanokh’s human mate if and when they arrive anywhere.

The adventure continues with Gal experiencing some glitches, Chanokh having memory loss and reality is on vacation! Trying to exit the virtual reality to figure out and fix Gal, Chanokh finds he may never truly be free from the Great Escape. His experience reminds me of being in a coma-like sleep filled with nightmares and never waking up. It’s already daunting to know he will never leave the spaceship but to encounter a vicious and deadly AI whom he loves and knows him too well … as well as other monsters … scary!

The characters are fully developed but with a few twists that give the listener a different perspective. The story is a story within a story within a story – in other words, each life Chanokh lives, the listener makes that trip with him. Each world is detailed and the author’s, Jeremy Robinson, world-building is put to the test as we experience several, each one more twisted than before. Robinson presents the listener with the same feeling the character Chanokh must be experiencing – loss, confusion, and a determination to figure out what is going on.

R.C. Bray, the narrator, again gives an excellent and strong performance. His voice is steady and consistent throughout the book. His subtle hints that people are not who they are with a slightly different sound or emotion is nicely done.

INNOCENT EARTH

by Dan E. McClenning

Review Written by W. D. Douglass

Fun Sci-Fi!

As a representative of AudioBookReviewer.com here is a review on Innocent Earth written by Dan E. McClenning and narrated by Catherine Fitzsimmons.

The world building in this story was well thought out. I especially liked that even though humanity has achieved world peace there is still political maneuvering for more money or more power. Character development was also another positive. Through changes in character's relationships, we can see subtle growth which assisted with the over plot of the story. Although some of the protagonist's actions went against his personality. The story itself was very believable with its roots to our own past. That believability is what makes this book so fun. Any sci-fi fan will enjoy this book, especially any believers in the ancient alien theory.

The narration done by Catherine Fitzsimmons was adequate. She told the story well enough, but the story did most of the heavy lifting. Her shortcoming was in her lack of constant performances. Between being unable to maintain an accent for most characters and other characters having a unique voice then losing that unique voice. I got lost in the dialog more than once.

IRON DOGS

by Neil Chase

Review Written by W. D. Douglass

Hybrid Horror with Twists and Action!

As a representative of AudioBookReviewer.com here is a review on Iron Dogs written and narrated by Neil Chase. This hybrid horror was an exciting adventure. The author managed a rare combination of the two genres, western and horror seamlessly. Each character got its time in the spotlight as the story progressed folding empathy and depth into this tale. As for the overall plot, there was never a dull moment and plenty of minor twists throughout.

The author’s narration of this story was well done. While managing to give each character a unique feel, the consistency of doing so slips throughout the book. Given this is Neil Chase’s first narration he delivered a solid performance overall.

Editing, quality, and production were on par with most books I have listened to.  It was clear, no issue with sound or quality. Although I am not a fan of foley work in audiobooks, this one might be the expectation to the rule. The use of which is tastefully and sparingly done.

ITERUM COMPENDIUM I
Books 1-3

by Michael Sean
Narrated by: Robert Fisher, Emily Woo Zeller

Production by: Michael Sean

Hidden Agendas and Unbelievable Truths!

Liam and Talia travel to a sister-like planet to explore only to discover that there were many hidden agendas amongst those involved in planning the space flight. Faced with memory loss, violence, and a jealous husband the two struggle to piece together their purpose. The memory loss and hidden agendas put the main characters, Liam and Talia in danger as they fight to free themselves from cannibals and other difficulties on the planet.

This was an interesting series as it was told from different viewpoints which added to the suspense. The author, Michael Sean builds the suspense by revealing tidbits of information within the different viewpoints. This allows the listeners to see and experience a much richer and fuller story. Each character is built with depth that continues to deepen throughout the book. As a storyteller, Sean crafts a tale that catches and holds the listener's attention.

The narrators, Robert Fisher and Emily Woo Zeller, performances are well-done as they are deliberate in transitioning from one to the other in the narration. Both are very skilled in their voices and speaking clearly with the proper amount of tonal inflection. I enjoyed listening to both the narrators. They were a good fit for this series.

This is a good, solid series that will keep the listener’s attention.

Jamie Quinn Mystery Collection
Books 1-3

by Barbara Venkataraman

Not Your Typical Lawyer!

Jamie Quinn Mystery Collection is the first three books in the series.  Jamie is grieving, is continuing with a successful family law practice and finds herself thrust into mystery and intrigue.  All the while, her emotional turmoil plays a significant and sometimes entertaining role in the stories.

Barbara Venkataraman does an excellent job of building Jamie’s character along with other characters who are not only pivotal but just as interesting.  Duke Broussard is key to all three books although Venkataraman brings him in slowly in the first book.  From a murdered rock star, a divorce case turned murder, and murder in the park system – while they are out of Jamie’s league, her friends step up and help her solve the cases.

Venkataraman takes her time building the characters and story plot.  The dialog is well done and realistic.  In each book, there are moments of hilarity yet also seriousness.  One cannot help but love Jamie – she is a small part residing within each of us.

The narrator, Carrie Lee Martz performed the book very well.  She spoke clearly and added the emotions needed to further the story and engage the listener.  My only issue was Duke did not sound like he was described in the book; I had trouble reconciling his looks to his sound.

JUDENREIN

by Harold Benjamin
Narrated by: Adam Hanin

A Thriller with a Powerful Punch!

Zacharia (Zack) Gurevitz is a man who has many faces and burdens to carry including an ex-Green Beret, a struggling to stay clean-Junkie, and a son who was excommunicated by the very people seeking his help. Trying to get his life together, Zack finds himself in the middle of a conspiracy where everyone has an ulterior motive. Stripped of their citizenship, and property, and herded into ghettos, the Detroit Jewish leaders are asking for his help and protection; he reluctantly agrees to help after being dragged in. Nothing is as it seems, no one speaks the truth and Zack must figure out the truth. Zack attempts to save the Jewish people of Detroit and ultimately worldwide as antisemitism will run rampant as it once did in Germany given how high up the conspiracy goes!

The author, Harold Benjamin, takes the actions, thoughts, and beliefs of white supremacist groups and puts them into words building a story that is very much relevant today, the past, and the future. This is a powerful book that calls out the antisemitism beliefs and thoughts demonstrating that antisemitism is not limited to one type of people but rather much more widespread and much better hidden.

Benjamin builds a strong story, provides deep character development of each person, and leaves his listeners on the edge of their chairs with each word spoken towards its climactic ending. Graphic in his details, Benjamin takes the listener for an unforgettable experience.

The narrator, Adam Hanin gives a strong performance that keeps the story flowing and projects the pain and emotions of Zack expertly. He spoke clearly and with the appropriate cadence. This is the first performance I have had the pleasure of hearing Adam Hanin, I look forward to hearing more.

I enjoyed this book as it was powerful and made me think long after the book ended.

JUSTIFIED
Domestic Violence, One Woman’s Decision
Brier Hospital

by Lawrence Gold

Deadly Consequences!

A powerful story of one woman’s struggle with domestic violence and its ultimate outcome.  The story of Millie Goodheart, chief librarian, who survived repeated brutal attacks by her drunken father finds herself in a relationship with a man just as violent and deadly.  Over the course of their marriage, her husband, Henry develops into a selfish, self-centered, and abusive man who has no interest in her as an equal nor interest in his daughters.

As with anyone who is in an abusive relationship, there comes a breaking point.  Millie reached hers.  Due to Henry’s standing in the city, Millie is charged with Henry's death, and thus the battle to remain free, clear her name, and remain with her daughters begins.

This is a sensitive subject, and, in my opinion, the author, Lawrence Gold presents the story of Millie in a subtle but poignant manner.  The story is woven carefully and with great thought, all the while providing useful information that not only others of abuse can take away but those who are witnesses as well.  As Gold describes, relationships are messy.

The character development was excellent and detailed.  Gold captured the personalities and thought processes of the victims and the interactions between each character flawlessly.  The ease with which Millie falls into sarcasm and the careful needling that goes on … flawless!  The twist at the end – magnificent; I never saw it coming!

The narration by Marcia E. H. Rezza was well done.  She narrated the story smoothly giving each character just the right voice and tone.  I loved the voice of Lola!  It was perfect!!!  Her performance kept the story moving, drawing the listener in even deeper.

KALEIDOSCOPE

A Psychic Suspense
(The Vision Chronicles, Book 1)

by Chariss K. Walker
Narrated by: David Williams

A Kaleidoscope of Horror!

Mike is a happy-go-lucky type of guy with a high-paying job as a geophysicist, he travels everywhere, is personable, gorgeous, and carries with him everywhere a deadly secret. This secret gives him a nightmarish ability to see frightening futures in a Kaleidoscope manner. Unable to figure out his gift and what he can do with it, he is now being hunted for it. These unseen people will stop at nothing to get the knowledge he has and if they get it, it will be deadly for someone. Now his five college friends and an FBI agent are involved.

Chariss Walker, the author, has taken her time to build her characters and the storyline. Walker’s intriguing plot has been carefully woven into a mesmerizing and edge-of-your-chair thriller. The story moves slowly at first but only so that the listener can grasp the situation fully. Once Walker accomplishes this, the gloves are off and the action is non-stop. This is not only well written, but the dialog is solid and realistic. There is the ending, which is a cliffhanger, (Walker warned me about it) but to be honest, I think it was perfect! She handled the cliffhanger in such a way that it made me want to hear the next one. Her talent at weaving the story and leading up to the ending was well executed. The plot twists were unexpected!

The narrator, David Williams was superb. He gave each character a voice making them unique, and he spoke with confidence and with a rhythm that kept the story flowing well. He spoke clearly and with enthusiasm. I enjoyed listening to him tell the story.

I have always enjoyed paranormal stories, and this is one I enjoyed immensely.

KARMA: A MYSTERY IN PARIS

by Marilyn Freeman
Narrated by: Virginia Ferguson

Production by: Marilyn Freeman

Mystery and More!

Adrienne has made a decision that has haunted her for years.  She is going to try to find her missing mother!  However, before she can leave for Paris (the last place her mother had been headed), a gentleman visits her and claims to be her father …

This is not your typical mystery, it is a mystery that spans years and involves Nazis, conmen, police, and more.  This is an adventure filled with suspense and several twists.  The author, Marilyn Freeman engages the listeners by giving insight into Adrienne’s thoughts and feelings.  It was not all about adventure or suspense – it was about a young woman whose mother left her and while it was not touchy-feely – one did grasp somewhat how this young woman felt mentally and emotionally.

The characters, like the twists and plot, were well developed.  The dialog was realistic, and the story flowed smoothly.  Virginia Ferguson, the narrator, gave a solid performance with a consistent narration, distinct voices, and authentic-sounding accents.  Her voice was soothing, and she interjected the right amount of inflection.

This is a good book for anyone looking for a good mystery with twists and one that draws in the listener.

KILLER TRACE SERIES

Narrated by: Katelyn Michals

Production by: Violet Earring Audio

The narrator, Katelyn Michals provides a solid performance!  She speaks smoothly, with passion and enthusiasm appropriately.  She never misses a beat and along with the story plot, takes the listener deeper into the story.

An excellent thriller that is beyond interesting – sometimes the bad guys are doing good, just unconventionally!

FATED REFLECTION
Killer Trace Series, Book 2

by Dan Newberry
Narrated by: Katelyn Michals

Production by: Violet Earring Audio

Vigilante Justice Best Served!

The Tavenner group has returned for more vigilante justice and this time bringing into the fold beautiful female twins. They complete a hunt, and take on the underworld of Nevada and the FBI! Their final act is setting up the real estate scammer for a nasty failed deal!

The author, Dan Newberry, weaves an intricate story of vigilante justice complete with plot twists. He is a masterful storyteller revealing details in small amounts but that are crucial to the storyline. He is concise. Each character is fully developed and has a rich storyline. Newberry’s fresh take on justice keeps the listeners attentive!

The narrator, Katelyn Michals gives an excellent performance. She builds the suspense accordingly and keeps the rhythm going consistently. She draws the listener in and keeps them captive as she reveals the action. Her unique voices for each character are well done also.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this series and hope for more. I enjoy the fact that Dan Newberry finishes each book off without cliffhangers. There are plenty of twists and moments of suspense but no cliffhangers at the end. Further, his knowledge of guns is apparent and well-communicated. This is one of those “you can’t stop until you reach the end” books.

KNOWING GOD

by Donald Allen Kirch
Narrated by: Monica Jaye

Recalled from a Selfish Act or Love Finds A Way!

Nathan Andrews tells us his story and how he found himself with little to live for and sought to end his suffering, until visions of a mysterious and beautiful woman appear during his near-death experience ordering him to go back, away from the light.  Then he encounters the same vision in the park and his heart is lost.  Given who she is, one would expect Nathan to turn tail and run but his heart is gone and so he struggles through this new and different relationship.

The build-up of discovering the true identity of Amanda is entertaining in itself, especially when Gabriel makes his appearance as a handsome winged man … the fun keeps going until Lucifer makes his jaunt into Nathan’s life then things get a little out of whack forcing Nathan to make choices.

This is a story of one man and his relationship with God; it is not a common or stereotypical religious relationship either.  It is way more than that as he gets to “know” God uniquely.  I have heard other works by Donald Allen Kirch and find them all not only interesting but insightful, different, and yet still very much focused on moral beliefs and behaviors that challenge the norm. This book is no different as it challenges one’s view of God, the Bible/written works, and common points of faith shared across the religions in a subtle yet powerful way.   This is not a preachy book by any means but simply opens one’s eyes up to other possibilities with a slightly tongue-in-cheek manner.  Humankind is not infallible!

Kirch develops each character fully as well as the storyline.  Each plot twist is unexpected and complete.  The dialog is well-developed also, adding to the strength of the story and each religious revelation.

The narrator, Monica Jaye gives a wonderful performance with a strong believable, and natural voice for each character.  Her consistent narrative voice is easy to listen to and captures the emotions and personality of each character.  I enjoyed listening to Jaye and found her voice added to the story and characters in a positive and powerful manner.

I also enjoyed Kirch’s earlier work, “Drop Dead Gorgeous.”  Both of these books are great listens!  I look forward to hearing more by Kirch!

Lassa The Viking the Dragon’s Inferno

by Dean Yurke
Narrated by: Simon Marks

Epic Battles with Comedic Relief!

A young man and his brother are conscripted to fight in the Viking Army during the 11th century. Lassa is a simple teenager who has zero skills and is not a fighter. To avoid certain death during his first battle facing huge, tough warriors, Lassa hides in the back letting everyone else do the fighting. That is until he trips and accidentally kills the Saxon leader. Then he becomes a “hero” that everyone expects brave and miraculously leading. Lassa discovers the true adversary of the Vikings is the Dragon King and Lassa finds he is the one destined to lead the Viking army into battle.

The author, Dean Yurke, is a masterful story crafter of the short and humorous comedy of errors that keeps the listener on the edge of their chair just waiting for the next hilarious misstep by our unlikely hero. Yurke provides strong dialog, rich and vivid details, and strong flawless character development. The plot twists are comedic moments are noteworthy and executed impeccably. I thoroughly enjoyed the growth of Lassa and his comedic moments thoroughly.

The narrator, Simon Marks gives a gifted performance providing a unique and expertly timed deliverance. His talented performance gave life to Lassa and other characters, making them real. The unique voices for each character made them more realistic and believable. The injection of emotion was well-time also and appropriate to the character and situation. I hope to hear more from Simon Marks.

LEAGUE OF THE LOST FOUNTAIN

by Jason Born
Narrated by: Brian T. Schultz

Production by: Halldorr Publishing

Historical Adventure, Fun and Magic!

League of the Lost Fountain is a tale involving time travel, discovering the fountain of youth, pirates, cannibals, and so much more! It is a book of life lessons focusing on love, forgiveness, truth, and kindness. This is a fun story rich with vivid details and the wonder of magic. Even the man who created the most magical place in the world makes a brief appearance!

Jason Born creates a story that is colorful, charming, and delightful. Each character is well developed but only when it is appropriate, which then adds to the richness of the story making the twists even more significant. Born writes in a style that enables the listener to keep the time travel piece straight as well as the unique situations the characters find themselves in.

The narrator, Brian T. Schultz does a commendable job of providing unique voices for each character along with accents and other identifying vocal attributes. Schultz keeps the flow of the story moving at a quick but steady pace, adding intonations where they are appropriate. He kept the story moving forward and steady.

This is a fun book and while it may be for young adults, it has valuable life lessons that all adults need to be reminded of at any age! I highly recommend this book.

There were no issues with the production or quality of this audiobook.

LIGHTNING WINGMAN

by Thomas Willard
Narrated by: Greg Barnett

Production by: Thomas Willard

Life-Defying Action!

During WWII in Germany, two P-38 fighter pilots define heroism and action by saving one another from multiple life-threatening disasters. If not for the other, each would have died painful deaths. Then comes the healing process. Trust and romance blossom and grow between the two pilots.

The author Thomas Williard is very knowledgeable about the time period, fighter jets, and guns going into detailed descriptions. The romance built between the two lead characters is well done. I did question whether the Airforce would have encouraged the growth of their relationship but decided it really didn’t matter. It is a well-written book with character depth and true, realistic emotional responses. In the beginning, Willard captures your attention with the life-defying action, then settles into growing the trust between two men facing death and the romance piece of the story.

The narrator, Greg Barnett gives a good performance. He speaks clearly and his cadence is strong and smooth. I have not had the pleasure of hearing Barnett before but look forward to more performances.

