The Devil is in the Details!

Perhaps in a deal with the devil, Chef Joseph Soderini di Avenzano is a distinguished chef known for his prowess in the kitchen with food and his ex-wives. Although little is truly known about Avenzano, journalist David Fox seeks out the renowned Chef to interview him and winds up being hired to write his biography. This book has one deadly recipe:  toss in a beautiful woman with a hidden agenda, cocaine, murder, lots of ex-wives, mafia, FBI and mix well. With this recipe, Fox must determine what is real and what is not before he finds himself on the wrong side of the grass!

This was an interesting story that also touches on the devil, soured relationships, money, and fame. The author, Mark Spivak does an excellent job at weaving a story and blending in several subplots in a manner that is easy to follow. There was a lot of speculation between Fox and the female lead about the Chef’s intent. The speculation seemed intense and dominated the book.

The narrator, Geoff Sturtevant gave a good performance that kept the book moving forward. His multiple voices fit each character well. Sturtevant is skilled with enunciation and an easy-to-follow cadence.

The storyline makes for an interesting thriller. I would like to hear more from Mark Spivak.
