Captivating Historical Novel!

In a small-town setting, young Harry Spencer grapples with family separation, his father's WWI disability, the rise of the Klu Klux Klan, and the onset of prohibition, all against a backdrop of self-discovery and healing.

The author, Karen Wolff, accurately reflects the complex mix of emotions arising from the trauma caused by war, the uncertainties of post-war life, and the emotional responses these created. She vividly portrayed the emotional connection and well-being of each character both subtly and dramatically as appropriate for the storyline. Each character, main or otherwise, was properly developed. I enjoyed her writing style as well. She wrote concisely and blended historical facts into the storyline perfectly. The plot twists reflect the common misunderstandings one can have with family when one is hurt or jumping to conclusions.

The narrator, Kevin Perkins, took this already captivating audiobook up a few more notches. The emotion and passion Kevin projected through each character were rich and vibrant. Each character had a unique voice which helped the listener to follow each character. His ability to switch from character to character is smooth and flawlessly executed. Hearing the subtle manner in which Harry grew up was well done. Kevin Perkins speaks clearly and with confidence thus elevating the pleasure and immersion of hearing this book.

Having come from a family that experienced the 1920s and upward, it was refreshing to hear similar experiences and the accuracy of both beliefs and facts of this time period. I cannot recommend this book enough – it was a pleasure to hear and remember.