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS TO
REDUCE ANXIETY AND STRESS

by Alexandria Sparks
Narrated by: Paul Casselle

Production by: Gutel Leather

Mental Health Care!

While this is not a book that falls within the genres normally accepted here at AudioBookReviewer, it is one that carries important messages, guidance, and insight into all-too-common situations that a loved one (or even yourself) might be suffering through silently.   This book resonates with me for various reasons.  I suffer through anxiety/panic attacks and others in my family do as well so I had an interest in this book.

The author, Alexandria Sparks provides some valuable insight into how best to deal with these situations from deep breathing to avoiding those sensory overwhelming situations.  As a self-help book, this one is informative with both preventing and dealing with these crisis moments.

The narrator, Paul Casselle, speaks clearly and with a smooth softness that enables one to hear truths and tips.  His cadence was subtle yet consistent making the book listenable.  The only downside to the book itself was the footnotes.  I would suggest handling the footnotes another way.

MISADVENTURES MEMOIRS

LITTLE GIRL SCREAM
Book 1

by Al E. Boy, F. Carod
Narrated by: Pam Tsujioka

Production by: Al E. Boy

Slightly Twisted and … WOW!

Imagine the most elaborate, guest-oriented hotel in Cancun – the sunsets, the people, the sun, the beach, the serial killer roaming unrestrained, and you have a terrifying thriller that will give you nightmares!

From the first minute, Al E. Boy and F. Carod, the authors wove a delicate web of deceit, intrigue, and horror. A young 14-year-old boy is found murdered, other guests and members of the staff are disappearing only to be found bloody, tortured, and/or murdered. There is more to this story than meets the eye and it is Boy’s usual and methodical storytelling method that keeps the listener spellbound.

Boy and Carod time the development of each character slowly and at different times, some come at the very end of the book which makes this story even more riveting! I listened to this book last week and have spent the past few days thinking about it – not that I had a choice! Boy & Carod know how to capture and hold the audience’s attention well after the story ends.

While I have enjoyed Boy’s other book, The Adventures of Fawn, this book is so much darker than one would expect. I was stunned. I loved it! I enjoyed the dark twisted mind that created this story, that teased out each detail, and the slow final reveal.

The narrator, Pam Tsujioka, as usual, gave a wonderful performance! She assumed each character and performed them professionally. Tsujioka is one voice actor that I love to hear. She interjected the perfect amount of fear, anger, doubt, and other emotions that ran rampant throughout this book. Her voice is very versatile!

I look forward to more books in this genre by Boy and performed by Tsujioka! This is not for the faint of heart but rather perfect for anyone who loves a thriller!

THE TIGER’S TEARS

by Al E. Boy and F. Carod
Narrated by: Pam Tsujioka

Production by: John A. McNeil

WOW! Horrifyingly Fascinating!!!

Misadventures Memoirs: The Tiger’s Tears is the second book in this series that shows the deepness of the connections between Martin Tillman, Mathis, and Sofia. Now that Tillman is out of the way, there is a new killer. The Killer in this book was one of Martin Tillman’s cronies and partners in torture, sadistic behavior, and murder. Mathis, Sofia, and her family become targets as the long list of murders and crimes that occurred during Tillman’s time is reopened and closely examined. The new head of the evil empire has placed a target on the Tillman’s survivors and family. Deep in survival mode, Mathis and Sofia probe their feelings.

The authors, Al Boy and F. Carod weave a solid story within the world of a sadistic psychopath and deliver a tense and riveting listen. I will not sugarcoat this review as the story, and descriptions are eye-popping and at times surpass the horror themes found in Hostel and Saw. Boy and Carod show their listeners just how dark a person can become and how well a deviant can hide. The authors delve deeply into the world of sadistic psychopaths providing a nail-biting, breath-taking plot that will linger in the minds of the listeners long after the story ends.

While I do not enjoy hearing how people suffer, it is the psychological aspect of the story itself that is fascinating. This book is fascinating, terrifying, and riveting. Once you begin, there is no turning back until the last words are spoken.

The narrator, Pam Tsujioka delivers an excellent performance. She never misses a beat and speaks clearly and with perfect emotion. She slips into each character and delivers a noteworthy performance delivering each line in the tone and personality of each character. Each character has a unique voice; she speaks clearly and with a solid cadence.

I highly recommend this book because it is well done, intriguing, and horrifyingly fascinating.

THE TIE THAT BLINDS
Book 3

by Al E. Boy, F. Carod
Narrated by: Pam Tsujioka

Production by: John A. McNeil

Mesmerizing, Action-Filled Misadventure!

Dale Mathis is missing, presumed dead and Sofia Hernandez is healing and missing Dale. It has been recently discovered that the highly sought-after tiger USB which is known to contain highly sensitive and incriminating evidence against those in the world of Senator Rafael Medina also contained another piece of information. This information is even more potent as it shows how deeply entrenched the corruption and evil deeds are. As with all things despicable and evil, a few people have vowed revenge and the action-packed adventure begins with a bang!

Once again, Al E. Boy and F. Carod have provided a well-crafted continuation of the Misadventures Memoirs series. Boy and Carod weave a complex, well-planned story with colorful characters and stimulating plot twists. The personalities of each character continue throughout the series while also showing some growth. Complex and rich with diverse and determined characters, it is the vivid details within the story that provide clarity. The story flows naturally and the plot twists are edge of your seat. Further, I like how his book’s title fits naturally into the storyline.

The narrator, Pam Tsujioka once again gives a wonderful performance. Her voice is unique for each character and reflects their personality. I’m not sure how she does it, but she alternates between characters and their genders with ease. Her range of voices is astounding. The words flow smoothly and clearly. She invokes emotions from the listener as she projects the appropriate emotion, sound, and solid cadence. I have enjoyed everything I have heard from Tsujioka.

I highly recommend this series and this book. The courageous characters go hand in hand with the less-than-morally stellar characters. The author and narrator work well together and their work reflects their team.

The Audiobookreviewer’s Choice Award was awarded to the authors of books 2 and 3. The ABR Choice Award is a prestigious award presented to the author of the book whose story is believed to deserve higher than the standard 5 Star Rating.

MONSTER STORY

by McCarty Griffin
Narrated by: Sharon Huff

Production by: McCarty Griffin

A Fresh New Werewolf Story!

Christy McCauley returns home to West Virginia after her grandmother passes away leaving the family home and everything to Christy. Claiming the family estate which is buried deep in the woods of rural August County and houses some of her fondest memories slowly becomes a nightmare. Something is hunting in the area, something big and scary with a vicious and deadly nature.  Christy must decide to stay and fight or flee.

The author McCarty Griffin weaves a preternatural story complete with a horrific monster and a town that has just begun to piece the puzzle together of a murderer on a rampage. The personalities of each character shine through and are vividly described. The action is realistic and detailed allowing the listener to slowly piece the story together only to be given new information via a plot twist.

The narrator, Sharon Huff delivers a performance that is clear and well done.  Her voice for each character is vivid and consistent throughout the story.  She kept up with the action and kept the story moving forward at a steady and quick pace.  Huff keeps the audience engaged and attentive.

From beginning to end, the story is gripping and terrifying at times.  What and who the monster winds up being are not entirely expected.  Anyone who loves horror and mystery will enjoy this book.

MORE!

by Tammie Rothermel

Each step of their romance and later their professional relationship is a minefield that they must maneuver through the obstacles successfully. It isn’t until later in their relationship that Nicole discovers the true Grant and her life of overcoming even more thrown at her.

The author, Tammie Rothermel creatively weaves a colorful, well-constructed story that is unforgettable. Each character central to the storyline is well developed, those that are supporting characters are developed just enough to move the story along. The plot twists are well-executed and while anticipated they are still suspenseful at times making the treachery even more poignant.

Interesting story and well-written. Several themes run throughout the story - domestic violence, what is love, what would you do for someone you love, and more!

The narrator, also the author Tammie Rothermel gives a solid performance. Each emotion thought, and action has the right amount of emotion projected. Her cadence is smooth and steady paced. She is pleasant to hear.

MORE THAN EVIL

by Bil Richardson
Narrated by: Sky Soleil

Production by: Bil Richardson

Review by W. D. Douglass

Truly Terrifying!

More than Evil was written by Bil Richardson and narrated by Sky Soleil. This story is as advertised, relentless and high-octane. Starting out with a betrayed man's lust for revenge and ending with explosions and sacrifice. The writing does feel like a blockbuster of a movie.

Not only is this tale well written, this audiobook also includes music and Foley work throughout. While this provides a unique experience for the listener it can be a bit distracting at times. Most audiobooks provide a relaxing environment no matter the genre. Just a listener and the spoken word provide the same feeling like reading. I found while focusing on the plot that the music jarred me out of the flow of the story multiple times.

Editing, quality, and production were outstanding compared to most books I have listened to. Even though I do not like music, Foley work in audiobooks. The quality of both was excellent.

The narrator Sky Soleil did a great job and was a perfect match for this tale. His voice acting was consistent throughout. Being able to jump from characters and maintain their emotions and voices.

MR. DALTON’S CHRISTMAS

by Robert A. Valle
Narrated by: Luke de Maine

Production by: Robert Valle

Christmas Magic!

A night of disaster changes Edward Dalton’s life forever. Dalton chooses to live in near isolation except to drag himself to work at Macy’s every day to pay the bills. Deciding to step out for a change, a tremendous snowstorm with freezing temperatures arrives. Then Christmas magic steps in and his life once again changes forever.

Robert A. Valle, the author, gives a fresh look at Christmas magic. This is a well-written short story that leaves behind a warm fuzzy feeling and an appreciation for hope, love, and faith. Each character is developed as needed, allowing for the listener to connect even briefly with each one. Although the manager of the ski lodge is not fully developed, one can appreciate and understand his feeling of being overwhelmed with helping with the search and fulfilling expectations of the guests that are safe. The story flows smoothly and with one or two twists that leave the listener smiling.

The narrator, Luke de Maine gives an excellent performance. He uses unique voices for each character, and they remain consistent throughout. He projects the emotions and keeps the story flowing through his vocal intonations. I enjoyed his performance.

This is a fun yet poignant Christmas story that everyone should hear regardless of the time of year.

NEPTUNE CITY
A Mystery

by Dale T. Phillips
Narrated by: Robert Ferraro

Review Written by W. D. Douglass

Secrets, Danger & Deceit - a Great Mix for a Mystery!

When LA detective Jim Lloyd reluctantly returns to his NJ hometown for a final funeral. Lloyd’s professional skill set reaches from coast to coast as he is asked to consult on a murder investigation. Throughout the book, he is bombarded with reminders of his past in the town and why he left. This story is full of secrets, deceit, and danger all of which is compacted into a less than 4 hour listen. Needless to say, the author did a great job cutting the fat to make this a quick and fun read.

The narrator Robert Ferraro did an exceptional job, being a perfect match for the tone of this book. The fact that he is an award-winning performer is evident from the first chapter to the last.

NEW GODS
The Johnson Trilogy
Book 1

by Graham McQuade

Jaw-Dropping Evil Conspiracy!

A team of cave divers descends into the deepest cave of the Rhone-Alps where they discover larger-than-life bodies of 8 deceased beings.  As they catalog their findings the unthinkable occurs setting off what could be the deadliest global event ever.   As the virus pops up in Africa, and then France, the team of Margaret Johnson and Jon Wallis are faced with not only figuring out what the virus is but how to stop it.  It is their work that brings to light a life-threatening, economically devastating, and evil conspiracy.

The author Graham McQuade delivers a powerful book that captures the listener’s attention and holds it to the end.  I was surprised as the first section of the book gave a different feel for what to expect, and then it took an entirely different turn all within a few pages. Several times the plot twists were staggering moments.  Rich with details and dialog, McQuade delivers realistic and relatable characters faced with terrifying moments.  Additionally, his character development was solidly done.

The narrator, Walt Allen, did splendidly in performing the book.  He interjected the right amount of emotion, strength, and animation into his performance.  Each character was authentic and genuine in their personality and actions.  It was almost as if Allen donned each person when he spoke.

The story was well done with short chapters that were packed with action and each significant to the story. The ending was well done leaving the listener with the desire to where Johnson and Wallis go next.

ONE DARK NIGHT
Harry Starke Genesis, Book 6

by Blair Howard
Narrated by: Tom Lennon

Killer in Cold Case Strikes Again!

Fourteen years later, Harry Starke is given a cold case. A cold case which involves two teenagers brutally shot and left nude in the forest thus removing all trace evidence the killer might have left behind. Both teenagers were from different sides of the track – she came from a wealthy family and the young man from the wrong side of the tracks and with a criminal background.

Harry Starke, ex-cop and now a private investigator, and his team are given this cold case to solve. Although the cops suspected someone close to the family, they could never prove it – now Starke must stir up the memories and dig deep … will he find the killer before they kill again? With each step forward, Starke is pushed back two! Missing files, missing evidence, lies, and protecting family are just a few things he must navigate around.

I thought Blair Howard, the author, crafted a solid mystery with strong characters. Howard captured and with words painted the emotions of protection, love, and desire for revenge very well. Howard keeps the listener guessing with each new plot twist. Each character is well built and keeps the story moving forward. The solving of the cold case is well structured and methodical.

The narrator, Tom Lennon gives a solid performance. His cadence is smooth and steady, he speaks clearly and concisely. His tonal inflection is balanced.

I enjoyed this story immensely and look forward to hearing more.

I normally do not speak to the covers of the audiobooks, but this one was well done! It caught my attention and communicated the action the listener was about to hear!

PAGES FROM THE PIZZA CROWS
ODD FICTION
Book 1

by Evan B. Witmer
Narrated by: Mark Watson

Production by: Evan Witmer

Oddly Curious and Mysterious!

This audiobook is distinctly unique and has a quality of oddness. A young man finds that if he feeds a crow certain food, he will receive gifts. Rings, shiny objects, and then when he feeds the crow pizza, the crow brings pages of an unknown author’s writing.

The author, Evan B. Witmer pulls together unique stories, each one mesmerizing with each passing second. My favorite was Bedfellows followed by Captured by Animals. In Bedfellows, a young couple finds themselves connected supernaturally. When they try to break the supernatural connection they share, it does not end well. The short story “Captured by Animals” is about a writer who spies on others to enable him to write his stories, but the writer is completely unexpected.

The listener must trust Witmer. There is just enough of the story to capture your attention and get you to stick with the stories. Witmer does a good job of building each character, world, storyline, and crafts unexpected twists. The stories give just enough of a foundation to keep your attention. This requires the Listener to take the stories at face value and follow the author’s lead. In other words, prepare your imagination because you will want it.

The narrator, Mark Watson does an excellent job of narration. His performance is fluid and moves forward smoothly. He clearly articulates and is consistent. He has unique voices for each character that gives more depth.

PARADOX MOON: THE BOOK OF REGENESIS

by D. Scott Dickinson

Review by W. D. Douglass

Clinical Traveler’s Guide!

As a representative of AudioBookReviewer.com here is a review on Paradox Moon: The First Book of Regenesname written by D. Scott Dickinson. A clinical traveler’s guide to an alien moon. Through the author’s use of variously varied vocabulary the planet’s environment, plants, and fauns were well described and imaginative.

Unfortunately, this tale was lacking in any character development and plot. Huge chunks of this book were repetitive and superfluous. The protagonist and other characters felt very two dimensional. Their motivations and actions had no real substance for the majority of the book. Even though the book is full of interior monologues the protagonist's name wasn't even used until near the end of the book. On the occasions when the protagonists expressed any emotion, it felt shoehorned in. There was no overarching conflict established until the afterword. Overall I had no reason to care about the characters of the story.

The narration was performed by Zacharia Greene. Given the dryness of this tale, there wasn't much for this narrator to work with. His tone was melodic and lacked any depth to hook the listener.

Editing, quality, and production fell short with most books I have listened to.  The narrator sounded like he was talking into a tin can. Also, post-production editing was very obvious.

PERILOUS GAMBIT
A Mike Stoneman Thriller, Book 5

by Kevin G. Chapman
Narrated by: Kevin G. Chapman

Production by: First Legacy Studios

A Thrill A Minute in Vegas!

Planning a wedding can be overwhelming and exhausting, that is a given. Toss in an unexpected pregnancy, drag performers, a family secret, a territorial cop, and murder; well, the wedding just became a tremendous crapshoot!  Mike Stoneman is part of the wedding party for his friends Jason and Rachel. When a couple of drag performers come up dead, and Rachel’s brother, Jackie is about to become number three Mike finds himself knee-deep in murder to try to save the wedding.

The author, Kevin G. Chapman takes family dramatics and wedded bliss to new heights in this novel mixing in murder, mayhem, and mystery! He develops the story smoothly and with details that enrichen the story. His character development is perfect as are the plot twists. The dialog was well written and kept the story moving at a fair clip. His role as narrator was well done also. His performance was clear, smooth, and his being author, as well as narrator, gave his performance an authority to the story that others would not have.

If you enjoy mysteries and solving crimes, this is a recommended listen! The Mike Stoneman series is a good one to get hooked on!

SANDY PIKE SERIES

PIKE’S POTENTIAL
Book 1

by John Spearman
Narrated by: Ruel T. Fulford

Production by: John J. Spearman

An Immersive Military Thriller!

This is a military space thriller that captures the imagination in a variety of ways. Intricate battles, survival, conspiracies, attempted murder, and cover-ups. Captain Pike finds himself being moved like a pawn. He is faced with making hard decisions that could result in his court-martial at the very least. However, Pike is the one who follows the rule book both in life and on duty, does what is right, and fights the good fight.

