Intriguing Fantasy of Epic Length!

Ryo inGara is from the winter country that happens to be at war against the summer country. Ryo, the son of an important war leader is offered up as a tuyo (a sacrifice) to the Lord of the summer country. However, the Lord and Ryo become friends after many tense-filled moments and lessons learned. Ryo discovers that Lord Aras is not the power-hungry, domineering, terror-inducing Lord he is purposed to be. Instead, the relaxed, fair-minded Aras shows Ryo that honest friendship, respect, and honor are important.

This is a character-driven story that is told from Ryo’s point of view. It is slow-moving, but this is deliberate. The listener cannot help but be drawn into the story of these two men coming together in friendship after clashing because of their culture, societal beliefs, and discovering for oneself the truth.

Rachel Neumeier, the author, balances the story with just enough detail to keep the listener intrigued but not overwhelmed or lost in unnecessary detail. This is not a story about a place but rather the story of these two men and their acceptance of truth, honor, and what is right.

The narrator, Patrick McAffrey, gives a solid performance giving each character a different enough voice so that the listener is not lost or confused. I found he injected just enough emotion and expression into the voices that allow the character to become believable and realistic. I enjoyed hearing McAffrey perform and I think he gave sustenance to the characters created by Neumeier.

The production quality of this audiobook was well done, clear, and without issue.
