Odriel’s Heirs

by Hayley Reese Chow

An Epic Fantasy with Armies of Undead and Dragon Rage!

At 17 Kaia was a young woman who inherited a power that was both very powerful and very deadly.  The power she had to learn to harness and use to protect her family and homeland was the power of flame.  This power burned bright as the Dragon’s Rage.  Seeking her father, Kaia finds herself along with a childhood frenemy – Shadow Heir – the only two powerful and cunning enough to defeat the necromancer and his army.  Was she strong enough physically and emotionally to handle the responsibility of fighting the undead army and rescue her homeland after being exiled?

Hayley Reese Chow, author, demonstrated Kaia’s growth throughout the story as well as the other characters splendidly.  I enjoyed the talking animals and the budding romance.   Rich in details and description Chow gives the listeners a treat.  There was a balance of awe and twists that left the listener wondering what was next.

The dialog and character development kept the story moving.  The storyline was well developed and moved at a solid pace.  The romance was timid and slow which was perfect for this story – the listener never lost sight of the romance or the impending fight.  The side characters were well done also – just enough about them to keep the story moving.  The snarky cat was a nice touch.

The narrator, Claire Nicholls performed this audiobook very well.  I thought her narration was flawless and her tone set the appropriate mood for the book.  The voice of Kaia was perfect for a 17-year-old woman who had doubts and fears.  I found her voice soothing and exhilarating in the right places.

This is definitely a strong, unique and epic fantasy in which one can easily lose one’s self in the story.  Between the plot and the narrator, this book was highly enjoyable. I look forward to reading more by Chow and hearing more books narrative by Ms. Nicholls.