The author, John Spearman has crafted a storyline meant to capture the attention of his audience and keep it. I enjoyed the different characters and how he took his time to create them and build a connection between the characters and his listeners. He portrayed the relationships built between comrades in arms accurately and strategically. We watch each character grow into a strong person with strong and appropriate character traits. He is deliberate and masterful in telling his story. I came to enjoy Lt. Commander Pike and his strategic thinking and interactions with the crew in “teaching moments.” Attention to detail is extensive yet not overwhelming.

The narrator, Ruel T. Fulford is not someone I have heard before. However, his narration/performance was perfect for this book. I enjoyed his different voices that were unique to the characters and were consistent. He kept the story moving forward and adding to an already exciting and well-done story.

This is a rare book that not only captures attention but holds it hostage until the last word is spoken. I felt totally and completely immersed in the book because of the excellent foundation of the story and characters that John Spearman completed. As book 1 in a series, I cannot wait to hear the next in the series.

There were no issues with the quality or production of this audiobook. The sound was clear and well done.

PIKE’S PASSAGE
Book 2

by John Spearman
Narrated by: Ruel T. Fulford

Production by: John J. Spearman

Thrilling Space Opera!

Due to the Planetary Alliance losing the war, Sandy Pike has left the service and instead assumes a new career with a new crew. Their new pirating venture increases the coins in their pockets and sets them on a collision course with evil. Not only does Pike have his crew to keep safe, but his girlfriend, and children.

The author, John Spearman once again creates an amazing adventure for Pike and his crew. His storyline flows smoothly, the dialog is authentic, and his characters are well-developed. He developed each character fully and provided an endearing connection to some. Each scene is detailed and realistic. This is the only book that I have listened to that has not only made me shudder but also made my skin crawl with one scene. Spearman is a talented writer who can describe a scene and elicit a response with few details.

The narrator, Ruel T. Fulford, gives a solid performance. He keeps the story moving forward with his tone and cadence. His consistent and unique voices keep the listener connected and the story even easier to follow.

The Sandy Pike series is interesting, and I wonder what trouble Pike will find himself in next!

PINHOLE

by Matthew Kagle
Narrated by: Various Voice Actors

Production by: Matthew Kagle

Time Travelling Manipulators - Good or Bad?!

Pinhole is multiple fiction stories about time travel.  The author, Matthew Kagle, does a fantastic job intertwining all of the different short stories together to make connections throughout the book.  I enjoyed that each story had a different feel/story type (i.e. thriller, adventure, thought-provoking). It kept me engaged with the changes in the stories.  In addition, each story was well-developed as were the characters.

The narration was completed by multiple voice actors, each doing a great job.  The multiple voice actors provided a good separation for each story.  Each actor provided the perfect pitch, tone, and texture to their characters and story.

If you enjoy a book that engages you and makes you ponder long after the last word is spoken, this is the book for you!

PRINCESS
The Johnson Family, Book 1

by Holly J. Martin
Narrated by: Rebecca Caton

Production by: Holly J. Mullen

Family, True Love, and Misunderstandings!

Jack’s life was easy in the beginning – a loving family, and friends. A discovered forbidden love resulted in her being sent to an abusive halfway house. Things can only get better from there, right? Jared shared Jack’s family and was respected by members of the community – well, except for his father. He fell in love with Jack and she was his only true love. Their struggle to return to one another’s arms is detailed thoroughly.

The author, Holly Martin, kept the central love story visible throughout the book. While Jack and Jared had other experiences, Martin did not let her listeners lose sight of the main story. Their struggles were detailed vividly. Each character was well-developed eliciting a response from the listener hoping for true love to win out and just punishment for others. The plot was well-planned and executed with several twists.

The narrator, Rebecca Caton, did a good job as narrator. Her voice was smooth and even. She gave the main characters a unique attribute to their voices.

For romance enthusiasts, this is an excellent book.

PUCK AND MINNIE: ALL THAT IS

by Suzanne Warfield
Narrated by: Scott Ellis

Production by: Suzanne Warfield

Delightfully Rich Story!

This is one of those rare books that make the listener think deeply about his/her own faith concerning love and the “All That Is.” Since the beginning of time, Puck (a canine) has been charged with teaching humans about love; love in all things – decisions, interactions with others, and not letting fear or hatred seep into your heart. With each return, Puck learns new lessons and encounters new humans that he comes to love deeply. However, before Puck can move onward into the heavenly after, he must correct a past mistake that haunts him with each return. Even Puck learns he must forgive himself and others to right wrongs.

Suzanne Warfield, the author, has taken a beautiful story and woven it into an emotional tale of love, and forgiveness. Warfield carefully builds the story, sometimes going backward before she moves forward. This writing style adds to the poignancy of this story. It is clear that her message is powerful and impacts each person slightly differently in regard to how they connect with the characters or story. She is deliberate in character building while weaving her story.

The narrator, Scott Ellis gives a strong performance. Ellis moves the story at a steady pace offering up intense and emotional moments as reflected in the story. As the dog – Puck – he is able to sound innocent; as the others in the story, his voices reflect their personalities and the situations clearly.

I do not like to cry. I usually go out of my way to avoid those sappy movies or books that pull at the audience’s heartstrings making the tears flow freely. However, this book is well worth the tears and heartache as the story and its ending are perfect!

RAVENS IN THE RAIN: A NOIR LOVE STORY

by Christie Santo, Jeff Santo
Narrated by: Jeff Santo, Christie Santo

Production by: Santo Films

When Fate Steps In!

Ravens in the Rain is not your typical love story. Carney is a former filmmaker who has hit bottom; Pru is a woman with a sordid and dangerous past who captivates Carney. The foreplay is a cat and mouse game between the two as they dance around one another. The true test of their new relationship centers on a murder.

New authors, Christie Santo and Jeff Santo weave a noir-like romance story with mystery and murder. Each character is well-developed and fully integrated into the story. Each plot twist adds to the storyline keeping the listener off-balance. The story flows smoothly and plot twists are unexpected and cleanly executed. The dialog is well done and keeps the story moving forward.

The narrators (also the authors), Christie Santo and Jeff Santo give a good performance. They both seem to assume their role and wear them well. So much so that their interaction seems smooth and natural. They spoke clearly and projected the appropriate amount of emotions.

The production and sound were of good quality. This is an interesting storyline that those who enjoy noir-like stories will enjoy this book.

Louella Nelson, the author, does an impressive job researching and providing insight into the thinking of the movement and accurately reflects the actions and beliefs of society during that time. The plot and twists were well done. Her writing style allows the listener to blend into the story. Her characters were well-developed and fit into the story well. A creative storyteller, Nelson uses vivid details to weave a solid romance and historical details about the movement to enrich the characters.

The performance of the narrator, Mary Castillo, was smooth and clear. Her voices resonated with the listener as they were passionate, steady, and genuine reflecting the appropriate amount of emotion. She moved the story forward with her narration.

A good book that plays on the heartstrings of the listener from the romantic aspect to the rights of women.

REBEL: THE AWAKENING
(REBEL - THE LIFE AND TIMES OF WOLFE TONE)

by B F McGowan

Exciting Historical Fiction of Tone!

Theobald Wolfe Tone lived a short life but whose impact on the lives of his fellow Irishmen was life-changing.  Tone was a passionate man with ideas of freedom and rights that his fellow Irishmen were being denied.  Instead of keeping his head down, he rose and fought to unite his countrymen to take on the British Empire.

The author, BF McGowan carefully weaves a story around the actions and life of Tone in a creative and satisfying manner.  McGowan provides insight into the life of Tone, his passion and desires as well as his mindset to secure the freedom and rights of his countrymen.  The historical pieces of this story are well researched and presented.  The creative fiction was woven carefully into the historical fiction pieces of this story in an interesting and careful manner.

The narrator, A.W. Dickson gives a solid performance.  He injects the correct amount of emotion and speaks clearly. He speaks with a cadence that gives emphasis to situations and words appropriately. His performance was enjoyable and gave character to the story.

If you enjoy historical fiction, this is an interesting and well-done audiobook.

There were no issues with the production or quality of this audiobook.

ROANOKE ISLAND MURDERS

by Joe C. Ellis
Narrated by: Robert Ferraro

Production by: Upper Ohio Valley Books

Unpredictable!

Roanoke Island Murderers was written by Joe C. Ellis and narrated by Robert Ferraro. After a long-lost journal written by Eleanor Dare, one of the original members of Roanoke Island's Lost Colony, is discovered in a precarious location. Detective Weston Wolf is drawn into this web of deception and murder by a beautiful woman who claims to be a descendant of the diary's author. As the bodies pile up, Wolf must untangle this web to save his neck. This detective story is a solid read. The author was able to make the conversations between characters seem natural while keeping the story moving. From the beginning to the end, the plot twists and action didn't stop. As soon as I thought I had this read figured out I was proven wrong. I enjoyed how the main character gets caught up in the excitement and then has inner turmoil about his actions after the dust settles. If you like detective books combined with being continually caught off guard pick up this one.

The narrator Robert Ferraro did an exceptional job, being a perfect match for the tone of this book. The fact that he is an award-winning performer is evident from the first chapter to the last. His only shortcoming in this story is during long conversations between characters. At that point, the characters start to sound too similar.

RUBY’S RISK
Westward Home and Hearts
Mail-Order Brides, Book 2

by Marisa Masteron
Narrated by: Caroline Turner Cole

Production by: 1967

Chance Meeting Leads to a Romance of a Lifetime!

A chance meeting with a matchmaker, Ruby Hastings decides she has been a spinster long enough. Betrothed to Ezra King, Ruby takes on relocating and becoming a mother not once but twice! Unfortunately, Ezra has a secret … and a lynch mob is coming for him!

A delightful romance story in days of settling the west. Well told, the author, Marisa Masterson weaves a beautiful story of a romance between two people and how they combine two families into one. Masterson is detailed in her descriptions and builds connections between the characters and the listener. One can easily visualize the story and feel the raw emotions of jealousy, hate, love, and passion.

The narrator, Caroline Turner Cole gives a notable performance. Her cadence is smooth and steady. Her voice is pleasing and keeps the story moving along with her clear articulation and delivery.

SAMURAI: THE THREE SONS

by Timothy Levester McCallum
Narrated by: Ross Pipkin

Production by: Timothy Levester McCallum

Sons Defend Their Honor!

This is an action-packed story of three brothers from America fighting as samurai to win an important battle in a larger war that was full of epic battles, duels, and fights. In fact, this tale consists mainly of fight scenes that are strung together by a pretty weak story. We know our main characters are fighting to win a war but not why they should win or their beliefs in their own efforts. Just that they have a strong sibling bond. All the other characters lacked any reason for me to care about them. Furthermore, it seems as if a lot of Samurai knowledge needs to already exists in the listener’s mind. While the addition of magic into the story makes for interesting duels it still felt shoe-horned in. I hope future books in this series will flesh out the world as much as they did for these brothers. If you are a big fan of Samurai, then this will be an entertaining experience. Otherwise, this might not be the listen for you.

Ross Pipkin's narration starts off really rough. But as the book progresses, he finds his cadence. He performed his best work during the fighting scenes but felt lackluster the rest of the time. I hope in his next narration he won't hit the mic as much.

Editing and quality were on par with most books I have listened to.  The production on the other hand was not. The addition of random music from random genres (hip-hop, rock, Japanese) was unnecessary. Along with the chaotic insertion of Foley work I was taken out of the story every time.

SAWYER’S RUN
A (Mostly) Fictional Appalachian Trail Adventure)

by Lee Lovelace
Narrated by: Jack de Golia

Production by: Lee Lovelace

Review by T.C. White

Dangerous Hiking!

The adventure begins with a man and his dog planning on exploring the Appalachian Trail.  However, they encounter a Ranger who does not play by the rules.  Their only option is to stay off his radar if they want to live.

Sawyer’s Run is an awesome listen.  The author did a great job writing this tale full of emotion and thrills.  You are engulfed with the setting and get enough information to be knowledgeable about what is happening.  I personally am not usually a fan of hiking, but this is written and told in a way that grabbed me from the beginning and left me wanting more when it finished.  I look forward to hearing more from this author.

I was pleasantly surprised to see this narrated by Jack de Golia.  He did a great job narrating this story. I find his ability to use rich voices that command your attention helps keep the story moving along and keeping the attention of the listener.

Sea Paths
Book 1 of the Book of Bera Trilogy

by Suzie Wilde
Narrated by: Suzie Wilde

Production by: Suzie Wilde

Love and Resilience!

This story is set in the time of Vikings where famine, wars, doweries, and witchery/healings/harbingers.   Viking Bera is married off to another who lives in a distant and foreign place.  Her gift of sight and healing knowledge allow her to help her people survive.  That is if she can get past her stubbornness and thirst for revenge.

Bera’s struggle to fit in and face her past, present, and future is not only interesting but stirs the imagination into overdrive.  The author, Suzie Wilde, provides a rich, detailed description of everything – from scenery to activities to emotions to people.  Each character is fully developed and fits the story.  Wilde creates a world that is thoroughly developed and intricately described.

As the narrator, Wilde gives a solid performance.  Her voices are well done and different enough that the listener is able to keep them separate.  Her speech is clear, and smooth, and embodies each character well.

While the book ended with several pieces that must be finished, it is not a devastating cliffhanger.  While I look forward to the second in the series, the first ended in a good place.  Writing a trilogy is sometimes difficult to provide a satisfying end to each book.

SECRETS AND LIVES

by Marilyn Freeman
Narrated by: Virginia Ferguson

Production by: Marilyn Freeman

Some Secrets Are Deadly!

Secrets have a way of coming out and they don’t affect just one person but like a pebble tossed in water, there is a ripple. This ripple can cause devastating harm, or it could be the most wonderful occurrence ever. During the 1970’s Joan had to make a decision; she chose to put her firstborn son up for adoption and then move forward with her own life. That one fateful decision haunted her until her death … by murder! After her mother’s death, Sophie discovers she has the older brother she always wanted and goes in search of him. The story centers around the secrets and lives of each person in this tale of murder, loss, and life.

The author, Marilyn Freeman creates a tale that explores the effects of decisions, outcomes, and emotions that is realistic and rich in its messages. The son, Peter, is abandoned in his mind but in his mother’s mind, she gave him what she could not – a new life that she believed to be open to possibilities. As listeners, we are given a deep insight into the thoughts and emotions of Peter which result in some devastating and deadly outcomes. Freeman continues to weave the story around these emotions, and we see a change come over Peter as he embraces Sophie for his sister. We witness the depth of love and acceptance he has always longed for in his growing relationship with Sophie and her family.

The narrator, Virginia Ferguson brings this thriller to life. Her performance is rich and clear. She injects the right amount of emotion around the decisions and the unfolding drama. She brings the story to life through her talented voice and accents.

This is a well-done story that shows the depth of emotions and what they can do when one is abandoned and choices one makes.

SEE GLASS

by Ido Graf
Narrated by: Jarret Lemaster

Production by: Ido Graf

Espionage, Conspiracy, War and More!

This is a book of espionage, political conspiracy, war, and death. Two former Legionnaires meet at a tourist spot located off the Andalusian Bay. One a journalist and the other a sailor with special forces experience and training. Starting with WWII during Hitler’s reign and ending now, finding the hidden secret is vital as it will destroy political powers and lives. The journalist must decide whether the story is real or fake and whether to tell the story or not. Checking facts, he is determined to write the story that must be told. He cannot trust anyone as deceit flows throughout the chain of command everywhere.

The author, Ido Graf captures the attention of the listener and holds it from the first moment to the last. A rich thriller touching on political conspiracies, Espionage, Government, and more. The beginning occurs during WWII and Hitler’s reign and stretches over the course of decades. Each character is well-developed and suited to the story nicely. While Graf’s writing style is reminiscent of John Grisham and other well-known thriller writers, Graf’s storytelling is slightly different. The story moves slowly and deliberately building for plot twists and the final culminating moment.

The narrator, Jarret Lemaster gives a fine performance. His voices are rich and distinct allowing the listener to follow easily. He does not rush, and his cadence is perfectly matched to the story. His voices matched each character well.

Shade: The Complete Trilogy:
A Re-imaging of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein

by Merrie Destefano
Narrated by: Katherine Holt

A Story that Has It All!

Mary Wollstonecroft Godwin goes to Lord Byron’s home located in the Swiss Alps.  The party promises to cure her of her broken heart, but things are not as they seem, there are secrets and deadly consequences for anyone who does not follow the rules or who goes out and about after dark ...

Merrie Destefano, the author, wrote a captivating and beautiful retelling of Frankenstein and Dracula.  I was on the edge of my seat trying to figure out what would happen next, but I failed to do so.  This story has it all, drama, monsters, vampires, horror, and even a bit of romance to top us off.  This was a captivating story that tells a slightly darker side.

Destefano does a solid job of building on characters we are familiar with and creating new ones that blend in realistically.  The plot was well-done, and the plot twists were unique and mesmerizing.

As great as this horror story is, Katherine Holt did just as great with the narration.  She has a soft reading voice but fits this story very well.  She spoke clearly and with the perfect amount of emotion.  Her pacing was spot on as well.

Overall, this is a book that I could listen to again and a book that I highly recommend!

Shadow of Wolves

by J.R. White

There is never a dull moment in this western meets werewolf tale!

“A tortured gunfighter. A Navajo outcast. – And the Creature whose claws would stain the stones of the Mojave red.  Flush with raw silver and ruled by a baron with an iron fist, the tiny mining outpost of Shank’s Point is under siege by a sinister evil.”

