Creative Urban Story of Typhoid Mary!

This is a historical and urban look at the woman identified as Typhoid Mary. This is the story of her life as a super spreader in New York City during the turn of the century. We see the life of Mary Mallon (aka Typhoid Mary) and all her struggles to be a worthy and working member of society. While it is historical, it also addresses the urban legend beliefs and the creative dialogs that might have occurred.

The author, Anthony Bourdain provides valuable insight into the life and times of Mary Mallon (Typhoid Mary) and the societal practices of the time.  It is not a pleasant picture! Seeing the underbelly of the beast is not always pleasant, but this goes a bit deeper with the reasons why and Mary’s thinking at the time. This is well researched with a creative narrative that guarantees empathy for Mary.

The narrator, Noonie Greene gives a good performance.  She speaks clearly, the words flow smoothly. I think I would like to hear a performance by Ms. Greene that allows her to fully expand on her skills.  This was not a book that allows the listener to fully appreciate her narration skills.

Overall, the book is a pleasant enough listen.  I would, however, recommend this to those who enjoy historical novels.  If you are expecting something with lots of action, you will need to look elsewhere.  This book almost seems like a homage to Mary and her trials and tribulations.

There was some background noise in this audiobook. It did disappear and became clearer to hear.