This is a western-horror with such world building and character development that you feel you are there.  The story moves well, with plot twists that kept me wanting more.  I enjoyed learning about Kit Barker in pieces.  His story is tragic and very well told.  I love that The Life and Death of Peter Stubbe was built into this story; it was a nice, yet interesting touch.  The ending wraps up the story really well, but left me wanting more.  I hope to see more of Kit Barker in future books.

Micah Mason narrates this story wonderfully. He gives the characters their own voice.  He does a great job of helping to build up the scenes with increasing his tone and speed to match.

Overall, this was a great listening experience.

Shadows Among Us
Doctors of Darkness, Book 4

by Ellery A. Kane

Evil Is Just Outside …!

Like every parent, Mollie Roark tried to keep her daughter safe from the evil that lurks just outside her front door.  Like most parents, Mollie took her protection to the extreme fostering resentment and anger.  Then the unspeakable happens and now Mollie is searching for the Shadow Man that killed her daughter and left her burnt body as a reminder.  Mollie has lost everything – her marriage, job, security, home, and her daughter.  Hell-bent on revenge; Mollie turns over every stone – the elusive Shadow Man will pay for his crimes.

Ellery Kane, the author of Shadows Among Us, builds the suspense of the Shadow Man and the many heartbreaking discoveries that Mollie unearths in her search.  Kane tells the one story all parents dread – losing their child and finding out they were partly responsible by driving them to the secrecy of their actions that eventually result in their death.  She tells the story in a sensitive yet poignant style that elicits the heartfelt hurt and dread that one would expect to feel.  We get glimpses into the Shadow Man and it is frightening!

Kane is deliberate in her character building and scene-setting.  The dialog is realistic and thorough.  This is one of those rare audiobooks that once you start listening, you cannot stop.  You get caught up in the story and the details.

Kristin James, the narrator, is highly skilled at making subtle changes to her voice and tone thus providing distinctive voices that allow the listener to visually see each character and keep the story flowing smoothly. Her pace of speaking is punctuated appropriately with a variety of emotions – fear, loathing, love, sadness, etc.  I thoroughly enjoy listening to James perform.

Overall, this is an excellent book that engages the listener on different levels.  One cannot casually listen to this book as it is one of those rare books that will keep you up until you reach the end of the book.

SILENT SURVIVOR

by Deborah Shlian
Narrated by: Laura Wills Mooney

Production by: Deborah Shlian

Silence is NOT Golden!

Mackenzie Dodd has served in the military, suffers PTSD, is divorced, and now finds herself knee-deep in a mystery that may prove to be her end. Witnessing a veteran’s suicide, Mackenzie encourages other veterans with PTSD to discuss their experiences via her blog, “Silent Survivor.” After all, talking about things helps with the healing process. It also reveals secrets that some prefer to stay secret. Mackenzie makes some powerful enemies who want to see her dead!

The author, Deborah Shlian builds a mystery that has several plot twists and breath-taking moments. Her character development is well done as is the dialog. Her detailing of the emotional moments is perfectly done, it is not overboard or underdone. She walks a fine line balancing the story and the emotions this story might elicit.

The narrator, Laura Wills Mooney gives a quality performance with a steady rhythm and clear voice. She injects appropriate emotions throughout the performance. I enjoyed her performance.

Overall, the book is a good and interesting listen. I had a hard time shutting it off. I thought the premise of the story was intriguing and genuine.

SMOKEJUMPER SAGA

by John Crues
Narrated by: John Crues

Production by: John Crues

Firefighting Action and Adventure!

Smokejumper Saga is an action-packed novel set in the 1970s. Heather, as a four-year old girl who saw fire take her older brother, and Jack who has a familial tradition of firefighting, were bound to cross paths someday. Together they fight to become the best smokejumpers and US Forest Service firefighters they can be while discovering their growing relationship. Adversity comes in the form of fires, injuries, and the belief that women are better suited in the kitchen.

John Crues, the author, creates characters with depth and originality. The dialog and situations are realistic and keep the flow of the story moving at a steady pace. Each character, including the secondary ones, furthered the story highlighting between men and women, the fears of basically nosediving straight into a deadly situation, and more.

The narrator, also John Crues did a good job of narration. His cadence, clarity of speech, and voices only served to enhance the story.

This is one of those books that you don’t put down until the end. There were characters in this story that I could easily relate to as I too grew up in the 1970s. The feeling of women in men’s jobs was accurately portrayed by the author both in his writing and in his performance. An action-packed adventure for sure!

SOUL MATE SH*T

by Melissa Yvonne
Narrated by: L. Kennedy

Production by: Melissa Yvonne

Finding One’s Soul Mate!

Melissa didn’t know just how unhappy she was until she received a text message. The text message was from a man who proclaimed his interest in her and love. That would be fine except they are both married and now, Melissa is having a midlife crisis. Melissa must make a life journey and discover herself, her path, her meaning in life, and what love is worth fighting and living for. To add to the complex story, her search of what a soul mate is, brings her to another woman experiencing a similar fate years ago. Together, they must answer their own questions.

The author, Melissa Yvonne, takes her audience on a journey that is both painful, sensitive, and authentic. Yvonne engages her audience by smacking them hard with reality and the questions one oftentimes finds themselves asking.

The narrator, L. Kennedy, gives a strong performance with unique and versatile voices adding to the character's personality. Kennedy projects the pain, confusion, and other emotions prominently allowing the listener to become immersed.

This book is interesting; it is realistic and hits home for so many of us. Both, Yvonne and Kennedy, give life to a situation we have all experienced or will experience. It is interesting and well worth the lesson it offers.

Spider Season

by Billy Hanson

Review Written by W. D. Douglass

Anthology of Stories that Terrify!

As a representative of AudioBookReviewer.com here is a review on Spider Season written by Billy Hanson. This anthology is akin to episodes of the twilight zone. Except these tales pull no punches. From the first story to its last each twist is fresh. There is no plot armor. There are no favorites. And sometimes there are no happy endings. Every protagonist you will read about is on their own.

The narration was done by an ensemble cast. Each performer's unique voice helped to illustrate a defining line between each tale.

Editing, quality, and production were on par with most books I have listened to.  It was clear, no issue with sound or quality.

The author not only wrote and narrated this book but also directed, edited, and created the music in the background. But most importantly he did all these well.

Stitches in Time Travel

by Peter G. Reynolds
Narrated by: Sarah Cullum

Production by: Peter G. Reynolds

A Delightful and Fun Tale!

Charlotte is 10 years old, and her mothers have insisted she spends Christmas with her grandmother at her very old, very cold, and dusty home.  Spending Christmas Eve with her grandmother telling her yet another tale about when she was Charlotte’s age is wearing thin.  Determined to go to bed without adding a special square to the quilt or having to suffer through yet another tale, Charlotte goes off to bed.  Her grandmother wishes her a good night and hopes she is ready for the Angel of Hope when she comes to visit Charlotte.  Little did Charlotte know what adventures lay awaiting her underneath that very special quilt!

Charlotte’s time-traveling Christmas tale is nothing short of fascinating!  The author, Peter G. Reynolds, creates a wonderful world with warm feelings of love, hope, and kindness.  He smoothly creates the world that opens for Charlotte and each character that she encounters takes on a rich and vivid role in Charlotte’s life as she does in their lives

Sarah Cullum, the narrator, gives an excellent performance.  Her voice is smooth and full of vibrant, rich, and engaging emotions.  Her voice is soothing yet excited in places which adds to the depth of the story.

This is a sweet listen and one that your children would find entertaining.  The only issue was the shortness of the story; I would have enjoyed hearing more.  Unique, well created, and written, this is a story that will capture your heart and imagination!

SURVIVING THE THESEUS

by Randy Noble
Narrated by: Michelle Marie

Production by: Randy Noble

Fast-Paced Space Thriller!

Regina is a mercenary-for-hire type person but she’s on vacation, well, sorta. Taking a cruise aboard a huge spaceship itself should be exciting with a soothing and relaxing destination, however, things are never what they seem. Instead, Regina finds herself aboard a ship with only a few folks and piles and piles of clothing. People are disappearing at an alarming rate and an orange ball of light is hunting her. What she finds on board is literally out of this world!

The beginning of this book has a somewhat slow start that leaves one a little confused but clears up a little way into the book. When it clears up, it becomes a fast-paced book that keeps the action going. The author, Randy Noble, has a writing style that is relaxed and draws you in. Noble has a good handle on what makes a character likable and what doesn’t. Further, he provides descriptions that are rich and vivid.

The narrator, Michelle Marie, did a good job of narration. She spoke clearly and smoothly, providing the listener with the appropriate voice intonations for the action going on. Poised and calming, she gave a solid performance.

This is a good science-fiction thriller. The only downside of this book is that the ending is rather abrupt and unexpected.

SUSAN TAKI: THE NEW COVEN
THE HANGMAN UNIVERSE, BOOK 9

by Dee Rose
Narrated by: Jeremy Olivier

Production by: Dion D. Rosborough

Action-Packed Supernatural Tale!

Susan Taki faces a new challenge after she awakens from a magic-induced coma. Not only is she contemplating working for a vampire slayer, but now her old coven has a new leader who is gunning for her! Lots of action.

This book is the ninth in the series, and I have not read or heard any of the others prior. The story was easy to follow, the author gives enough background, so the listener is not lost. The plotline is good, and it is action-packed. It held my attention with the different plot twists and actions. The dialog is a bit rough – you can only say “suckka” so many times before it gets annoying.

Olivier did a great job of narration. He gave unique voices to each character. He kept the story flowing at a steady pace and spoke clearly.

If you enjoy stories involving the supernatural, peppered with adventure and action, then you will enjoy this book.

There were a couple of instances where the editing to the audio was not on par – there were some repeated sentences. Other than that, the production and quality were good.

TARO: Legend of Japan

by Blue Spruell
Narrated by: Steve Marvel

Production by: Out of the Blue Productions, LLC

The Tale of a Samurai Warrior!

Taro is a collection of Japanese folk tales combined and mixed with historical information woven carefully into one rich story of betrayal, trust, patience, and more.  Taro wants to become a Samauri but to do so he must prove himself through several trials and situations.  His faith and beliefs are pushed but the outcome is beautifully done.

I enjoyed the section on the mirror and broken promises as it was vividly described.  The conversations are smooth and convincing.     Blue Spruell, the author, does an excellent job of weaving a story out of several folk tales and blending them seamlessly.  The main characters are well-developed and strongly portrayed.  Spruell is graphic in his descriptions presenting to the listener a full story.

The narrator, Steve Marvel gives an impressive performance.  He is adept at unique voices allowing the listener to follow along easily.  Marvel speaks clearly and delivers a steady performance.  I have not had the pleasure of hearing him before but look forward to more.

This book is not just for young adults, older adults will enjoy it as well.  Taro is well-done and a good listen!

TERMINAL CASCADE

by Curt Samlaska
Narrated by: Kevin Clay

Production by: Curt Samlaska

Interesting and Deadly Thriller!

Lieutenant Colonel Eric West, head of the elite emergency doctors to the US military and other specific organizations within the US Government, has taken notice of some peculiar deaths that indicate GTViper is alive and has a deadly vendetta.  Having survived an assassination attempt, GTViper has set into motion a lethal toxin that will leave a wide path of death and destruction.  He is set on revenge for the death of his love and this time, no one will stand in his way.  Pitted against one another, it is a race against time to see who will win and who will lose.

The author, Curt Samlaska, provides an edge-of-your-seat thriller.  Samlaska takes his time building the situation, characters and ending.  We all want a bad guy – a villain but Samlaska takes that away from us and gives us the insight into the why of it all eliciting sympathy.  The listener is forced to decide who the true bad guy is.

The narrator, Kevin Clay, provides a rich experience for his listeners.  His voices are well done and with proper accents for each character.  Clay gives a strong performance with a cadence that allows the listener to delve deeply into the story.

The audio production and quality of this audiobook were ok.  There were some issues early on with some white noise. A little further in, I’m not sure the attempts of sound effects were really needed as the story and narrator were perfect for keeping the audience’s attention.

TERROR IN THE DESERT
A Comic Thriller

by Bruce T. Montgomery
Narrated by: Bruce T. Montgomery

Production by: Experience Yes Press

Suspense, Action, and Humor!

What do a Navajo Casino boss, a wastewater utility plant manager, and a gorgeous Sheriff’s Deputy have in common? A severed hand! David finds himself caught up in a deadly and highly immoral situation. He tries to extradite himself, but fate keeps throwing him back into the trenches!

The author, Bruce T. Montgomery builds a suspenseful story that keeps the listener entertained. As the story unfolds, each plot twist and character sets things into motion furthering the story. The characters are well-developed and unique to the storyline. The plot twists are well executed and keep the flow moving forward. Detailed in his descriptions, he draws the listener in even further. The moments of humor are well-placed and fun!

As the narrator, Bruce Montgomery gives a good performance. He interjects the appropriate emotions and pauses as needed. His narration is clear and smooth. Not every author can be a narrator, but in this case, it works!

This is an interesting story with lots of suspense and action with a dash or two of humor.

THE ADVENTURES OF FAWN
4 Book Series

‘Til the Last Snowflake Falls’
Book 1

by Al E. Boy

The Power of Love, Friendship and Christmas!

Til the Last Snowflake Falls, The Adventures of Fawn is a delightful adventure of Fawn, daughter to Comet and Vixen.  Yes, that very same Comet and Vixen of Santa’s Village!  As with most young ones, Fawn is easily bored and wants to have exciting and fun adventures.  To do that, she must sneak out of Santa’s Village.   Once outside she discovers new friends and new adventures await her.  Those adventures include a deadly menace that quickly threatens her and her friends and family.  If only she had listened to her mother and father!

Torn between obeying her parents and keeping her promises, Fawn struggles with the same choices all children struggle with daily.  The connection between friends is strong and sometimes one must make unfavorable choices in order to save others.   The author, Al E. Boy, accurately portrays the special bonds of friendship and love.

This is more than a coming-of-age story, it reflects the power of friendship and love. This is a book that children of all ages will find delightful and poignant.  Boy, captures the emotions, desires, and wants of children and young adults molding them into a witty and enjoyable story. The dialog was realistic as was the plot.

Boy develops each character adding to and strengthening the story.  The plot twist at the end was well-executed and creative.

This is one of those feel-good books that children and adults will want to hear time and again.  It is a new and unique Christmas story that is good year-round!

The narrator, Pam Tsujioka, performs the audiobook in a calming, soothing young voice with just the right amount of emotion and infectious excitement.  Her performance is highly skilled and enjoyable. I enjoyed her voice and the tone inflections she utilized; her performance made the book come to life.

Til the Last Snowflake Falls is a wonderful story of love, friendship, and courage.

The Ona Pendulum
Book 2

by AL E. Boy

Action-Packed with Lessons Learned!

This is an action-packed book in which Fawn and her friends discover a mystery that needs to be solved; Santa and others are acting differently at times – almost like “shorting out.”  It does not take long for Fawn, Santa, and others to figure out they must return to the beginning – when and where Kristoff Kringle became Santa to solve the mystery.  Once there, they discover the problem is the result of an evil princess seeking revenge and power for a past slight.  Throughout it all, lessons are learned, and friendships are made.  It is also delightfully creative in explaining how Santa came to be!

The author, Al E. Boy has written a strong story of love, patience, family, forgiveness, and the power of Christmas. The story has a solid foundation, and the plot twists happen almost naturally.  However, they are not expected!  Boy is vivid in his imagery with details, painting a picture with his words.  The dialog flows effortlessly from one character to the next, from one situation to the next.

Pamela Tsujioka, the narrator, once again provided a strong performance.  Each character has a different and unique voice making it easy to tell the characters apart.  I also enjoy hearing her performances as she slips into each one easily (at least it seems this way) and gives us a more in-depth feeling of each one.

This is a book for listeners of all ages to hear.  I enjoyed this series and look forward to more.

Far and Yet So Near
Book 3

by Al E. Boy

Fawn is Missing!

A mysterious stranger has put all the adult reindeer under his control, as one they walk away to an unknown location and fate.  Fawn, Mary, and her friends follow the reindeer and traverse the deadly Hangnail Pass and Wandering Bridge where some are injured.  The mysterious man in his attempts to steal the reindeer for profit blows up the cavern with Santa, Wajic, and the reindeer inside!  The man manages to steal Fawn and takes her to his home in London where she befriends his terminally ill daughter and brow-beaten wife.  It is up to Fawn to save herself and her new friends.  Back home, her friends Bunny, White, Snowboy, and others pray for her safe return.

With Santa, Wajic, and the reindeer believed to be dead, Fawn is at a loss as to what will happen to her or Christmas.  Like a true and loving reindeer, Fawn is determined to help her new friends and introduce the man to the meaning of Christmas and love!

Al E. Boy once again captures the imagination of his listeners and holds it from beginning to end in a breathtaking adventure.  His story is well-developed highlighting thoughts, emotions, and questions that many young adults face daily.  Boy shows that forgiveness, kindness, and love can overcome so much and be life-changing.  He is a masterful wordsmith as his descriptions bring the characters, plot, and emotions to life.

Pam Tsujoika, the narrator, provides a unique voice and cadence to each character which allows the listener to keep focused and clear on who is who.  Her voice is soothing as is her cadence.  Her voice is rich in tone and injected with the right amount of emotion.

A delightful audiobook that any age would enjoy thoroughly.

The Sun Pillar
Book 4

by Al E. Boy

Adventure and Pure of Heart!

Having returned from her latest adventure, Fawn is anticipating her first Christmas of 1849. The only problem is Santa, Mary, Wajic, and her parents and other reindeer are in danger! If they land the sleigh, they will simply be no more! It is up to Fawn and Fawn alone to save the day. To extinguish the Sun Pillar, Fawn must be pure of heart and have an unblemished soul. Her struggle to defeat the evil that is trying to destroy Christmas and Santa forever may be more than she can handle. Their fate lies in her untarnished love and faith. Hopefully, her first Christmas will not be her last!

Al E. Boy, the author, takes many instances that young people face and turns them into a lesson that is captivating and moving. Faced with several instances of misbehaving and disobeying her parents, Fawn questions her abilities and her moral fiber not realizing that those examples are being exaggerated and manipulated to trick her. We all question ourselves time and time again, but Boy takes it to a new level and demonstrates that love can overcome evil. Further, he shows that while friends can grow additional interests, friendship does not die.

Boy introduces new characters with each book in this series; he does so in a methodical manner that allows the listener to see growth and substance. His descriptions are vivid, and his dialogs are realistic. Together they move the story forward flawlessly. Living at the North Pole is very adventuresome and exciting!

Pam Tsujioka as the narrator is delightful. She has performed each book in the series and has done an excellent job of maintaining unique and clear voices for each character. Her voice is almost musical as she moves from one character to the next.

I highly recommend this book for listeners of all ages.

THE ANGELS OF RESISTANCE

by David V. Mammina
Narrated by: Russell Archey

Production by: I’m Hearing Stories

Epic Thriller with Angels, Demons, and Family!

Michael Miuriell, a man with mystical powers warns others he encounters of the impending demonic army that is coming for them. Michael unites those in the area under different leaderships and brings them together to defeat the demon army. Faced with devastatingly evil creatures, Michael fights to save and rescue those swallowed up by the evil demons and the darkness.

The author, David V. Mammina spins a tale that is both epic and captivating. Mammina shapes each character with unique characteristics and personalities that fit the story perfectly. Each plot twist is well planned to leave the listener wide-eyed in suspense up until the last words are spoken. The story flows smoothly with a few slow places but those are needed to build up the next round of suspense and twists.

The narrator, Russell Archey gives a solid performance keeping the rhythm moving at a steady clip and interjecting the appropriate amount of emotion and modulation. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing this performance by Archey, it was my first.

This is an epic novel in both length and content. This book is a masterful storytelling event that both Mammina and Archey accomplished skillfully.

THE BETWEEN

by Ryan Leslie
Narrated by: Geoff Sturtevant

Production by: The Parliament House

Real-Life Dragons & Dungeon Like Adventure!

This book has the feel of a role-playing game where the player assumes different roles, wins artifacts, and such to move on to the next level.  The author, Ryan Leslie does an excellent job of setting the stage and then building on it from page one.  Every aspect of this story from the dialog, character development, and the unfolding of the plot was well planned and accomplished.    One does not need to be a fan of role-playing games or stories to be drawn into this … rather a highly inquisitive person who wants answers.

Leslie’s writing style is unique and highly descriptive.  While the first chapter held little promise of excitement or terror, this book quickly moves into a nightmarish world that seems to play on everyone’s weak points or terrors.  At one point or another, the listener will feel their heartbeat just a tad bit quicker – whether it is being underground, being lost, seeing one’s nightmare, or any other terrifying fear – there is something for everyone.

The narrator, Geoff Sturtevant, provides an entertaining performance projecting the fear, confusion, and a host of other emotions.  He captures and projects the mood of each character and situation well.  He speaks clearly and with an energy that keeps the story moving at a quick pace.

The ending threw me a tad bit … I was so NOT expecting it!  Well done, Ryan Leslie, well done!

Whether you are into gaming or just enjoy horror, this is a solid listen that should not be missed!

THE BITCOIN GAMBIT
JR Johnson, Book 2

by Author Jim Flynn
Narrated by: Gary Williams

Production by: James Flynn

Johnson is Back!

J.R. Johnson is back and is looking to invest in Bitcoin.  However, the US Cyber Command, the Russian FSB, and a couple of murdering assassins have different thoughts regarding Johnson.  Playing the “useful idiot” Johnson finds himself embroiled in a dangerous cat-and-mouse game, he just needs to figure out the ground rules before the target on his back gets him wasted!

This was an action-packed, fast-paced novel that leaves the listener on the edge of their seat.  It picks up with most of the same characters as the first book in this series and the author, Jim Flynn continues to build the characters more deeply.  One cannot help but love Johnson and laugh at some of the antics and situations he finds himself caught up in.

The narrator, Gary Williams, does a magnificent job of capturing the personality and character of each. He injected the appropriate amount of passion, fear, and more with each passing second.  I found Williams engaging and his unique voices for the characters were spot-on. He speaks smoothly; he speaks with a consistent cadence.

I thoroughly enjoy the series and look forward to seeing what other trouble Johnson finds himself in.

THE BLUE CANTINA

by Christopher Whedon
Narrated by: Robert Nieman

Production by: Children’s Telepathic Workshop

Short Yet Powerful!

Finding freedom on the back of an old Indian motorcycle traveling wherever the road takes you would be enticing. However, the protagonist has always been free to do this and more as he was a member of the Hell’s Angels before he was diagnosed with Huntington’s Disease with just a few years left to live. However, his time may be shorter than he realizes as he stumbles upon the Blue Cantina and nothing is as it seems.

This was a very short story of one man’s travel toward death or perhaps an attempt to escape it. Either way, the story gives a powerful message of death and life. The author, Christopher Whedon creates a story around a genetic and fatal disease. As the listener, he gives us a small glimpse into what can happen and one way of dealing with it. Whedon gives just enough to spur on the imagination of the listener while the character takes it all in stride.

The narrator, Robert Nieman gives a solid performance with a voice that is unique to the character. He speaks clearly and with a steady rhythm. When the character is confused or experiencing a symptom of the disease, the narrator projects that well.

The only downside to this book is how short it was, I would have enjoyed hearing more of the journey.

THE CRIMINALIST
A Novel of Forensic Science Suspense

by John Houde
Narrated by: Kathleen Gati

Drugs, Murder and Fantasy!

A forensic scientist, Paul Connert, contemplates crossing the line, he even goes so far as to play out his plan but then almost gets fingered for a murder. Vika is looking for her heroin-addicted sister and meets Paul (aka forensic scientist), together they try to find her sister. Mix in sex trafficker, a crooked cop and a slew of other investigators and you have a fairly intense suspense crime story.

John Houde, the author, does a solid job of building characters and methodically setting the stage for the storyline. A few twists keep the suspense going and the dialog is convincing and credible.

The narrator, Kathleen Gati gives an attentive performance providing each character with a voice that enhances them. Her cadence and pronunciation of the Russian words were spot-on. I found her voice to be soothing yet strong. If you enjoy crime drama & suspense, this is a good one to hear!

THE DAUGHTER OF THE SEA AND THE SKY

by David Litwack
Narrated by: Sarah Zimmerman

Production by: Evolved Publishing LLC

Entertaining and Thought-Provoking!

A nine-year-old Kailani crashes on the Island Blessed Lands where she encounters Jason and Helena. Jason and Helena were childhood friends and now reunited, have become reconnected. The ruling authority of the Blessed Lands dictates a severe and ruthless belief that fanatics and religion have no place there. The consequences for anyone arriving on the island uninvited are severe and limited. Kailani is unique, given her age and her words, no one knows what to do with her or what threat she presents. Jason and Helena have decided they will do whatever they must to protect young Kailani. They will face many obstacles and encounter hate and lies and their renewed connection with one another is jeopardized.

David Litwack, the author, delivers an exciting book with many poignant moments in which the listener cannot help but delve into their own beliefs and tolerances. Weaving a powerful story, Litwack challenges you to consider what is truth supported through faith, and what is a lie supported out of fear and ignorance. His tool for telling this story is a nine-year-old girl who mesmerizes with her questions and innocence. Litwack creates characters that are well defined and have a depth that enriches the story. Each plot twist is well executed and leaves the listener wanting more.

The narrator, Sarah Zimmerman gives a strong performance. The voices are unique for each character making the story even easier to follow. Her tone sets the stage, and she delivers inflections that are appropriate to the story. Her cadence was smooth and rhythmic accordingly.

Overall, this is one of those rare books that is both entertaining and thought-provoking.

The Death of Hercules: A DocuNovel

by Daniel Yarosh
Narrated by: Daniel Yarosh

Production by: Daniel Yarosh

Review by: T. C. White

Murder, Deceit, Revolution, and More!

Lots of historical happenings in November 1918 with the end of WWI, the spread of the Spanish flu, and more. Max Shertok, a former US Army Private, tries to rescue his parents from a civil war in Russia. Along the way, he meets renegades from the Bolshevik Revolution, murder, deceit, betrayal, and more. This story is based on real people and stories from this chaotic time with some creative license.

The story starts right away with this one. We do get the background and setting, but then right into the story, we go. My interest was kept throughout this historical fiction novel and the story advanced nicely. I do not know everything about the history regarding this era, but the fact-checking seemed to check out. Regardless of historical facts, take a few hours and listen to the story, you will not be disappointed.

Daniel Yarosh narrates this well. This was a basic reading which kept me engaged in the story. It might have been more entertaining if the narration had been more engaging with voice fluctuations and inflections.

Overall, this was an interesting book. Not my typical go-to book, but one I am glad to have taken the time to hear.

The DEVIL PULLS THE STRINGS

by J. W. Zarek
Narrated by: Curt Bonnem

Production by: Arthor’s Republic

The Devil is in the Title!

Boone Daniels is drawn into a fantastic adventure because of a heartfelt promise he made to a friend and the fact he almost killed that same friend! To deliver on his promise, Boone must travel great lengths and time to capture a cursed melody. He encounters murder, members of secret societies, mythical creatures, vampires, an immortal, and a creature from his past.

The author, J.W. Zarek, has written a truly riveting tale. His writing style is engaging, rich with details, and fully developed characters. Zarek’s writing style is smooth and clean. He is adept at weaving plot twists that are not only well-executed but leave the listener wide-eyed.

The narrator, Curt Bonnem delivers an excellent performance. His unique voice talent portrays each character and their personality to a T. He delivers with confidence and with a smoothness that enhances the story and keeps it moving forward.

The sound quality of the book could have been better. I am not a fan of sound effects as they get in the way of the story, in my opinion. However, when you not only have the sound effects AND the narrator making pretty much the same sounds it becomes annoying. I do not believe this was intentional but in listening to it through Author’s Direct this was an issue. I suspect the soundtrack was added afterward. The music however was splendid and haunting! This part I truly appreciated, and it added to the story as well. The sound and production quality were fine with the exceptions mentioned previously.

THE ESSENCE OF DECAY

by Steven Bliss
Narrated by: Zac Aleman

Production by: Steven Bliss

Deeply Moving Thriller!

Life and politics never seem to blend well. For Coretheen, she must not only deal with the loss of her family but also maneuvering the political world without stepping on toes. She must look deep within herself, see who she is and whether she can continue to balance her reality with that of Ashling.

To benefit and fully appreciate the story that Steven Bliss is weaving, one must pay attention or miss something! This is a book that has depth and requires that the listener be focused. Bliss carefully weaves the story and builds the characters with equal depth. Regardless, this is not a story one will forget easily or quickly. It will haunt the listener long afterward.

The narrator, Zac Aleman gives a solid performance. His voice is smooth and clear. Each character has a different voice. His performance is strong and professional, he interjects enough emotion to draw the listener in and keep them interested.

This is a book that encourages strength and introspection. The title of the book itself promises a lot and the author delivers!

THE EXODUS

by David Fairchild
Narrated by: Jacqueline Rendell

Production by: Four Doors Publishing LLC

A New World - Be Kind or Else!

This is a story about people identified as “undesirables” or “different.”  What happens when the United States deems them as unacceptable – too old, mentally different, or vocally opposed to the current government?  The world is run by the elitists who keep the “undesirables” down and keep the remaining people oppressed in one manner or another.

Add in a Cartel run by Salvo; the underground cities where everyone deemed unfit elsewhere are eagerly welcomed and given a place to succeed provided, they are honest and upfront.  There is no room for bullies, thieves, or liars.   Mix in two young girls with a mission – finding their mothers in the underground cities regardless of whom they must kill to get there.

The author, David Fairchild, does an excellent job of creating characters that fit perfectly into this world.  He methodically builds each character and situation giving the listener a front-row seat throughout the story.  I have to say, he had my attention in less than 90 seconds into the story.  I had to keep listening to hear where he was going to take me.  This book is a truly action-packed story.

This is an epic-length story that is packed full of action, intrigue, and nail-biting moments.  I loved how Fairchild would constantly build different situations for each character enhancing the plot only to throw in a twist at the last minute that was out of the blue but perfect! Let’s just say … keep the marbles away from your children if you happen to upset them!  Fairchild is very creative!

The narrator, Jacqueline Rendell, is perfect for this book.  She gives a performance that allows the listener to keep the characters straight, gives each character their unique voice, and builds on their attitudes/personalities.  She speaks smoothly and with the right amount of inflection.

Overall, this is one of those rare books that will keep you on the edge of your chair and give you moments of introspection.  You will not be able to put this audiobook down.

The FORSAKEN: “THE CHRIST PROJECT”
Book 1

by Donald Allen Kirch
Narrated by: Kathryn LaPlante

Production by: Donald Allen Kirch

The Second Coming!

A global war against religion has left all religions outlawed – praying, crossing oneself, saying “God”, or even using common phases that refer to God can result in a painful death or imprisonment. The day comes when an ex-bishop of the Catholic Church and who is also a former scientist returns to the Vatican and proceeds to move forward with The Christ Project – a project that will bring God back. He steals the “Shroud of Turin” and proceeds to Jerusalem. He has the military forces and others who want to see him fail, hot on his trail. The question is, can Marcelis do it? Can he bring God back?

Donald Allen Kirch, the author, is methodical in his world-building where God has been outlawed. As with all Kirch’s stories, character development is pivotal and well-done. The dialog and forward movement of the story is deliberate with rich details. The listener can see each character from Leonardo to Noah to the King to Susan.

This is a unique book as it contains a combination of different genres within the storyline. A masterful storyteller, Kirch takes listeners on a thrill-a-minute tale. Slow-moving at first, Kirch builds momentum until the listener finds themselves on the edge of their chair. This is one of those books that come back to you and haunts you with “what if.”

Kathryn LaPlante, the narrator, gives a solid performance providing a unique voice for each character. LaPlante speaks clearly and with a smooth cadence punctuated with the right amount of emotion. Her voice is pleasant to hear.

I am looking forward to Book 2, I want to hear where this author’s mind takes me next!

There were no issues with the production or quality of this audiobook.

THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH
Stories from the Free City, Book 1

by Nathaniel Warner
Narrated by: Scott Ellis, Kay Insley

Production by: Nathaniel Warner

Unique Take on The Fountain of Youth!

This is a story about Jack and Blue, an engaged couple, who joined the military after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Blue was a nurse and Jack was a member of the Marines. Unfortunately, they are attacked while on a ship being transported to their next stop. Along with four others who survived the massive attack and deadly sinking of their ship, they wind up on an island with Islanders, surviving Japanese soldiers, and another mysterious presence. The interaction between the now residents of the island is both exciting and danger-filled.

The author, Nathaniel Warner is a masterful storyteller crafting a unique story around WWII and the Fountain of Youth. His descriptions were rich in detail and character building was as well. This action-packed adventure was intriguing in many ways. I didn’t want to shut off the book until I reached the end. Warner crafts some mind-blowing plot twists that he manages to execute smoothly.

There were two narrators, Scott Ellis and Kay Insley. I enjoyed Scott Ellis’s performance as he moved the story forward with appropriate inflections and a clear voice. Kay Insley did not have as big a role and I found her short exchanges out of place; I think her voice seemed larger than Ellis’ at times. When she had several lines to speak and longer interactions, her performance felt right. Overall, I have heard both before and I have enjoyed them both.

This is a story for anyone who enjoys WWII, battles, and survival books mixed with some other pieces that I will not reveal here to keep from spoiling the book. This is one of those “don’t miss” books. Plus the bonus of a unique thought on the Fountain of Youth.

The Golden Room

by Irving Wallace
Narrated by: Robert Ferraro

Everly Yours Revealed!

Irving Wallace, the author, does a great job of combining history with fiction surrounding Chicago and some of its most notorious citizens.  This story is particularly focused on the visit of Prince Henry of Prussia to the Everleigh House making his presence far more important to their livelihood than in real life.  The two sisters that created and ran this famous elite and exclusive gentleman’s club is vividly described and developed into being less self-centered than most businessmen are known to be when faced with adversity.  However, bringing in the serial killer, Dr. Holmes was a stroke of genius on Wallace’s part.  Blending the two non-related incidents into connected occurrences was well done.

Wallace takes his time building each character fully and guiding the listener into seeing both sides of each character – for example, the sisters are running a house of prostitution, yet they are sensitive and fall victim to politics and the media until they have the opportunity to be magnanimous and save the Everleigh and their niece’s wedding plans.

Wallace brings in suspense, thrills, romance, politics, murder, and more into one story.  This book has it all.  It is well-done, with gasp-inducing moments.  While he does take some liberty with the timing of different events, one can easily overlook this as the book is gripping and rich in its creative content.

The narrator, Robert Ferraro, gives a solid performance by giving life to the characters in a manner that is rich and evocative.  His narration flows smoothly and easily as he provides a unique voice to each character allowing the listener to follow the story.  His timing is instinctual, and he gives a convincing performance for each character.

The cover is a bit misleading as it does not represent the early 1900’s time period, so if you purchase a book by its cover as I am want to do; don’t.  This book is much better than the cover implies.  The time of this book is a bit unsettling as one cannot tell if it is set in the late 1800s or early 1900s and the cover contributes to this confusion.  Regardless, this is a good solid book with a solid performer.

THE HOPE STORE

by Dwight Okita

Installing Hope!

Imagine a world without hope.  No matter what you do, you cannot find hope within yourself.  Two men, entrepreneurs, create a solution that can only be found at the Hope Store – they install hope, not instill it!

Jada, a friend of one of the men purchases an installment of hope and the complications begin!  As a “super-responder” with a hidden agenda, Jada complicates things a bit for the two owners.  Factor in a secret or two the owners have, the activist group “The Natural Hopers”, and the plot thickens.

This was an enjoyable book except for the music – but then again, I despise having music played during an audiobook as it tends to interfere with the words being spoken and my taste in music is not commonly connected to audiobooks.  The music was, however, very appropriate for the storyline.

The book is unique and raises many different issues, which is what makes a book interesting and good!  A few of the issues include is installing hope into a person playing God? Is this ethical? What is the value of friendship and relationships?  Can a secret or a lie be undone?  There are many other issues that this book could provoke for good and enriching discussions.

The character development and plot twists were interesting and complete. The story is well told, the dialog is stimulating, and the narration performance given by the author Dwight Okita was well done.  It was a soothing book highlighted by his rich voice.

THE HORROR OF SUPERVILLAINY
The Supervillainy Saga, Book 7

by C.T. Phipps
Narrated by: Jeffrey Kafer

To Be a Superhero or Supervillain!

What do you do when you want to be a superhero, but you suck at it?  Gary Karkofsky, better known as Merciless, the Supervillain without Mercy decides he would be better off as a superhero instead of a villain.  His life is a mess – no one wants to be rescued by him, not even his friends or family!  However, everything goes into a tailspin when he is asked to save the President’s daughter by none other than a Raven – yes, a Raven, as in a talking bird!  Although Merciless is smart, will he figure out the treachery behind this situation?  He is aided by friends who are angry with him (he banished them elsewhere) but they come together to defeat …

I love this series!  CT Phipps, the author, does a stunning job of creating dialog between the characters and between Gary himself – I love hearing the internal conversations that Gary (aka Merciless) has with himself.  The pop culture references are fun as I try to figure out where they come from and catch the slightly twisted reference meanings and how they fit with the situation.  I enjoy Jane, the Weredeer immensely as well as Agent G.  I enjoy the situations that Gary finds himself in and the crazy roundabout ways he gets himself out of them!

Phipps is methodical in his dialog and setting the twists.  He brings in characters from his other worlds and makes them relevant to the situation.  He excels at world-building as well as character and plot building.  Further, he gives the listener some food for thought – specifically the value of family and forgiveness.

Jeffrey Kafer is the narrator who gives a top-notch performance.  I am not sure how Kafer gets through some of the dialog out without laughing.  Through his voice alone, he can project the self-assuredness and cockiness of Gary, the righteous anger of Diablo man, and the puns from Jane the Weredeer!  The listener can see these actions clearly through the writing of Phipps and the performance of Kafer.

If you need a laugh mixed with some suspense and fun – don’t miss this book.

NOTE:  This book is awarded the AudioBookReviewer Choice Award for this book as it deserves a much higher than a 5-star ranking!

THE KING OF ELFLAND’S DAUGTHER

by Lord Dunsany
Narrated by: Malk Williams

Production by: Spoken Realms

Magical World!

Alveric seeks out Lirazel, the daughter of the King of Elfland to marry her and enrich his kingdom. As he enters the magical realm of Elfland, he encounters magical and amazing creatures and, of course, Lirazel. Marriage will not be easy as life amongst humans is challenging for her, in the end, she flees back home. Alveric must reclaim his true love and unite both worlds.

As a well-known classic, the author, Lord Dunsany writes a captivating story. He captures the imagination of his audience and runs with it.

The narrator, Malk Williams, adds to the captivating story with his smooth voice skills and his unique voices to reflect the personality of each character. Williams is attuned to tone and pitch using both successfully, adding to the story and excitement. I enjoy hearing Malk Williams’ performances as they are always well done and reflect the action within the story. His voice is clear, and he maintains a steady cadence from beginning to end. A true storyteller!

THE LAST ENGINEER
Dark World, Book 1

by Russell E. Van Dyke
Narrated by: Peter Leppard

Review by W. D. Douglass

Marooned Aliens with Special Abilities!

This is a story about marooned aliens who have lived through humanity’s recorded history and their inner faction struggle to protect humanity or return home which could spell destruction for earth. These aliens have a unique combination of aspects from vampire, werewolf, and superman lore. For the first in a series, this book focuses mainly on character and world-building. While only giving us small bites of conflict to keep the story moving. All this is acceptable and well done for the beginning of a multi-book series but not for a standalone read. This is an entertaining read, but the true conflict makes no sense to me. Why return to your home planet far across the universe 8,900 years later? The risk to reward ratio does not make sense. If you go back to the home planet, everyone you ever knew would be dead, the political body most likely has been overthrown, and the planet might not even exist. Were as you remain on earth and have power, wealth, and magic powers? Keeping that in mind the character's relatability, realism, and interactions will have me reading the next book in this series.

The narration by Peter Leppard was skillful and flawless. He shows his voice acting skills by conveying the characters' emotions perfectly. The only shortcoming this performance has is the lack of spacing in between scenes mid-chapter.

THE LAST TRAIN
Detective Hiroshi, Volume 1

by Michael Pronko
Narrated by: Peter Berkrot

Production by: Raked Gravel Press

Mystery & Murder in Tokyo!

Detective Hiroshi finds himself going head-to-head with an ex-hostess who has murdered an American businessman and who may have designs on killing him as well. Hiroshi discovers that money not only talks but kills. The desire for money goes much deeper into the sordid underbelly of Tokyo as many are eager to sell their souls for a bit of it. Hiroshi, having led a sheltered life, quickly discovers the dangers he is about to face and that not everything is as it seems. Sometimes a death is more than it appears.

The author, Michael Pronko takes an average mystery and turns it into much more. Slow and deliberate, Pronko creates the mystery and characters weaving a careful story. It is obvious that Pronko knows Japan and its culture well and this was an added benefit to the story. The characters were well-developed although a few of them bore some basic stereotyped characteristics. Although you knew who the murderess was, it was a game of “catch me if you can” which made the story more intriguing.

The narrator, Peter Berkrot, did a noteworthy job of portraying the characters. His voice was clear, and his cadence was smooth and steady. I have not had the pleasure of hearing Berkrot before but I thoroughly enjoyed his performance.

A solid mystery with lots of added visuals through the author’s use of rich and vivid details. I am interested in seeing how Detective Hiroshi grows throughout the series.

THE LAZARUS CURIOSITY
Steam, Smoke and Mirrors, Book 2

by Colin Edmonds

Misdirection, Supernatural and Sleight of Hand!

The Lazarus Curiosity is a steampunk thriller in which Music Hall magicians are called in to solve the crimes that the famed Scotland Yard detectives cannot!  Michael Magister and Phoebe Le Breton are intelligent, sleight of hand, and misdirection experts who love puzzles.  Although the crimes they are called in to solve are not only enigmatic but could be deadly to them!   The storyline is smooth, progresses at a good pace, and with the double-edged humor, it is intriguing and thrilling.

The author, Colin Edmonds, has done an excellent job of building the storyline, plot twists, and character building.  Although I did not read the other books, I was able to discern what was going on and found myself enthralled in the world of magic, supernatural, and mystery.  The Black Bishop … I have to say he was terrifying!

The narrator, Karl Jenkinson performed the book flawlessly with a rhythm and cadence that kept you on the seat of your chair.  His voices were perfectly matched to the character – Michael’s was charismatic and persuasive while Phoebe’s was thoughtful and classy.  Jenkinson slipped into each character as if it were a second skin and performed the book expertly.

This is one of those rare books that transport the listener into the world of steampunk effortlessly.  I highly recommend this book/series to anyone who enjoys magic, sci-fi steampunk, and mystery!

THE MACHINE MURDERS
Island Buoys

by CJ Abazis
Narrated by: David Foley

Production by: Publisto Ltd

Review by W.D. Douglass

Murder Solved by a Data Scientist!

The Machine Murders is a story that seems like a precursor to Philip K. Dick's "thought crime police". The main story of the murders was solidly written. The author does a great job setting the scene and moving the story along during these parts. However, the big drawback for me was how the author overly and repeatedly describes the mechanics of solving a crime by using only data, over and over again. I did not like all the overuse of brand names, like Instagram, iPhone, Twitter, etc. It really dates the book, making it harder to come back to in future reads or for new readers in years to come. The love triangle the main character is involved in felt shoehorned and didn't really add to the story. The huge chunks of the book focusing on bureaucracy, redundancy, and the impacts of using data from our social media footprints to solve a crime took all the fun out of the story.

David Foley did a spectacular job narrating this audiobook. He brought this book to life. Constant character voices, conveying emotions, you name it he nailed it.

THE MECHANICAL MAGISTRATE

by Greg Hansen

Review by W. D. Douglass

Fresh and Entertaining Sci-Fi!

As a representative of AudioBookReviewer.com here is a review on The mechanical magistrate written by Greg Hanson. This storybook is concentrated entertainment. In less than two hours you are taken into a post apoc setting where the world was so well built and the plot so fresh you won't want it to end. This author will not waste your time. Needing a quick sci-fi fix? This is the book for you.

Character development was spot on. The story flowed smoothly and cleanly.

The narration by Alan Bruun was also fantastic. While managing to give each character a unique feel, he consistently conveyed their emotions. His voice was clear and fresh. His energy kept the book flowing smoothly. This is my new favorite book to have reviewed!

THE NINTH SESSION

by Author Deborah Serani
Narrated by: Deborah Serani

Production by: TouchPoint Press

Action-Packed, Creepy with Lots of Mystery!

Dr. Alicia Reese is struggling to start again after her husband passes away. Going back into practice, she takes on a new patient, Lucas Ferro. Ferro struggles with crippling anxiety and what he reveals puts Dr. Reese on edge and forcing her to put her ethics into question. Faced with the death of a neighbor girl, the creepiness of Ferro, and more – Dr. Reese draws a line in the sand and the suspense takes off full tilt!

The author, Deborah Serani does a great job of building the main characters, authentic dialog, and more than enough suspense to keep the listener on the edge of their chair. The plot and twists were perfectly executed. The plot twists were not expected!

As the narrator as well, Deborah Serani, gives a solid performance. Her delivery is smooth, rhythmic and gives the right amount of emotional feel to the story. I look forward to hearing more from Deborah Serani! I enjoyed how she tied everything up.

There were no issues with the production or quality of this audiobook. However, I will say I am not a fan of sound effects, and the sound of pencil scratching was slightly annoying.

THE OUTLANDS

by Tyler Edwards
Narrated by: Robert Grindley

Production by: Tyler Edwards

Review by W.D. Douglass

Great World-Building and Twists!

The Outlands was written by Tyler Edwards and narrated by Robert Grindley. This young adult dystopian adventure is a suitable listen for its genre. I found it to be comparable to the more notable hallmarks of the YA genre. I.e., Hunger Games and Divergent. With great world-building and a surprise ending to make it all worth wild this is a good read. Where it fell short in my opinion was the characters. They seemed flat with cookie-cutter personalities. But with this being the first book in the series there is still time to see the characters grow and break through the troupes of their current existence.

The narration by Robert Grindley was the same as the writing. Solid but not compelling. Unfortunately, the only thing that made an impact on me was that his pronunciations of certain words were very different from any other narrator I have listened to.

THE QUEST FOR THE PHOENIX CROWN
A Secret Adventure in the Land of Kalos

by Author Xander T. Petersen
Narrated by: Ross Destiche

Production by: Xander T. Petersen

Review by D. Douglass

Entertaining Fantasy!

The Quest for the Phoenix Crown written by Xander T. Petersen is a quick hitter of a fantasy adventure. Though it is a quick tale, it's a fun tale. With gnomes, faeries, goblins, and plenty of adventure. This story will keep you entertained throughout. The writer was able to tell an original story while still including some hallmarks of wider known fantasy tales. With a cliffhanger-like ending, it hints there might be more stories in this universe to come. At least I hope so!!

Ross Destiche's performance was well done. He was able to overcome the poor sound quality of the audiobook and keep me entertained. Some of his voices were a bit over the top and while I didn't mind, other listeners might.

THE QUEST FOR THE WIZARD’S RING

by Robert Valle

An Excellent Adventure!

This is an exciting tale of two brothers – one is a mage and the other is a skilled warrior – both are caught in a fierce struggle with a dark lord and his army.  Together, the two brothers must find a way to defeat the dark lord and save their village.  The young mage, Chaant, along with a mysterious woman who has just as mysterious powers seek out a powerful enchantment in which to help defeat the dark lord.  Ky’el slips under the wall with other warriors to try to eliminate as many of the dark lords’ army as possible.

Filled with magic, mystery, and adventure this is one of those rare audiobooks that will capture the listeners’ imagination.  Just when you think the end is near, the author, Robert Valle, throws in a twist.  The plot flows smoothly, and the plot twists are well done.

Each character is well developed fits perfectly into the story.  The dialog is well developed and authentic.  I enjoyed the dialog between Chaant and Anjelica as they learn about her mysterious powers.  Plus, I enjoyed seeing how thoughtful and sensitive Chaant was at the end.  Chaant’s growth as a character is very clear and indicative of his nature in the book.  The same can be said of Ky’el’s growth.

The narrator, Luke deMaine gave a solid performance.  His voices were clear and representative of each character’s personality.  He was articulate and clear with a cadence that drew the listener in.  I have not had the pleasure of hearing deMaine before but look forward to more of his performances.

This is a creative book filled with suspenseful moments and well-written.  I look forward to the next book!

The Quotis Gene: The Link

by Jonathan Williams

Narrated by Mapuana Makia

A Gene With Survival Mode!

Once upon a time, there was a race from another world that came to earth and began to colonize it.  A short time later these visitors on Earth fell victim to wimps of the Galaxy and were eliminated – kind of.  Then it is discovered that there are two humans with the Quotis gene that have come together and formed the first Quotis on Earth.  It is not afterward that more with the same Quotis gene comes together as well.  What seems to be a serendipitous occurrence is actually the Quotis gene that brings them all together because it has its own plan.  The fun starts!

The story was creative and fresh.  Jonathan Williams, the author, did a good job of building the story and keeping the listeners attention.  The story flowed smoothly, and plot twists were well done.  Williams took his time and built strong characters that encouraged the listener to connect with them throughout the book. The storyline flowed well making the story easy to follow.    The ending was well-done, and I look forward to book 2!

The narrator Mapuana Makia gave a good performance, the words were clearly spoken and with the right amount of interjection.  Furthermore, the rhythm of the narration was steady and consistent.  I thought the words flowed easily.

THE RAISIN & THE GRAPE

by Author Lary Alan Threadgill
Narrated by: Felicia Johnson, Lary Alan

Production by: Threadbooks

Raisins VS Grapes, Learning Equity, Love, and more!

This is a short and novel approach to diversity, equality, inclusion, and love. This book is easy to follow and written understandably with the story being told by grapes and raisins. Each grape has a different caste and social ranking, where raisins are barely acknowledged let alone trusted. Beautifully told, this book clearly shows the inequalities that are promoted by way of apathy and sometimes through deliberateness, and with extreme prejudice.

The Author, Lary Alan Threadgill, delivers a powerful message and delivers it well. He weaves the message carefully through a story that is entertaining and yet poignant at the same time.

The narrators, Felicia Johnson and Lary Alan give each grape and raisin a unique voice making the story and the message easy to follow.

There were some issues with the production and quality sound of this book. There was a lot of static, especially between chapters, and at times when Alan would talk it sounded as if he were in a tunnel. This is a powerful book that deserves much better sound quality. With that being said, it is still a book that should be heard.

THE RANSOM DROP

Narrated by: Ian Fisher

Production by: Rob Phayre

Of course, the pirates being novices does not make it any easier but rather more deadly in completing the ransom drop. The author, Rob Phayre has written a thrilling non-stop action filled story that will keep the listener captivated. Each character is well developed, the plot twists are excellent and at times leaves the listener wide-eyed. The dialog was authentic as well as the action and plot. This is one of those stories that will keep niggling at the back of your mind. Phayre has experience with ransom drops and real-life pirates which makes his ability to weave a story around the facts in an entertaining and vivid manner possible.

The narrator, Ian Fisher, gives a good solid performance with unique voices and accents that accurately reflect each character’s personality. He speaks clearly and with a steady cadence that helps move the story forward. Fisher injects the right amount of intenseness and suspense keeping the audience on the edge of their chairs.

This is a book that captivates and keeps the listener engaged from beginning to end. If you enjoy military thrillers, suspense, and intrigue, this is it! I am looking forward to the next in the series!

Drawn in, one cannot simply press stop and walk away from this audiobook. One is simply compelled to stay until the end.

The narrator, Ian Fisher once again captures and portrays each character exposing their depth and secrets. His polished voice is smooth and moves the story forward at a steady pace. He speaks clearly with a steady and flawless cadence.

In summary, this is a book that is a well-written and gripping story with moments of spine-tingling suspense. I highly recommend this series. This book was deemed to deserve higher than the standard five-star rating, therefore it was awarded the Audiobook Reviewer’s Choice Award.

Rob Phayre, the author, excels at creating realistic storylines inspired by current events. This story is enthralling and vividly depicts events in our contemporary world with remarkable realism. The emotional experiences of the characters are vividly portrayed, making them almost tangible. A look into the woman who was solely responsible for most of the devastation is insightful and powerful.

The narrator, Ian Fisher, once again delivers a wonderful performance. His character voices are consistently realistic, clear, and with the right amount of intensity to further enhance the story. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Fisher!

Goddess, Demons, and Corpse Selling!

Edgar Price is more than a dying man with plans to leave this world quietly, he has become the host for a revenant and encounters at least 6 demons, a goddess, and the notorious Burke and Hare fiends that created opportunities to make money selling corpses in 19th century Scotland.  Along with the guardian goddess of the Wood, Edgar sets out to rid the world of the demons and this is when the fun and horror begins.

Epic in length, The Resurrectionist by A.R. Meyering is an exceptional book.  Meyering takes several different genres and blends them together – gothic horror, mystery, and Fantasy with a touch of real crime – creating an engaging and intriguing story like Alice in Wonderland.  From the dialog to character development to world-building, Meyering is methodical and deliberate.  The story itself provokes thoughts of consequences, humanity, love, and life.

The story is poignantly peppered with characters and situations that the listener can watch evolve.  Meyering is a masterful wordsmith adept at weaving a story fully.

Alan R. Gron, the narrator, provides an excellent performance as he smoothly delivers the words that captivate the listener.  He slips between characters fluidly and without effort.  His voices are unique to the characters and represent each character appropriately.  His deliverance of the words was smooth and clear.

A very well-done book, Meyering delivers a magnificent story of chaos and intrigue combining them into a tale that will keep each listener enthralled to the end.

THE SAINT OF LAKE TOPAZ

The Starlight Club, Book 11

by Joe Corso
Narrator: Robert Ferraro

Intriguing and Exciting Story with the Vegas Mob!

After finishing a job, Bull decides to take a little detour and visit an old army friend – Sal Stark.  Bull is a man not to be messed with as he is the righthand man of Big Red Fortunato – a major player in the Las Vegas mob.  Jarret Hastings who is a human trafficker and more didn’t take into account Bull when he decided to hospitalize Stark and then send his men to threaten Mrs. Stark!   Bull, along with his boss, Pissclam (I love this name), Johnny Eight Fingers, and the rest of the crew, teach Hastings and his customers a lesson they are not likely to forget!

Oh, and add to this a little girl named Suzie who has asked specifically for a saint!  She gets her prayers answered when “Saint” Bull arrives on the scene and rescues her and the other little girls from being sold into harems. This was an intense story that was full of action and suspense as well as humor and there’s even some romance!

Joe Corso, the author, takes the bad guys and makes them good, then takes the really bad guys and makes them worse!  I thought the dialog moved the story along at a good pace and was genuine.  The characters were well-developed, and I could see Bull, Pissclam, Hastings, and the others vividly in my mind as they were so richly described.

The narrator, Robert Ferraro gives an excellent performance.  Each character had a unique voice that fits their personality as described by the author.  Ferraro has perfect rhythm and intuitive timing.  He used the appropriate inflection of his voice.

THE SEEKERS SERIES

The Children of Darkness
Book 1

by Author David Litwack
Narrated by: Erin deWard

Production by: Publisher Evolved Publishing LLC

Intriguing Fantasy with Mystery!

Imagine a return to the medieval times when small towns were run by “priests” that taught darkness was evil. The darkness they refer to is the time when the world collapsed into war and chaos. Now the people are much like medieval times where they barely have enough to eat, must walk everywhere, no comforts to speak of, and a fear of being selected for a “teaching.” The teachings are taught through fear and deprivation. Three childhood friends, Nathaniel, Thomas, and Orah survive the teaching. Nathaniel, while rescuing Orah connects with an old man in a prison cell. This man is step one in the “keeper chain” that has untold secrets and more. The three must find the keep but to find it, may mean their lives and the lives of their loved ones. Caught between right and wrong, justice and injustice, these three friends must make life-changing decisions.

David Litwack, the author, creates a story that is engaging, full of suspense and a little romance. Litwack develops each character slowly and completely, with deliberate ease that draws the listener in and keeps them there. The plot unfolds naturally and effortlessly. The listener cannot help but connect with the three young people because they are characters that everyone has in their lives – strong, smart, and wistful, and all with purpose and drive.

The narrator, Erin deWard, does an amazing job of giving a voice to each character that is reflective of their personality and core. deWard speaks clearly and with earnest; almost as if she were slipping into each character and becoming them. She spoke smoothly and with distinction. It was a very pleasant listening experience.

This is book one in a series of three. I cannot wait to start on the next one, this is a series that will only grow better and bolder as the challenges the three life-friends will face.

The Stuff of Stars
Book 2

by David Litwack
Narrated by: Erin deWard

Production by: Evolved Publishing LLC

Adventure, Trust, Wisdom and More!

Orah and Nathaniel continue their truth-seeking after discovering the Keep and revealing the truth about the darkness to the folks in their small piece of the world.  Now they are bound for the other side of the ocean to discover more and meet with the descendants of the Keep.  Much like the home they left, there is a divide between the Greenies and the Machinists.  Caught between two nearly warring factions, Orah and Nathaniel must bring them together and help bring forward movement there so they may increase awareness at home.  Will they be enough to bring peace so they may continue to spread knowledge, truth, and hope?

David Litwack, the author, has cleverly built a world where truth is twisted and hidden. Amongst the people of this world, trust is almost non-existent as well. Litwack consistently builds the premise that trust and truth are achievable but at a cost.  That cost, for some, is greater than for others.  Litwack puts on display all of our human fallacies dealing with truth, trust, and even hope.  He captures our fears and reactions vividly.

The narrator, Erin deWard gives a solid performance interjecting the right amount of emotion and inflection.  Her delivery and timing are smooth.  It is almost as if she has stepped into the story; the words flow seamlessly.

In the next book, I am eager to see how successful Orah and Nathaniel are and what trouble Thomas, their childhood friend who remained behind finds himself.

This is an interesting series and one that will leave you pondering.  Your mind will dwell on the meaning of truth, where it is, and the differences between people.  This is a great series – a definite listen!

The Light of Reason
Book 3

by David Litwack
Narrated by: Erin deWard

Production by: Evolved Publishing LLC

Exciting Conclusion!

Returning home, Orah and Daniel bring home new friends, new opportunities, and most importantly … knowledge and experience. Together, Orah and Daniel along with their new friends, try to give the people of Little Pond and beyond peace and access to more knowledge. First, they must rescue Thomas from the new Grand Vicar, and then they must defeat the Grand Vicar – the very one that used to take people for their teachings. Together with their friends, they hatch a plan. A plan that will hopefully scare the stripes off the Grand Vicar and his followers.

David Litwack, the author, has woven an intricate story with unique worlds and beliefs, action-packed, and a problem that makes the listener give pause. Who decides what side is right and which is wrong? Who decides what is right and that fixing it is ethically correct? For the first time, Orah and Daniel must deal with moral paradoxes in order to save their world and their friends.

Although each book has been filled with action and challenges for the protagonists, this book delivers an ending that is awesome. I highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys fantasy, action, and adventure. Litwack provides characters with depth and a storyline that provokes deep thought.

The narrator, Erin deWard once again gives a strong performance with unique voices that are consistent throughout the series. Her smooth delivery and vocals are both realistic and enthralling. She becomes Orah easily and keeps the performance moving flawlessly.

THE SENATOR’S DAUGHTER
Jesse Jaines Mystery

by Greg McManus
Narrated by: Adela Bolet

Production by: Greg

Action-Packed Thriller with Major Twists!

FBI agents Jaines and Gassert have been called into a search for a missing, albeit “secret”, daughter of the prominent and influential Senator Isigawa. Their search takes them from the city into the deep trenches of rural America, where they discover a connection to Jaine's past. Neither of them are prepared for what they learn!

The author, Greg McManus has created one of those books that keep you engaged and sitting on the edge of your seat as you wait for the next plot twist. This book deals with several topics and issues that will make parents cringe and others grind their teeth, especially when it becomes clear that no one can be trusted. I had to cheer when Karma interceded and took care of two culprits! McManus’s writing style is clear, focused, and quick-paced. I found his plot twists exceptional and well-executed. Each character was well developed and witnessed their growth clearly. This is not a book to listen to unless you have time, because you will NOT want to shut it off. Once I finished the book, I found that no matter how tired I was I could not go to sleep; the book continued to stay with me long after the ending. The story itself is very powerful and moving.

The narrator, Adela Bolet, gave a good performance. She moved the story forward through her pacing and proper intonations. Her unique voices provided the listener with a solid way of keeping the characters straight. I thought she captured the feel of the book accurately and projected it well. She has a soothing tone that made listening easy.

THE SHAKESPEARE CONSPIRACY

by Ted Bacino
Narrated by: Ian Fisher

Production by: Bacino & Associates

Review by W.D. Douglass

Romance!

The Shakespeare Conspiracy was written by Ted Bacino and narrated by Ian Fisher. This story's title and synopsis are severely misleading. Going into the listen I thought the book would focus around the conspiracy aspect. Unfortunately, this tale is more about what two people in love will do to stay together than it is about bringing to light the true author of so many notable plays. It boils down to a melding of conspiracy and historical facts that are merely what this romantic narrative has been forged around. I am not an avid romance listener. Therefore, I would not suggest this listen to anyone who likes to listen to conspiracy-based audiobooks.

Ian Fisher as the narrator does not bring much to this story either. He failed to bring any life or distinction to the cast of characters in this audiobook. Along with that, anytime he would yell, it would cause audio distortions. Seems like he should turn down his gain settings when recording more intense moments.

THE SKY ABOVE

by A.G.R. Goff
Narrated by: Andrew James Roberts

Thought-Provoking Adventure!

Two schoolboys, Mark who is Christian, and Ben who is Muslim, join forces in order to survive the aftereffects of the religious war of Christians vs Muslims.  Along with Ben’s sister (Pumpkin), the two must find water, food and avoid those whose racial hatred continues to fester.  At one point, the three find themselves in the presence of a community of women – Christian women who want Mark to provide for them and they do not care that he’s only in his early teens.

This is one of those rare books that is not only interesting and engaging but thought-provoking.  The author, A.G.R. Goff does an excellent job of building characters, world-building, and keeping the story moving along at a steady pace.  The dialog was realistic and flowed smoothly.  I had no problem with the time jumps.  Goff did an excellent job of developing Ben, Mark, and Pumpkin to the point that the listener could not help but come to care for them.

The narrator, Andrew James Roberts gave a solid performance.  I enjoyed his voice and his cadence was steady.  He gave each character a “voice” that allowed the listener to engage.  The continuity of his performance was important and well done.

This is an interesting book that stays with you long after you hear the closing words.  I look forward to hearing more from A.G.R. Goff and performances by Andrew James Roberts.

I thought the cover of the audiobook was vivid and communicated to the listener what type of action this would be.

THE SPY DEVIL

by Joe Goldberg
Narrated by: P.J. Ochlan

Production by: Joe Goldberg

Action-Packed, Covert Thriller!

The Spy Devils is an action-packed, adventure with espionage, and conspiracy theories. As a life-trained agent, Trowbridge “Bridger” Hall leads a highly trained group of highly successful covert agents. That is until his CIA handler and mother step in, then everything gets shaky. Now Bridger has to determine what his and his team's next steps will be and who he can trust in this fast-moving story.

The author, Joe Goldberg, delivers a rich detailed spy novel with an intricate web of deceit woven throughout the plot. In addition, he provides unique characters that add to an already rich story. I enjoyed this book, especially the unexpected plots twists!

The narrator, P.J. Ochlan, did a great job of giving each character a unique voice that made following the story easier. The voices accurately reflected the personality of each character – from soft-spoken to snark to deadly and more. Ochlan helped draw the listener in and keep them immersed in the story.

THE TROJAN PLAGUE

by Pierce Roberts
Narrated by: Dennis J. Baxter

Science vs Supernatural Thriller!

As a representative of AudioBookReviewer here is my review on The Trojan Plague written by Pierce Roberts. Hilter’s son tries to take over the world with a secret genetically engineered virus. The world's only hope is a group of scientists, who have already defeated an evil Nazi scientist before, who happen to all be close friends, and who happen to also all be super religious. Every conflict's keypoint of resolution is solved not by the skills of the scientists but by supernatural happenstance. The author leads the reader by the nose through the entire book. From the excessive amount of detailed information including meals that each of the characters ate to every character’s excessive religious beliefs.

The narrator of this scientific thriller was Dennis J. Baxter. Unfortunately, this narrator’s performance did not add anything to the story. His pacing throughout the book was off. Instead of a flowing river, this narration is a trip down some white water rapids.

The Victorian Vampire

by Nick James
Narrated by: Paul Hillian

Publisher: Nicholas James Plumridge

Review Written by W. D. Douglass

Light Vampire Fun with some Intrigue!

The Victorian Vampire written by Nick James is a tale about an everyday brit that turns into an everyday vampire. Overall this book was a feel-good fun read. From the heartwarming bonds formed by the characters to the funny situations, they get into. This book is a good fit for anyone who enjoys the vampire genre but wants it light on the gore. Unfortunately, the downfall of this story is that there wasn't any real conflict for the protagonist to overcome. Sure, there were sprinklings of minor conflicts throughout which were quickly resolved, and I didn't feel that he was ever in any real danger.

The narrator Paul Hilliar did an exceptional job, being a perfect match for the majority of characters. Although his American accent needs a little work, his voice acting was consistent throughout and caught the tone of the protagonist and other characters perfectly.

Editing, quality, and production were on par with most books I have listened to. It was clear, with no issue with sound or quality.

THREE GRAVES

by Zack Kaplan
Narrated by: Maxwell Hamilton

Production by: Zack Kaplan

Review by W.D. Douglass

Hilarious Fun!

Three Graves was written by Zack Kaplan and narrated by Maxwell Hamilton. This revenge rampage is a tale full of hilarious moments, heartbreak, and action. The author spends time fleshing every character. While in other cases this could be considered a boring downfall in a book. However, this author turned it into an entertaining boon. To say any more might ruin the fun. With this audiobook, you can turn your brain off and just enjoy the ride.

The narration by Maxwell Hamilton is fantastic. This is a book chalked full of unique characters and managed to give each character a unique feel. Making it easy to keep up with. He consistently conveyed their emotions.

TIMES OF CHANGE
Book 1

by B. L. Dawn
Narrated by: Troy Duran and Heather Firth

Production by: Obscure Lunar Publishing LLC

Unique and Creative Wolf-Shifter!

Tatum Roloff is not your typical female. She’s a strong woman and she’s also a wolf-shifter that bucks the male-driven wolf world. Responsible for her two brothers and great-grandfather after her family is brutally murdered, her life continues to become complicated and conflicted. The inner wolf wants one thing and the female within her wants something too! They need to find a Pack to meet the needs of her family. Accepted into The Green Lagoon Pack, life for Tatum just got more complicated.

B.L. Dawn, the author, creates a world of male vs female power, love, conflict, and more. Each character was developed, although some additional backstory would be nice to know about certain characters but not required. I did get a little confused with Tatum’s memory issues. Dawn doesn’t take the usual approach of the Packs being independent or with rich resources, rather the opposite which allows Tatum to take on an important role within this male-dominated world.

The two narrators were good, Troy Duran and heather Firth, alternating their narration according to the characters. I’d get used to one and then the other would take over which was a bit of a jolt at first, but I grew accustomed to it. Both narrators were pleasant to hear, and their deliveries were spot on. They spoke clearly and smoothly.

This is a good book! It has everything you could want – wolves, danger, romance, conflict, and more.

TO KILL A SAINT

by Michael Swiger
Narrated by: Todd A. Thompson

Intense Plot Twists and Action-Packed Thriller!

A woman is found murdered on an altar, a priest is accused of murder and has a questionable background, a best friend who is so much more, an angry son, and a new romance is brewing in this twist-filled story. Michael Swiger, the author, has created a story that will keep the listener squirming and intently listening.

Swiger creatively crafts visual images that are detailed and shocking at times, but which are perfect for the story. His character development is strong and complete. Each aspect of each character is honed and true to the story. His plotline is methodically planned out and formulated to glean the best reaction out of the listener. I could not stop listening and kept listening well into the night. To Kill a Saint is not only interesting but keeps the listener riveted to the story.

The narrator, Todd A. Thompson, gives a noteworthy performance. His narration is clear, concise, and has a rhythmical flow. I know that at times it had to be hard for him to keep his rhythm steady as the action was building and becoming more intense, but Thompson kept everything flowing smoothly and gave just enough inflection to keep the listener hooked. Each character had a distinct voice and sounded just like I would expect them.

A gripping book of murder and thrills. I look forward to hearing more tales by Michael Swiger and performances by Todd A. Thompson.

TOO BROWN TO KEEP
A Search for Love, Forgiveness, and Healing

by Judy Fambrough-Billingsley

Why? The Most Difficult Question to Answer Sometimes!

This is a well-crafted memoir of a woman who was abandoned by her parents during WW II in Germany.  Born biracial, her mother could not be bothered to endure any inconvenience in order to raise her and her sister. Her father, a member of the US military during WWII abandoned them as well.  However, it is her mother’s abandonment that haunts her the most. Judy sets off on a journey to find her biological parents and answers.  It is this search that places her on the path to healing and the ability to forgive.

This memoir will linger with the listener long after it is over.  What overcomes abandonment?  The author, Judy Fambrough-Billingsley, tells us it is love, forgiveness, and healing.  The pain Judy faced each day should be heard and appreciated.  Although she did not dwell upon it, Judy’s adoptive parents were mixed about her search.  Out of love and respect, Judy took care not to upset the woman who loved her as her own and raised her with the love and passion of a biological parent.  The result of her search is complete and as satisfying as one might expect or hope.

The narrator, Jennifer Groberg was sensitive to the topic and delivered the performance with the right amount of passion and tenderness.  Her cadence was smooth and well-timed.  The voice of Judy was exactly as I expected – tender and loving yet pained and longing.

Although I do not listen to many memoirs, this is one that hits close to home and one that I find powerful.

TRIAL BY FIRE
A Miranda and Parker Mystery
Book 6

by Linsey Lanier

A Mystery and a Cold Case that Gets Personal

Trial by Fire written by Linsey Lanier is an intriguing book.  Married less than a year, Parker and Miranda take on a cold case in Chicago.  Miranda is seeking justice for the young dead art student and Parker has a different agenda; one that could end badly for them both.  The house fire that killed the young students hits home for Miranda in ways that neither her nor Parker could imagine.  Faced with deception and a ticking clock, Miranda must find the killer and face the unimaginable secret Parker is withholding from her.  To complicate things further, Miranda has a history in Chicago that has not yet been resolved either!

This was a well-done mystery thriller that hooked the listener early on.  The plot twists were unpredictable and thrilling.  Although this was book 6 and I have not had the privilege of hearing the other books in the series, the author did an excellent job of character development of Parker and Miranda without it sounding repetitive.

The narrator, Kristin James was perfect!  I have had the privilege of hearing her performances before so when I saw she had narrated this one, I knew I was in for a treat.  She did not disappoint!  Her distinctive voices were clear and fit each character’s personality.  Her speech was clear and natural sounding.

TUYO

by Rachel Neumeier
Narrator: Patrick McCaffrey

Intriguing Fantasy of Epic Length!

Ryo inGara is from the winter country that happens to be at war against the summer country. Ryo, the son of an important war leader is offered up as a tuyo (a sacrifice) to the Lord of the summer country. However, the Lord and Ryo become friends after many tense-filled moments and lessons learned. Ryo discovers that Lord Aras is not the power-hungry, domineering, terror-inducing Lord he is purposed to be. Instead, the relaxed, fair-minded Aras shows Ryo that honest friendship, respect, and honor are important.

This is a character-driven story that is told from Ryo’s point of view. It is slow-moving, but this is deliberate. The listener cannot help but be drawn into the story of these two men coming together in friendship after clashing because of their culture, societal beliefs, and discovering for oneself the truth.

Rachel Neumeier, the author, balances the story with just enough detail to keep the listener intrigued but not overwhelmed or lost in unnecessary detail. This is not a story about a place but rather the story of these two men and their acceptance of truth, honor, and what is right.

The narrator, Patrick McAffrey, gives a solid performance giving each character a different enough voice so that the listener is not lost or confused. I found he injected just enough emotion and expression into the voices that allow the character to become believable and realistic. I enjoyed hearing McAffrey perform and I think he gave sustenance to the characters created by Neumeier.

TWO IN THE BUSH
The Branwell Chronicles

by Judith Everett
Narrated by: Clare Wille

Production by: Judith Hale Everett

Delightful Fresh Historical Romance!

Two In a Bush is a delightful Regency-era romance novel that focuses on the young Lenora who is about to make her debut this season. Her mother, Genevieve Breckinridge, calls on a dear friend from her past to help debut her daughter. While she is not seeking to marry her off just yet, she does want to remove the silly romantic ideas Lenora focuses on and gives her some experience in the real world. Throw in dashing Sir Joshua into the mix turning heads with his dashing good looks yet arrogant attitude and the fun ensues. Genevieve not only has her daughter to worry about but must make some tough decisions and possibly even more sacrifices of her own.

The author, Judith Everett, weaves a captivating story highlighting the regency era and its views on romance. She develops each character carefully and with significant details focusing on their personalities and the era. I have to say, I really did not like Sir Joshua at first but then began to enjoy his character. I used to read Barbara Cartland and dreaded finding a replacement author to feel those times when I wanted pure romance and during a romantic era. I think I found that replacement with Ms. Everett!

The narrator, Clare Wille gives a sweet performance that enhances the story. Her voice is smooth and clear. Wille’s cadence is steady and polished while continuing to move the story forward.

This is a fresh, wholesome historical romance book that is easy to listen to and allows the listener to become engrossed in the story.

VISITING DARKNESS

by Celeste Prater
Narrated by: Jeffrey S. Fellin

Production by: Celeste Prater

A Mystery with a Splash of Supernatural!

An excellent mystery story with a splash of the supernatural. The author, Celeste Prater, had me hooked from the start. With fresh storytelling mechanics, like not introducing our main character until the third chapter, to not being afraid to let the story go where it needs to. From one clue to the next, this tale has genuine surprises around every corner.  The author's ability to develop a story while also developing the character's relationships was well balanced and provided a feel of the real world. This is a must-read for anyone who enjoys a good mystery.

Jeffery S Fellin did a spectacular job narrating this audiobook. He brought this well-written book to life. Constant character voices, conveying emotions, you name it he nailed it.

Editing, quality, and production were on par with most books I have listened to.  It was clear, with no issue with sound or quality.

The Audiobookreviewer’s Choice Award, is a prestigious award presented to the author of the book whose story is believed to deserve higher than the standard 5 Star Rating.

WALL STREET WEST: THE GATHERING
THE AGE OF DARKNESS
Age of Awakening Trilogy, Book 2

by Khafra Om-Ra-Seti
Narrated by: Paul Richard Yarborough

Production by: Khafra K. Omrazeti

The Gathering vs Evil!

Wall Street West is a complex story involving secret societies seeking to destroy the current class and economic structure and put into place a feudal-style structure.  However, they did not plan on the presence or abilities of Father Destiny and his friends. While working against the evil that is attempting to break Wall Street, destroy the economy, and the restructuring attempts, the ancients are not above making money. The story becomes so much more!

The author, Khafra Om-Ra-Seti creates a complex and complicated story around economic, political, and societal failures. Each character is well developed and the story flows smoothly. The plot twists are well-done. Om-Ra-Seti does a good job of taking a complex story and offering details in a rich and understandable style. I am not savvy when it comes to economics or Wall Street and I have not heard book 1, yet I was able to follow the story well.

The narrator, Paul Richard Yarborough is a seasoned performer who gave a balanced performance providing distinct voices for each character. I thought his performance moved the story along at a good clip.

WELCOME TO THE MADHOUSE
A Medical Space Station Thriller
Book One of the Grace Lord Series

by S.E. Sasaki
Narrated by: Marc Leclerc

Production by: S.E. Sasaki and Benjamin David Rawls

A True Madhouse, Welcome!

Welcome to the Madhouse: Book One of the Grace Lord Series was written by S.E. Sasaki and Narrated by Marc Leclerc. This story lives up to its title, it's a true madhouse of a tale. Jump starting with immediate action, then moving to a weird love triangle, onto the ethics of being a surgeon who is healing soldiers that will just go back to fighting in an unexplained war. After that, it takes a hard right to a viral outbreak with an extremely high mortality rate, then doubles back to this weird love triangle topped with a murder mystery. And on and on with the weird turns.

While this story kept me entertained it felt like it was being told in a vacuum. I wish there was more explanation of the world this story took place in. This could have provided more depth and understanding to the main characters. The characters were entertaining and sometimes hilarious; though they still lacked depth in the way the characters acted differently than their previously described characteristics and mindsets.

Marc Leclerc's narration of this story started off rough but ended well. He started off at a very fast pace of speech but later got into a solid reading cadence. The differences in voice for different characters were distinguishable and consistent.

WHAT ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE?

by Nick James

Tongue in Cheek Zombie Fun!

What Zombie Apocalypse is a fun listen that will have you laughing, cringing in pain at times but most importantly one will “see” the apocalypse from Tony’s point of view easily.  The author, Nick James does a delightful job of providing vivid imagery of Tony and his growth from an over-weight gamer to a lean mean zombie killing machine!

I loved the rich dialog Tony had with himself as he struggled to survive the apocalypse and find his love.  After all, he was a different man from before the apocalypse!  I thought the situations Tony finds himself in were distinct and reminded me of those other “tongue in cheek” fun horror books of zombies roaming freely with an unlikely hero.  However, I can say without any hesitation that this was by far the best, fun zombie book I have heard.

While I thought the book was well written, the narrator, James Meunier gave an excellent performance.  He not only gave voice to Tony, but he also became Tony – it was like he was Tony deep down.  I loved the different voices he gave each character, but I have to say Tony was PERFECT!  His performance was smooth and flowed naturally.

This book has been awarded the AudioBookReviewer Choice Award.  This prestigious award is presented to the author of a book believed to deserve higher than the standard 5 Star Rating.

As always, the author, Aila Skye is vivid in her imagery and detailed allowing the listener to slip into the story easily and remain.  Although this book is very short, Skye captivates the listener.  The descriptions of Edinburgh and Scotland are rich and sharp.

The narrator, Alexa Teebo is perfect for the story.  I loved her Scottish voice and the way she could switch from Scottish to American easily.  She projected the right amount of emotion and kept the story moving with the lilt of her voice.

I am intrigued as to where this story will lead, the hijinks of Heather, and how the romance between Susan and Daniel goes.

Working at a tourism magazine as the manager in the printing department, Susan is ready for the next chapter of her life … until she receives a much-wanted but dreaded phone call from her ex, Danny.

Single Malt Man

by Aila Skye
Narrated by: Alexa Teebo

Publisher: Philip Angus

Meddlesome Friends and True Love!

The romance between Danny and Susan is not going well. Danny returns to Scotland filled with the pain of his friend’s death earlier and the loss of Susan. Heather and his best friend begin to set Danny up on blind dates making Danny realize just how much he misses Susan and that there will be none like her. He has some hard decisions to make but first, he must quit wallowing in his pain and loss. The deadly storm that is headed straight toward Susan motivates Danny to act quickly. Will he get to her in time?

The author, Aila Skye, continues to build the story of Danny and Susan beautifully. Vivid in details and emotions, the listener feels the pain and desires as well. Each character is developed solidly and richly. The plot moves smoothly along with the genuine dialog.

The narrator, Alexa Teebo, gives a quality performance and continuity with the voices of the characters. This is key to keeping the characters straight and Alexa does this beautifully. Each voice is rich and unique.

This series of books are short listens but transport the listener deep into the story. I look forward to hearing how Danny and Susan resolve their relationship.

Whisky & Water

Family and Love!

We can only pick our friends and not our family as Susan and Danny are figuring out! Reunited after the devastating storm that destroys everything, they return to Scotland together. Once there they face a formidable challenge that could break them yet once again. Time will tell.

Aila Skye, the author, drives home that one has zero choices in family members, but one chooses the best of friends and that love can conquer all if given an opportunity. This book in the Whisky series furthers the adventures and love of Susan and Danny by providing authentic dialog that keeps the story moving forward at a steady pace. I thought the interaction (aka fight) between Danny and his sister would have been more vicious, Skye surprised me!

As to her character development, I have come to care about the characters as Skye has developed them fully with some being edgy and having moments of irony and sass. I have enjoyed how Skye has broken up each chapter by allowing Susan and Danny to provide their insight into the developing situations.

The narrator, Alexa Teebo, continues to provide distinct and strong voices for each character. It is clear which character is speaking not only by the words but by the tone Teebo utilizes for each. Her voice is clear and crisp. I enjoyed her voice so much that she could read the dictionary and I would enjoy it!

Overall, this has been a wonderful series filled with twists and turns that are realistic when one is involved in a relationship. I highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys romance.

WHITEWATER
Rachel Hatch, Book 6

by L.T. Ryan, Brian Shea
Narrated by: Marnye Young

Production by: Liquid Mind Media

A Thrill a Minute!

Rachel Hatch is a former military police and criminal investigator who finds herself neck-deep in a human-trafficking ring being run by the Mexican cartel.  Hatch does “the complicated” well.  She must cross the border unseen, find the missing girl in a country that has no rules, and get them both out of Mexico alive and safe.  In addition, the power of the cartel is unstable because of a struggle within and outside the leadership.  This is a nail-biter!  Lots of intense moments focusing on corruption and violence.

The authors, L. T. Ryan and Brian Shea, weave an intense, nail-biting thriller.  Just when you think you know what is going to happen, things shift usually leaving a bloody swatch.  Ryan and Shea are skillful at putting together a strong storyline, colorful characters, and creating situations that allow for intricate yet clearly executed plot twists.  The dialog was well done and moved the story forward.

The narrator, Marnye Young gives a wonderful performance interjecting the appropriate amount of emotion, physical duress, and excitement to this thriller.  She speaks clearly and keeps the story moving forward.  The specific voices she gave each character reflected their personalities well and helped the listener connect with the story deeper.

Although I have not read the previous books, this one has enough background to not only entice me to read the other five books but gave me a clear picture of Hatch and her life.  Once I started the book, I wanted to listen from beginning to end without stopping.

Who’s There?
A Collection of Stories

by Dimas Rio

Sometimes it’s better not knowing!

A small collection of stories that focus on innocent turned terrifying situations centering on greed and revenge.  My favorite was the one focusing on limbs that move on their own – it was almost poetic in its telling.  Taking innocent situations and putting a terrifying twist on them is the theme of this book, short and sweet filled with intense moments.  These are short stories of greed, retribution, and torment.  These are stories that take root in the minds of each character – where else can a demon truly live, thrive, and torture?

While short, these stories are entertaining and familiar but with new creatures or a twist.  Well written each tale is captivating and grounded in folktales.  The author, Dimas Rio is skilled as a storyteller.

The narrator, Bill Allender, gives a solid performance with a cadence that sounds almost poetic in its rhythmic deliverance.  His narration is clear and concise, the words rolling off his tongue.

This collection of tales is interesting and uniquely different from most collections.  It is a nice break from reality and allows the listener to step away from life and enjoy some horror.

Jacobs writes about the complexities of life and what one must endure because of their station in life or gender or …. Her listeners are taken on a ride of emotions and given vividly rich details that keep the listener engaged. The characters are three-dimensional and with great depth.

The narrator, Katie Hagaman provides distinct and unique voices for each character and keeps the story moving through her rich tone and inflection. Her performance was flawless and smooth.

WITH LITTLE MEANS

by Author: Raimo Strangis
Narrated by: Brad Gerke

Second Chance at Dreams!

Rai Starr has a vision – becoming a rock star!  He failed his first try but now he has an opportunity to achieve his most treasured and desired dream – he can relive his life and become the rock star he has always longed to be.  But the cost is extremely high and requires just as high sacrifices. As if the consequences are not high enough - his actions are visible to anyone who wants to view him.

Similar to the Matrix and Truman Show, but with several twists, the author, Raimo Strangis, provides a provocative look at just how life can get in the way and the lengths one might take to achieve their deepest desires.  He puts on display the basic human desires and the consequences of choices.

Few characters but Strangis develops each one in detail giving his listeners an inside view into their minds and actions.  The plot twist is well-laid out and the dialog realistic.

The narrator, Brad Gerke, gives a solid performance.  His cadence is smooth, and he injects the right amount of emotion and feeling when appropriate.  I enjoyed his narration.

This is an interesting book and engages the listener into considering what lengths they may go to in order to achieve their dreams.

WYRD GODS: TIMELESSNESS
Book 1

by Susana Imaginario
Narrated by: Sarah Kempton

Production by: Susana Imaginario

Answered Prayers with a Twist!

This is a story about a goddess who has isolated herself by withdrawing from the world, staying away from the other gods content to dwell among the stars. Then one day, she does the unthinkable and answers a prayer only to discover there is a reason why no gods ever answer the prayers of humans! Caught in the body of Illena she discovers that the world is full of danger and intrigue as both the Norse gods and Greek gods are fighting. There is mystery, romance, and more in this well-thought-out story woven with mythological beings and creatures.

The author, Susana Imaginario builds each character skillfully allowing them to evolve into rich and complete beings. The story is well-told and invokes the desire to read more on the mythological beings mentioned – such as Chronos, Odin, and more. She manages to keep the suspense and deliver solid twists to the plot.

The narrator, Sarah Kempton, gives a solid performance. Her range of voices is rich and gives each character a personality that fits their role and the plot. Her cadence was smooth.

This is an interesting story that offers an opportunity to question motives, human nature, and more. I look forward to hearing the story evolve throughout the series.

Y2K: PANIC LIKE IT’S 1999
What If Multiverse, Book 1

by Jason Lake
Narrated by: Robert Nieman

Production by: children’s Telepathic Workshop

Review by W. D. Douglass

A “What If” Hit!

Y2K: Panic like it's 1999, was written by Jason Lake and narrated by Robert Nieman. This post-apocalyptic “what if” tale was a fun read. The author was able to set the groundwork for an entertaining adventure series. He was able to accomplish this by writing believable characters and through solid yet subtle storytelling build a world around these characters. The only downside to this listen is its length. As soon as the story had built up to full steam, the book was over.

The narrator Robert Nieman did a great job and was a perfect match for this tale. His voice acting was consistent throughout and caught the tone of the protagonist perfectly.

Editing, quality, and production were on par with most books I have listened to. It was clear, with no issue regarding sound or quality.
